Windows... 10?!?

Guys, I know that some might fail to install the upgrade. One thing for sure, though:
1. Forcing an update via CMD doesnt work since it will display error at the end.

2. Using an ISO might work for most people. However some might encounter the infamous "Something Happened" bug. Plus it doesnt help when you already has the full $WindowsBT folder but also downloading the ISO which might hurt the quota for some people.

So heres how to enable it, the safer, easy, and most quota friendly way:

0 (prepare): You need to clean up the SoftwareDistribution>Download like stated on previous page. Or just use MS FixIt tools (fix windows update) on the net.

1. Open Regedit. You can type it on the search bar and it will show you.

2. Open Folder:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>SOFTWARE>Microsoft>Windows>CurrentVersion>WindowsUpdate>OSUpgrade

3. Add the new registry of D-WORD (32-bit) Value. Name it: AllowOSUpgrade (Case sensitive)

4. Set the value to 1 (The -eximal part does not need change).

5. Check again the update. It should have welcomed you with the upgrade to windows 10 afterwards.

6. Click "Get Started" and voila!

Total is 2,711.4 GB But in reality it grabs less from the net, that is if you happen to already have the full $WindowsBT on C: folder.
Thanks! Because of this both my PC's with windows 8.1 are upgraded!

Went ahead and updated my desktop after having no issues with the surface.
No problems, only thing bugging me is the boot time is considerably longer.

Now I'm having an issue. My desktop finally finished updating and it won't allow me to change the resolution to 1920x1080. I'm on the latest NVIDIA driver. Going to try reinstalling the driver.

*edit*
After reinstalling the driver three times it fixed itself

Microsoft is staggering the release using windows update,
If you use microsofts tool to download the ISO you just need to burn it to either a DVD or USB flash drive and boot off it.

You're probably getting error 80240020 on your computer. There's two methods to fix this:

Method 1

  1. Delete everything you find in C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download

  2. Open command prompt with administrator rights and enter "wuauclt.exe /updatenow" (without " ")

  3. Windows Update will redownload the files and then it should work.

Method 2

  1. Download the media creation tool from this site: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

  2. Use the option to upgrade your system (do not directly go for a clean install!).
Tried both methods and still nothing. Must do something wrong Or I must have done something wrong a few days ago.

No upgrade, just a thank you for reserving (or whatever it is called in English) windows 10.

I just launched the setup.exe in the hidden folder it downloads the files to before it compresses them into an ISO (I presume?). That did the thing.

Tried the Regedit way?
Yes.

I give up. Windows 10 can go to 🤬.

I'm going to reinstall this pc with windows 7 (clean install) and keep using windows 7. A clean windows 7 reinstallment is overdue by a couple of week.

I need to reinstall windows 7.

So since I have made an image of windows 7 after install of all things and activation I made a full image of it using the Windows back up image tool.
Will install windows 10 activate it to make it free since you have to install and activate with in a year.
After that I will revert to windows 7.

Do you:

1. Already enables the automatic download and install update (Recommended)?
2. Check the Resource monitor, click the network tab, and see if the svchost is running high (+-100k bytes instead of a small number.)
3. Check if theres already a $BTwindows or something folder on C: and measured at 3+ GB? (Must be set to show hidden files on foldet options)
4. Check if theres still has a Get Windows 10 showing.
5. Check if all windows updates prior to W10 are installed?
6. Check again the steps I given?

Thank you the help but I just did a full clean reinstall of windows 7. The windows 10 icon for the free upgrade is gone.

:bowdown::cheers:

No more windows 10 worries. 👍

The only persistent problem I've faced so far with Windows 10 is the Start Menu and Taskbar sometimes not working. I am hoping this is just a bug that happens from time to time that can be fixed. I don't want to keep having to reset the computer just to regain control of the Start Menu. I even took a recommendation of restarting Explorer. It was taking too long to reload everything, so I basically restarted the PC manually. This is about the only problem I face with Windows 10. Other than that, my reception of Windows 10 are positive.

Wel I have two problems, I'm running a temporary setup of Windows 10 before I do a clean install (no idea how I will do this tbh, as the iso tool doesn't seem to work and I don't know if the reservation will pop up if I clean install Windows 7 again). My computer randomly wakes at 3:30am :grumpy: for no reason, and the search function in the windows menu seems to be broken because I get no results.

I can tell you the reason why it wakes up at 3:30 am. It is installing updates automatically. Quite a few people are annoyed at the feature, but I welcome it because I don't have to worry about installing them in the first place.

My computer is insanely loud. It scares the 🤬 out of me every night.

Edit: Why does Windows Modern Set Up Host take so damn long? It's been at 0% downloading to a USB for half an hour now

Edit 2: I've been stuck in this screen for hours now:

It has likely done next to nothing in all that time. Best to close and start up the tool again.

Tried and the same thing happens.

Edit: Now I just get an error that I need to restart the computer to run the tool. Restarting does nothing though and the tool no longer works. Need some help.

Edit 2: Restarted the computer a few times, now i just get static through my speakers. I'm wiping Windows 10 and putting on Windows 7. Hopefully I can reserve Windows 10 at this point of time.

...Updated the OS to Windows 10 four days ago, and I've run into a weird issue: inconsistent volume levels.

I generally leave the volume at around 15-20, but after some period of inactivity weird thing happens and the volume is increased to an ear-splitting level. Touching the volume control sees the issue slink away, only to creep back in again when I don't notice it.
This happens regardless of whether I'm using external speakers, earphones both wired and wireless.

I thought about updating the driver for the sound card, but I'm getting the message that it is up to date in the Device manager section.

Any suggestions? :boggled:

Uninstall the driver completely and then try to reinstall it. Windows tends to say things are up to date/working even when they are not sometimes (something to do with generic drivers). Does it happen all the time or when you are doing something specific?

...All. The. Freaking. Time. :irked:

I went online and found update driver for the card so I'm gonna do it manually. I'll see what happens after that. :)

I reinstalled Realtek and the static issue is gone, still removing Windows 10 temporarily while I fix my computer, but I have to say it's not too bad.

Well, one solution would be to properly turn off your computer. Another option would be to simply deactivate the scheduled maintenance or wake timers.

Just wondering, why is Microsoft slowly rolling out the release of Windows 10? I'm still waiting for my pc to get the notification of downloading Windows 10. Apple on the other hand put OS X Yosemite on the store and allowed everyone (including my Mac) to download it on release day. So, whats with the stalling?

There are more Windows PCs than there are Macs, especially in the US. The release date rollout to 190 countries is a bit respectable given the huge volume of the OS.

Because OS X is for Apple products only.

Try and find how many different PC's there are out there that need drivers etc. etc.

Well the slow boot of my pc after the upgrade finally bugged me enough that I decided to do a fresh install.
In reality it was needed anyway as I hadn't with my W7 since building the pc a few years back. During the process I regained 50gb on my ssd after re-installing the programs I actually use., just goes to show how much crap is accumulated over time.

All went very smoothly apart from Origin for the kids games that I eventually sorted out, can't say that was a surprise though.

Pc thankfully boots super quick again and after a day or two of use must say I like it.
Now just to re-calibrate Mrs Shaun on it and the final hurdle will be overcome.
