Bridesmaids - (4/10)
Shame on you, Apatow. You let this get made with your name on it. To me this just shows that you are going down the same path as Adam Sandler. You even let an SNL buddy write the movie they star in.

Call me sexist, but you cannot have a woman write a raunchy comedy for women. What happens is you wind up with unexplained side characters that add absolutely nothing to the film. Seriously, she has a friends with benefits guy on the side in order to find a way to fit in the sex jokes, which is painfully obvious when he has zero effect on the rest of the film. I even had to ask my wife who the guy was.

Anyway, I don't get why this was so well liked when it came out. Its just a chick flick, complete with predictable story, relationship issues, and BFF problems, with tangential fart and sex jokes thrown in so it is edgey. Oh, and guess who gets all the fart and "I don't want to see that" sex jokes? The fat chick. All this was missing was the token black guy, probably because it was all women and they figured Maya Rudolph was all the ethnicity necessary. I mean, it was a cast of minorities anyway, right?

To sum up. Don't do it. I don't care how funny your mom claims it is, it isn't. It is edgy by her standards, but you're going to want to kill yourself.

Ok I just watched 127 hours. It's the one where the guy is rock climbing and gets trapped. Pretty much it's 95% just one dude trapped and nothing else. However the movie wasn't boring at all. I rate movies pretty hard and the last movie where someone was trapped in a box underground sucked so much ass so I didn't have high hopes for this one and was hesitant to even watch it. It was always entertaining the whole way threw with a trick here and there to make it even more exciting. If you haven't seen it because you thought it will be boring it's not so I say watch it.

It was surprisingly intriguing. Still a poor attempt at a superhero movie though. Focused too much on things that didn't really matter to the plot, in result there are many questions left open, so many I'm wondering they are/were planning a sequel. It's disappointing really because I could see a lot of potential in this movie. If only they went head on with the sci-fi/superhero stuff instead of aiming at a teen audience. It could be a great movie. Still recommend to those who like the superhero genre and have the patience to endure the teen mumble jumble.

Gonna have to disagree with you a bit here.

Bridesmaids 👍👎

Definitely some hits and misses in this romantic comedy. The movie is essentially carried by Kristen Wiig and her love interest. The rest of the cast is basically replaceable. The movie has moments of funny, moments of bad writing, and generally doesn't hit the right tone throughout. But I can still recommend it based on the high points.

I can definitely forgive a movie for a few unfunny jokes. But it's harder to look over a botched tone - which plagues this movie. It's constantly trying to figure out how seriously to take itself, with some scenes that come off as being very serious, and others that are essentially slapstick - even to the point of making fun of the fact that it's a movie. The movie didn't know whether it wanted to be Austin Powers or The Wedding Singer, and tried to be both.

Another thing that bugged me about this movie is the constant one-upmanship that seems to be going in Hollywood when it comes to the "low point" in the script. Having learned a little about about writing screenplays, I can tell you that there is a definite formula to it (to the point where prospective production companies only read about 3 pages of it, knowing exactly which page number to turn to to find out where the major points of the screenplay are). Page 70 is the "low point" of the movie. The part where they hit rock bottom before starting to fix things to quickly reach a happy ending and wrap everything up.

Normally the low point is where the character is struggling the most and all hope seems lost. If you're in a Bruce Willis movie, this is the part where he gets captured or tortured or something. In a romantic comdey, this represents a big fight with the love interest and possibly something else that goes wrong. Recently Hollywood has been taking the "low point" to lower and lower depths. It's like they looked at the previous movie and said "sure he lost his job and his girlfriend and his best friend at the low point, but his car was still working! We can go lower". Read the spoiler for more (it's not much a spoiler so don't sweat it).

Is it really necessary for the main character to lose her business, her job, her car, her dignity, her love interest, her other guy she didn't really like anyway, her friends, her apartment, and be generally humiliated having a nervous breakdown in front of everyone she knows?

It's like screenwriters see this as some sort of limbo competition, wanting to bring the character to the brink of suicide before fixing thing. It's irritating, unrealistic, unnecessary, and generally takes me out of the film.

Ok, so all that complaining aside there are some really funny moments in the film, things I was still laughing about days later. Despite the predictability, tone issues, and the occasional bad writing, I think it's worth a cautious recommendation. You can do a lot worse from a romantic comedy.

Fast Five (a.k.a. The Fast & The Furious 5, a.k.a. 5ast, 5urious, a.k.a. Whatever other combination I can make of the title to make it feel more appealing and groundbreaking, when in reality it's just another needless sequel) (Justin Lin, 2011) -- Not going to go into too much deatil about a movie that is just pop-corn Hollywood. Too much bad acting, too many cliches and 'improbable' action scenes. Decent plot that at least kept me halfway interested albeit the excessive use of CGI. I've heard a lot of people saying it's the best or 2nd best of the series, and I'd have to agree, but only because the first one was crap and all the others have been worse... this one is a level above crap, but still smells like a turd. One funny detail of the movie is that while the first and the 3rd (Tokyo Drift, was it?) are moreso about imports, this one sounds more like the American auto industry having a go at the movie and portraying every amazing car as a Chrysler product. A very meh-ish movie. 3.5/10

Unlike the previous two films, Fast5 used much less CGI to produce the action sequences. Most of the action was real and CGI was only used in post production to enhance the environment for the big screen.

