What would you rate this game on a scale of 1-100?

80 overall.

The physics are great for the most part (except for that stupid, stupid jump in Capering).

Other than racing online or time trials though, there's no real game present. I see no reason to ever re-race single player races once I'm done with them.

Have your tried photo mode? Have you created your own tracks? Have you tried to challenge yourself by using different cars or tuning different? Are you a racing sim fan?

I know these scores are meaningless but I'm I really one of the few that just freaking loves it? What else on a console is better than this? Tell me so I can go buy it, I own forza so please don't mention that game.

I always thought that when this came out I would probably slow down on rFactor for awhile, but I haven't at all and I guess that says something. I haven't put enough hours into this game to really give it a fair rating but from what I have played so far (level 17) I say 75-ish area. That 25 point deduction is mainly due to the lack of tracks and the strange amount of stress your car can take before it becomes damaged. The menu is a bit odd but a menu/title screen has never taken anything away from gameplay.

Basically what I was saying when it first came out - around 85, give or take.

I generally love it, and I enjoy the feel of the driving, but it still suffers from some questionable design choices (which does matter, GT fanboys), and from having half as many Premium cars as it needed just to match its nearest competitor. Some of the tracks also leave more than a bit to be desired. It severely lacks in online features, like an online auction house and the fact that we can share little of anything with next to nobody when we should really be able to share lots of stuff with millions of people.

A couple people at Polyphony still need to be fired, though. Whoever programmed Bob to put the brake pedal to the floor on every single curve at Daytona superspeedway even though nobody's grandmother would even do that and programmed Bob to tap the brakes at the start/finish line there, and the guy who green-lighted standing starts there both need to be fired for sure because they are completely incompetent and have the collective IQ of a turnip.

At first it was 98% , but after playing the game for six weeks its gone down to 98% because theres some important things missing and a few things that needs changing. The most important thing missing is a save game function for endurance races.

whaoh....I haven't played the game yet but is the online multiplayer really that bad? I've heard that it lacks some crucial features that were promised before release. Can you at least set up private lobbies? How about send friend invites?

How is the lag?

I have been a massive fan of the GT series & all 3 generations of the PS1 were bought for GT alone.

The only thing I have always really hated about all previous GT is the poor AI.

and now GT5.... I am currently a-spec 26, b-spec 29;

Well at first I thought the AI had improved a little, now I don't think so. We still have a pack of cars that stick together and then 2 up the front that get some kind of performance boost (10-20% or so?)

It has been mentioned in the past, but the core features for racing offline are reasonable driving physics & decent competition. GT5 only manages one of those.

Pros:
PS3 / HDTV graphics
Mostly feels good to drive
Wheel feel pretty good.
Online performance pretty good
Nordschleife really is very good

Cons:
AI cars - still terrible
Damage is quite literally hilarious - it reminds me of Geoff Crammond's F1GP (version 2) only not as realistic ;)
Levelling system - a pain, illogical & not even needed
Unrestricted races - unrestricted races are not actually races
Online restrictions & options are limited.
Economics - too harsh and restrictive.
Menu System - awful
Loading times - awful
Customisation - illogical & poor

Summary
The game design is complete lunacy, introducing a badly designed artificial reward system to compensate for the lack of competetive racing due to an ancient and truly terrible AI.

Development focus was completely misplaced leaving us with super highly detailed dashboard trims, but for many premium cars, you can't even read the clock faces (even within 1m of a 42" HDTV)

There are many new 'features' most of which are fluff that have nothing to do with the core values of realistic racing in a wide range of cars. They would be nice to have in a well constructed competetive, challenging racing game, but don't add longevity to something that is simply not enjoyable to play on your own.

Many useful features from previous GT versions have been removed rather than improved upon (power points, saving in endurance, tuning options, tuning saves, sharing removable components between identical vehicles)

I was hoping that many of the issues would be fixed by updates, however the seasonal events seem to indicate there is something deeply wrong with the current development philosophy at PD (explanation after score).

For me personally the only thing that remains fun in this game is time trialling some new cars & then racing them against friends online.

