So does that mean my perfectly functional Win7 box will automagically turn into a Win10 box unless I turn off automatic update?!?

From the reports yea. Which since the mainstream for Win 7 is done they just figure to give it out.

Forbes
Microsoft has just informed me that it will be delivering the free upgrade through Windows Update, so users should be sure and turn on automatic updates to get their devices ready. They’ll have more information to share as we get closer to launch

I hope they will also provide ISOs that use your Win 7 key.
It is more annoying upgrading than clean installing at times

My knowledge on Windows 10 is very limited. From one screenshot, though, I noticed a return to the classic Start Menu mixed in with some elements of the Metro style menu bits. Most important is the classic Start Menu, which I vastly appreciate. Other than that, I am not as educated on Windows 10.

Wow! We've come a long way! I still somewhat remember when the latest of-the-moment version of Windows was Windows 95, and I remember being at a Wal-Mart trying out Win95 on some of the PCs then. I still miss every version of Windows before XP for playing DOS games natively- though there's nothing wrong with DOSBox. Before I get too much more nostalgic and show my age, I'll end this post here.

Just installed the preview on an old Vista laptop, and the start button isn't working  The screen resolution's messed up too, stuck on 1024X768. Well, they did say it was going to have bugs.

Edit: Windows update seems to be frozen too. Also, no Cortana. I wasn't really interested in this, but I was looking forward to getting this on my Surface. Which won't be getting Windows 10 :grumpy:

Edit 2: A reboot seems to have fixed the start button, now to fix the screen resolution.

Don't expect Cortana until the official release..

Cortana is available, just not in Australia.
Also, the computer randomly disconnected from the RGB cable and switched to HDMI, but for some reason it now seems to think that there are 3 displays, when there are only 2. Well, at least it works.

With the limited time offer, what does one do after that time frame when one does a fresh install/format.

I format C every 12-18 months, fresh install.

I do "like" that aat least after Win8 ,win8.1 they do seem to have understood that most don't want metro and "apps" on their PC.

Cortana seems really cool, especially the assistant side off it. You can be anywhere in the room and just ask to play song or movie X 👍 but I could imagine with always on, Windows account-email linked, some huge privacy and security issues....

Onedrive can go home. They should have given a preinstalled "homecloud". Your connection, your HDD, your private files on your HDD, not a server somewhere in the world.

....

But it's windows, which makes the complaints go away with user input (firewall, offline accounts,...)

Does anyone know how to clear the cache in the MSN News app?

I have noticed the app has ballooned in size to 6.41 GB because of downloading news stories even if you don't use it!

I put Windows 10 on an old HP elitebook 2530p and for the most part it works well. Before the latest build it would lock up and make a buzzing noise. To me it is like win7/win8.1 combined. They also stole a feature from Linux with the ability to add virtual desktops. I use it everyday at work and outside the issue I mentioned it has worked very well. Most of the programs that I use install with no problems. To be honest I would almost buy a Windows 10 machine and not replace it some version of Linux.

Are, we allowed to discuss this?
"Anyone with a qualified device can upgrade to Windows 10, including those with pirated copies of Windows. We believe customers over time will realize the value of properly licensing Windows and we will make it easy for them to move to legitimate copies," a Microsoft spokesperson told Mashable in an email.

It is Microsoft's official approach and is a very smart move against piracy!

Yes as he isn't posting links to pirated software or saying go pirate this. He is just talking about piracy as a subject. its good move for Microsoft,A lot of 3rd world country's pirate the os because it's so expensive for them to buy legit, so for them it's all good. But the pc grip on the world continues maybe Osx will be free soon as a reaction.

Seems as MS is moving windows 10 to a SAAS platform (Software As A Service.) Not in the traditional SAAS model, where you don't pay monthly your software doesn't work, but seems updates at least for enterprise might be tied in this way.

Further reading says, "Free for One Year" in regards to Win7/8 devices

In January, Microsoft announced that Windows 10 will be a free upgrade for users running Windows 7 or Windows 8. Non-genuine versions were not mentioned at the time. The catch is that Windows 10 will be free for the first year; after that, users will need to pay.

http://mashable.com/2015/03/18/pirated-windows-free-upgrade/

Software Assurance (SA) is an annuity-like agreement that comes with a bevy of benefits, notably upgrade rights, in return for fixed payments over the life of the contract. Historically, businesses primarily paid for SA to receive those OS upgrades.

"When Microsoft says 'Windows as a service,' that means they believe Windows 10 will have continuous value and that they should get continuous payment," Gillette opined. That "continuous payment" could be in the form of SA or a more straight-forward subscription; Gillette wasn't sure.

http://www.computerworld.com/articl...et-ready-to-pay-to-go-slow-on-windows-10.html

Now in reading the 2nd article, it seems the SAAS would be only for enterprise, but details are still slim about this. How this translates down to someone who purchases a Windows 10 license, a legit win7/8 owner that upgrades, or a pirated 7/8, it will be interesting to see.

I wonder how long Windows10 will stay around before Windows11 comes out. Too many questions unanswered at this point, but as an IT manager, it's got me asking questions.

MS offering that upgrade sure is nice... However, Win 10 has to turn out to be a good OS for me to care first

They seem to be on the right track so far, though, from what I've heard.

If this has Windows Media Center as part of it for free, then I'll be more then happy jump ship very quickly

the first year free sounds fishy to me, not only for pirated versions, but for all.

What if MS decides to charge after the first year. The question about the subscription model is never answered by MS. A clear no would clear the air,... We all remember the Office fallout

What if after the upgrade, your Key is then linked with Win10 and not your Win7/8 anymore....

Why not release an iso, so people could do a clean install.
What happens if you want to format your PC...

Clearly if they do this, they will criple their entire business.

I will wait and see.

All the upgrades do look good on Win10, but time will tell.
Though I have a Xbone feel to it, with Cortana listening,... good that I don't have a mic constant on or a webcam....

Hmm very intresting points surly they would not do that with the uproar with always online x box one saga that they backed down from. Could you imagine working on your pc at 12 midnight you get locked out but an important meeting or conference starts at 8am the next day. And all you work is locked and you cannot access it. It be a disaster

This thread probably could be merged with the Windows 10 thread.

This move does make sense, I can imagine lots of copies out there are pirated, especially Windows XP in developing nations. It's in Microsoft's interest as well as everyone else to get those out of circulation because they cause the most trouble with viruses spreading around the globe and are probably not updated, which then gives MS even more bad press.

However if this is a gateway move to get people onto a future subscriptions based Windows it sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. I read they want to employ the same business model as Office 365. You would get basic Windows for free and then pay for everything else.

Apple can give the software away for free/cheap because they control the hardware and get more than enough profit from that. MS have tried to become a hardware manufacturer with the Surface but 90% of the business is still profit from software.

I wish they offered the ability to move from XP to 10 OR Windows 7, because some older machines will not run 10. I would probably move everything to 10 if it doesn't suck (2 laptops, 2 desktops, 1 tablet).

Unlikely. Even with copies of Windows now if they're not verified for whatever reason then they don't immediately die. They give you a warning for a while, and then kinda sorta stop working but still work a bit.

You wouldn't get blindsided by your computer suddenly stopping working, is what I'm saying. You'd see it coming a long way away. One assumes that the new Windows would be similar.

I was more thinking about always listening feature... after the fallout from samsung TV's, the barbie doll , companies need to fine tune this listening feature
