With all due respect to Americans, they can excel at many things, but when it comes to geography or cultural knowledge, man, they are incredibly ignorant in general.
Of course, I've met some Americans that are very well educated in those aspects too, but definitely it's a minority.
Please, don't take offense, as said before, this is with utmost respect.
What really amazes me is the role of their educational institutions. While they have most of the best Universities in the world, yet other instances can't make the kids/teens learn very basic geography stuff. It could be part of the "we are the world leaders" attitude shown by their people, thus justifying said ignorance in those matters as "we don't need other languages, we don't need to know where other countries are, we don't need to know anything about that culture, etc."
Moreover, Americans in general are very well wrapped by their own culture and entertainment to care for other stuff.
Just my two cents on this.