Final Score
graphics: 85%
physics: 90%
online play: 75%
single gameplay: 20%
Overall Score: 40%

Some Notes
Seasonal Events:
There isn't (as far as I know) a real racing series in the world that is entirely unrestricted. There's a good reason for that. Each competitor wants to win and the rules are there to enforce a good competition (as well as to reduce unsightly maiming & death)

Because it is a competition and starting at the front is a big advantage a system of qualifying is almost always present to give everyone a fair attempt to start with that advantage.

The seasonal events demonstrate the problem with PD at the moment. They introduced some restrictions to make the events a challenge. However because the AI is simply not fit for purpose they had to use a staggered start sprint format basically lumbering the player with a 25 second starting penalty due to the staggered start. However at least it was a challenge.

The restrictions allow the player to judge their actual driving/tuning skills, since the challenge should certainly be achievable with the defined restrictions. Because of this I was able to discover several corners on several tracks where although it felt I was driving it well, I found I could actually gain, in some cases, up to a second. Just on a single corner!!

This is for me the real joy of racing, analysing each and every corner to see if I can improve against decent competition. I don't mind not winning (some of us will always be midfield) there are always more losers than winners in every race on earth - that is after all the point!

Once they removed the restrictions, they then remove the only objective yardstick you have to measure your performance with.

It seems PD have no intention of creating a racing game. I get the feeling that Kaz really would prefer to replace all the tracks with some city streets, traffic lights and car parks.

I just want a game with GT physics, a decent car list and competetive AI to race against on a wide range of tracks. Is that so hard?

Apparently it is.
(sorry for the lengthy rant, but this is the crap that runs around my head everytime I have to 'play' part of the game to get a new car to race online)

For starters I have to say I've never played a GT game before this one.

With that said I find this game to be a solid 90.

The actual driving is unlike any other game. It just feels great to drive so many different cars on many different tracks.

Graphics and sound are a mixed bag, at times it's beautifull and others just hidious.

But it's the gameplay that makes the game and in this it doesn't dissapoint.

My biggest gripe is the extreme long and illogical loading times. If the game would just load faster (mainly in menu's) it would be much more enjoyable

Well said mr serious. You make some vary valid points there.
The game badly needs an event generator where by the user can set his own AI and restrictions.

I guess they really did just run out of time on this project.
Can't see GT6 coming anytime soon within 5 years.

I find so much inconsistency in this game that I can't say. It's marvelous experience doing hot lap with F458 Italia on Nordschleife but it's very boring and almost funny to use standard car with hairdryer-like engine sound on track like Trial Mountain without revised textures, trees, surface and added details. Sometimes I would give it 40% but I can't because it's so great the other times...

About the one thing it gets worse than GT4 is the lack of content. GT4 had a whole lot more content.

Hell, I'd love to have GT3's dealership challenges back, too.

So the shadows are still jaggy, and the standard models look slightly worse than Forza's. The game is still fantastic to drive and a good challenge. Thanks to the problems with XP and events, I might not bother finishing the single-player game, but I'm enjoying just driving.

85/100

My God ! mr_serious, that is just WHAT this game needs. 👍 👍

I can only hope that sentiments like these (hey, I feel exactly the same as you ;) ) somehow....get back to Kaz and the "development" team at PD. :grumpy:

I LOVE what has been, the GT tour, from 1 through to 4, but sadly PD let this one run off the rails.....in so many areas.

I've only just scratched Lv26, Bob is not far behind @ Lv20. Still playing, but hardly :(....

Rating ?
To be fair, on the game, and to me personally, I'd be hard pressed going any higher than 50% 👎
Honestly, to me, it's ALL about the one on one aspect of playing the "GAME". I mean the AI in other words.
If the AI can not be raced against fairly, what is the point. ??
Online, don't give a toss about that. I did NOT buy the game to play ONLINE. :)
Combined with ALL the "luxuries" we got used to in the previous games, now being obviously omitted....WHAT were PD thinking when getting this together.....(shakes head... )

Some nice driving in a bad game. 79 from me after i finished all of the a-spec except the endurance races at level 29. Before the seasonal events i would have been even lower level.