The director goes to great lengths to keep things real...and you just assume its fake. No wonder most movies are CGI these days. If you can't tell the difference between real action and a glorified video game, why should they bother?

Right... I should've rephrased that to "an intense use fo not only CGI, but also miniatures, blue/green screen staging, aerial effects, (women who looked like) animatronics, digital composing, optical effects, excessive wiring, obvious rotoscoping, morphing and even a bit of tilt shifting".

Seriously, the use of CGI may or may not've been used in excess and the director can say all he wants about how little they actually used it, trying to keep it real. But the fact is that they used every other special effect in the book to be able to say they didn't use as much CGI as they did.

Also saw:

The Man Who Would be King (John Huston, 1975) -- An adaptation of a famous Rudyard Kipling short stry, about two englishmen, ex-soldiers in India, who decide to head off to Kafiristan and become kings in their own right. This is one of those rare movies where the actual movie improves upon the book, though I'm not going to bash the original story. Suffice to say it's a very fun and adventure-like movie about two men testing how far a lie can go through and live off it. Very enjoyable and funny, though at times they apparently tried to make it deep, but it didn't seem like the type at all. Exactly the type of movie they don't make anymore, with two great performances, and where the heroes are compeltely anti-heroes, but have many redeeming features, though they never betray their status. 8/10

Captain America: The First Avenger (Joe Johnston, 2011) -- perhaps I'm missing something, though I'll admit I'm not a very big fan of the comic, yet I've read enough of it to know a bit about the story and frown upon some details. I was pleasantly surprised to see Joe Johnston directed this flick, since about a year ago I saw a movie by him I liked a lot: The Rocketeer. The movie started out amazingly, making me think I was in for a great action flick, which turned out to be, well... boring. I really liked the whole transformation part and the relationship between Steve and Bucky, but it seemed that the movie's main plot-turning points were thought out, yet the rest of it was just filler. I actually stopped the movie a few times, claiming bathroom and munchies breaks, but the movie seemed like the type that just wants to end, but keeps on going, and this was halfway through it. Action sequences were very average and I never really was worried when the characters were in danger. Maybe it was the director, maybe it was the main actor, maybe just everything together, but the movie just failed to be anything at the level of the great Marvel ones, and just sits there with Daredevil and the first Hulk. 5/10

Watched Cars 2 yesterday. I think I liked this one better than the first one, though I didn't care much about either. And the plot twist actually surprised me, not sure if I was just not paying much attention to the movie but I didn't see it coming.

The Thing:

Didn't quite have the same atmosphere as the original '86 movie, but obviously the special effects were much better and made for a much more scarier movie. Acting was adequate, without there being any megastar in it, aka Kurt Russell. If you're looking for a half decent horror movie, then this is your ticket

8/10 stars

Watch this last night. Needless to say it's a real eye opener when you hear and see the trouble that we're getting ourselves into with over population. The visuals are great too, as everything is shot from an aerial perspective. Not really a movie, but it's a great documentary none the less.

I saw some news of this remake of "The Thing", which in Portuguese translates to "A Coisa", and I thought it was a movie about a white creamy thing that kills people I remember watching as a kid. Turns out the movie I was thinking about is actually "The Stuff". "The Thing" is called "Outworld Enigma" over here. I don't think I ever watched that one.

I think you're thinking of The Blob

The Thing was called The Enigma from Another Planet here (El Enigma de Otro Planeta) I doubt we got the original one.

Watched Cube last night. Haven't seen it since I was a little kid. :nervous:

It's an interesting concept, ruined by bad actors and a bad script. 👎

The best scene is probably when they're trying to get through the chamber with the sound-activated trap.

Edit: Watched two movies last night, American Beauty and Silent Running.

American Beauty was excellent.

Silent Running was... a mixed bag. It's got good, albeit dated, special effects. The acting was solid, and the premise was commendable. But the music was a bit hokey, and the script left something to be desired.