Online is the only way to continue but it's been rather badly implemented this far and i haven't been able to try it out seriously yet.

Something I also forgot to mention: The collision physics are horrible for both online and offline.
I can either hit a wall or another car and neither of those types of collisions result in something that could be an acceptable result.
While in a race, I wouldn't be hitting people on purpose, I expect a realistic result when accidental contact does happen.

I'd give it 55-60 because its a game that PD got so self absorbed in they didnt finish it properly. GT2 was the pinnacle in my opinion.

The excitement has gone and reality showed up! Most dissappointing GT Title so far.

This is pretty much it. Every single aspect of the game has huge flaws and they don't seem to be too eager to fix them. Really disappointing.
50/100

At first i was shocked what GT5 got from most reviews but now i realize that they didn't even mention most of the crap that's in there therefore the low scores are actually not nearly low enough.

Needs more premium cars and some more European varients would be nice and it needs more tracks.

I've played the game side of things where i'm pretty much done but for me that was purely an exercise to build up my garage as the best fun to be had is racing online.

Offline Physics 15/20

In the first one of these threads, I gave it 70. But, now I have been playing for a couple of months that has went down to no more than 60.

I still love buying new [premium] cars and doing Time Trials, especially on Nurburgring, but that is just about all there is left for me in GT5. I have some endurance races left but can't be bothered levelling up to unlock them, simply because the races I would have to grind first are so mind numbingly mundane.

I spent a few days of solid game play on License tests before being told I don't need them anyway! wtf? :odd:

Cons:

Not enough events.
AI is still absolutely useless.
Damage model doesn't exist.
Menus are horrific, and unnecessarily cumbersome to wade through.
Can't save tuning set-ups in slots like before.
Can't save mid-championship.
Car modification/customisation is almost non-existent.
Only 17 out of 1032(?) cars can be Race Modified and it's only because of sites like GTP do I know which ones. What, is it a secret???

Pros:

Cars feel great to drive.
Graphics are lush.

Yeah, 60 at a push.

Response:
Bingo. It appears that you have hit the nail on the head.

Random Rant:
I have a hard time believing most scores above a 70.

Here's some flaws I see with the game (from the standpoint of a hardcore sim racer).

The AI. It's too slow. B-spec also makes me want to snap my disc in half.

Glaring physics flaws. Things like Lift-off oversteer and collision physics are either modelled improperly or are completely missing and there are inconsistencies when comparing online physics to offline physics.

The lack of customization options for our lobbies in online mode.

Unstable online servers. I keep getting disconnected from my own lounge while I'm on a connection that will stay connected flawlessly to any other game on any other platform.

Falsely advertised "realistic damage."

Pointless grinding. I don't like doing Roundy Rounds on Indy. The seasonal events don't help me much, except to get credits to buy new cars and tune cars.

Lack of single player structure. There are too few events for the amount of cars in the game. Also, all of the events, excluding endurance races, are sprints.

Graphics inconsistencies. There is a lot of aliasing on shadows and around smoke when it's near the car. The people in the grandstands are very low quality, the 3D model of trackside spectators, the ones that cheer you on, are also very low quality. Let's also not forget the trees.

Bad and jumbled menu design. GT4 has a good menu design, which follows a logical arrangement from a map. GT5's menu is so disorganized. It looks like the GUI designer said "I'll just randomly throw shapes at the screen and then randomly decide what goes where."

Bad net code that can't smoothly show the position of other people accurately without major teleporting. And please don't tell me about how this isn't possible. iRacing has the best net code of any racing sim because even people on a slow connection appear to drive on the track smoothly.

What I think Polyphony should do now, is instead of trying to fix everything at once and doing a half-arsed job at it, they should focus on one or two things at a time until they get them right or very close.

What should they work on first? I won't decide, but they need to do something.

Have to give it a 72.
I really love the game but after 5yrs of development I was expecting a lot more. It is just not finished.

For the problem of grinding, combining Spec A and B with save function in endurance race is a possible way to solve. PD, please listen.

90 I'm still playing it solid since it came out so I enjoy it and I've certainly got my moneys worth out of it.