Ides of March

Ides of March follows the primary campaign of fictional Pennsylvania governor Mike Morris (George Clooney), from the perspective of Stephen Myers (Ryan Gosling), one of the higher-ranked of his campaign team. It had a great plot, a great script and I felt that the score/OST adequately reflected the tension of the scenes. I think that it's an accurate portrayal of how dirty politics can be. I think that the various actors were very good in their roles. I think that Giamatti and [Philip Seymour] Hoffman are very good in their roles as being experienced and cynical, in contrast to Gosling's youthful idealism. The addition of the intern (Evan Rachel Wood) as a romantic interest is good at furthering the plot, and she

furthers the plot even more through tragic circumstances.
Clooney, I feel, gives off a very Obama-esque vibe. He evokes a lot of idealism in his supporters, and seems to be idealistic himself when he
originally refuses to accept Senator Thompson as his potential Secretary of State.
All in all, this movie has what I call the "Holy Trinity" of movies: a good plot, a good cast and a good script. I give this movie a well-deserved 10/10, and I recommend it to anybody who doesn't bear a grudge against George Clooney.

So you recommended watching it? I didn't read the spoilers in case you happened to mention that there

I have been watching some Terrible Movies Lately .I just watched Torque again Yesterday (By far the worst ever movie). And Today I saw In Time which I was very happy to see end I don't like Timberlake and I hated the Movie 👎

I watched Eddie Murphy RAW. It is one of his stand up routines and I expected big things since his stand up is always so funny. I watched Delirious before and it was so funny definitely must watch if you like to laugh. This was was the next one after that and it did have a lot of funny things, but I felt a lot of it wasn't really jokes it was just him talking about things and kinda went on a little long about them.

Watched three movies last night. Lady Vengeance, Liar Liar and Total Recall.

I've been meaning to watch Lady Vengeance for a while now, since I loved Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance and Old Boy, but I never really felt like it until last night. And like the other two, it was great. :D 👍

Liar Liar I've seen before, but it's been a while. Jim Carrey's, ahem, "acting" is in full form here. But it works surprisingly well here, and Liar Liar ends up actually being pretty funny and entertaining.

Total Recall I've never seen in it's entirety, but I saw bits of it as a child. Typical of a Schwarzenegger flick, it's an ultraviolent bloodbath. Not typical for this type of movie, however, is that it's actually got a somewhat engaging plot. As well as a very cool, well-realized sci-fi setting. Not a masterpiece, but a fun movie when you're in the mood for violence and sci-fi. :)

Lol ya it was probably the second best one. Tokyo drift was alright, but was so far off from any story line to me it isn't even part of the series. The first one by far was the best it had everything. Not only was it about cheap cars pimped out but also had that underground element where they were stealing parts and it was all hush hush which actually played a big part in the movie. The reason everyone likes these movies is because the cheap cars like civic and integras that anyone can get and build to look like there cars. All the characters where regular people too which was even more for the audience to relate too. Every movie since tried to Hollywood it up and this last one was no exception with its impossible scenes and 0 relate ability to the audience. Who can afford an old muscle car now with gas prices so high and the cars costing so much. I wish they would just go back to regular kids racing cars in the street.

Now for my review. I watched Snatch staring Brad Pit and I have heard of it before but never seen it. Anything with bra Pitt I assume will be good or at least decent because why hire someone and pay his huge price if your movie is going to be crap. Luckily I was right and the movie was pretty sweet. It was funny for what was going on and brad pitt plays an irish gypsy who barely speaks understandable English which was truly hilarious to listen to and must have been really hard to practice for. It's all about the British crime scene underground world and is focused more on debts being payed off. A bunch of small stories are going on which all relate and than really start to interconnect with each other at the end. Highly recommended.

Senna (2010) A documentary on Brazilian Formula One racing driver Ayrton Senna, who won the F1 world championship three times before his death at age 34.

To be honest, I wasn't very familiar with Ayrton Senna before I watched this documentary, except I knew he was this legendary F1 driver who died in a crash back in the 90's. I'm not a very big fan of F1 either. I tell you what though. This is my new hero.

One of the absolute best documentaries I have ever seen, and I've seen some good ones. A must see for anyone who are the least bit into motorsport. 9/10

+1 👍

Also, if you enjoyed "Snatch" you should also check out "Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels."

Mind Game (Masaaki Yuasa, 2004) -- A Japanese movie with a name in English, it follows Nishi, a loser who has always had a crush on his childhood friend. After an encounter with the Yakuzas gets him killed, he goes to heaven and back, ending up in an even more unlikely place where he and his friends strive to get away from it and thus discover the true meaning of life in the process. The movie ends up being a mind-bending trip that uses some of the most amazing and innovative animations ever created, something between David Lynch and Terry Gilliam, animated with a kaleidoscope of trends and styles and colors. 7.5/10

I saw Real Steel, a film about a future where robot boxing is the big thing.

I thought it was good, a nice storyline, great effects, and believeable in the near future. However the ending was a bit predictable, but that didnt take away from the spectacle. Id recommend it to anyone who likes action films, or is just looking for a good film.

:) Trust me, it will. Same director. Lots of intertwined plots all coming together eventually. Hilarious British humor.

As for "Real Steel", all I can think of is...

I might watch that now. I've got a sealed copy on Bluray which I've basically been just too lazy to watch. :dopey:
