A monthly charge is beyond stupid. Firstly I wouldn't buy Windows 10 if it wasn't free because it is so utterly junk in its current mix of "7,8&10" state. Secondly with so many people moving to mobile OS's now it's like MS want to kill the desktop off completely, this is the total opposite of what they should be doing to keep the sector going. 3rd parties are not going to tolerate this model because customers will go to them complaining about having to pay to use a machine they in essence purchased. You purchase a machine, you get a OS to use it for the life of the device if you wish, thats how it's always worked.

It's so ironic, Windows 10 is spyware central stealing your data so they can monetize it yet they are now asking you to pay for it.... pay for spyware to make money off you? I really have heard it all!

How exactly is Windows spying on us? I remember turning off a bunch of that stuff upon install. Then after install, go to "Settings" and there's a bunch of tabs to turn almost all of the data usage/collection stuff off.

There is still some things that still monitor you that it does not ask about.

And the fact that express is basically YES to everything.
Says they don't want average joe to know since it skips all those pages that involve it.

Even if you turn everything off it is still sending a HUGE amounts of data to Microsoft's servers. That's why there are 3rd party programs springing up to disable it all.

Also as Grayfox said your average upgrader will agree to all this being set to on when they upgrade to Windows 10.

Won't be the first time Microsoft has done something stupid. And undoubtedly won't be the last.

every subscriber to Office 365 has already accepted this business model. You are free to install any OS of your choice, nobody says you have to use the OS that comes with the machine.

When Win10 moves to a paid subscription, you will have two choices: pay up, or abandon you investment in software (such as games) that only runs under Windows. Microsoft is perfectly aware of this.

Yes, it's much like paying for television (cable) for the privilege of watching commercials.

Key word: "almost".

First point: a machine running Win10 with all the feedback, etc options turned off manually still contacts Microsoft 5000+ times a day. Microsoft won't say why.

Second point: so okay you've switched off some options. Microsoft has a demonstrated track record of switching preferences back, or even ignoring preference options. Just ask anybody who does not want this "upgrade" to Win10. I see no reason to believe Microsoft will turn over a new leaf here.

I remember my office IT dept laughing when MS tried to sell us Office 365, yeah like we are going to switch from a one off volume purchase of Office 2010 which we could use for the next decade to something we have to pay for every month!

Using any other OS on these machines is beyond the realm of comprehension for average people. Sure they can install Ubuntu but they are not going to like not being able to use programs and features they are used to. Also driver support is patchy for these machines because they were designed for Windows. Soon installing another OS might not even be possible at all if MS get their way in implementing chip based OS lockdown.

Also many manufacturer warranties are currently based on keeping the OS it came with and are void the minute the OS is changed.

I can't believe people pay for television channels with adverts. I pay the licence fee in the UK and get advert free TV on the BBC and I would expect if I bought Sky for example to give me their channels advert free. I have never understood why people tolerate this.

If MS want to make Windows a service they can go ahead. I can see it massively reducing their market share at a time when their market share is already being pummelled by mobile OS's.

Yep it switched them back after an update for some reason. Oh well. I'm going back to Linux with Crossover and keeping my W7 CD nearby if I need a VM.

So I've been considering, but putting off the upgrade. I decided this weekend was the time, what with being the last weekend of the free upgrade. I imaged my machine to an external USB for fall-back, hit the icon in the system tray and told it to go. It says starting download, and shows the spinning dots.

2 hours later, it looks the same, and Taks Manager shows NO network traffic.

I think I changed my mind. 7 is running just fine.

I'm not doing it. I was presented with a popup ad counting down the seconds until I can't get it for free anymore and... well that's not why I change my OS. I don't change my OS because it's free. I change it because there's some feature I want, or some compatibility... Microsoft is just not going about courting me properly. Sell me on it, don't try to scare me into it.

I'll probably try Win7 inside linux when they pull the plug on Win7 support.

I just came back to the PC and now there are two windows running the download, showing about 20% downloaded. I killed one of them, but I'm still not sure it'll complete the download this week...... :)

I've seen Windows 10, it has some things I'm not too keen on but it's a bajillion times better than 8 ever was, especially once you turn off the apps in the start button, and as an IT tech I have to support systems running it, even though I don't have one anywhere.

If it's disgusting and breaks everything I use, well, that's why I made the image first.

I just took the plunge on my desktop before the free upgrade expires myself. I installed it on a separate drive from my original Win 7 installation, so if something somehow goes fubar with Win 10, i can always go back to 7. Now the joy of installing everything weeee

I got rid of WIndows, went back to Linux. Like Grayfox said, hopefully WIndows 10 N ends up being a non-spying version. If that is the case, maybe I'll get it and put it in a VM.

EDIT: If you're willing to learn Linux and its command line, and pay ~$60 for Crossover Linux if you want to run some WIndows apps, it's a very good alternative. No spying, runs much more smoothly.

Hows Linux for gaming? Many issues with compatibility and troubleshooting as it's not as common worldwide?

Some games will work in WINE/PlayOnLinux/Crossover. But gaming in Linux is basically non-existent. If you are gaming, then Windows is what you should use. That's not really a fault of Linux, it's a fault of the game devs who decided to make it only run on Windows. I game on console, so not really an issue here.

Okay guys, i have installed windows 10 for the second time to see if it works. Last time i changed from windows 8 to 10, my WiFi didn't want to work. Now i'm facing some problems as well: 1. My audio only works when i put in my headphones on, doesn't work without one. 2. There's no drive for my in-built microphone therefore i can't use the mic.

Any help?

You'll have to find the drivers manually then. Google "[laptop name] audio drivers]".

Basically what Ameer said, also try out the manufacturer's website has if it even supports your device for Windows 10.

I'll look around for you, I need something to do anyways :p

EDIT: Is your BIOS updated?

And..... the download shows "Failed" in update history. Twice.

Apparently they don't really want me to have it, at least not as much as it would seem by how they annoy me over it.

7 it is for the foreseeable future.

You can install the update manually.

I would say you might have a corruption in windows

Install another copy of windows on a spare HDD, apply all updates and download the windows 10 update.

Otherwise speak to MS about it, they will go out of their way to help seeing as how they want everyone on windows 10.

According to rumours after the big Anniversary Update in a few days time you won't be able to disable Cortana anymore, if you have disabled it the update will turn it back on

Why are you doing all these things MS! Stop turning Windows into Facebook!

Some people will find a way to disable it.
A core file that is needed, they will block it on the router.

Forced spyware and Cortana, ads and maybe a monthly subscription service too in the long run. No wonder they handed it out 'for free'

Hmm... I've heard that the planes of the future won't have any Windows...

I tried to upgrade to Windows 10 this week but to no avail. I was left with that blue screen at start-up with no way to get rid of it, which didn't exactly fill me with confidence about upgrading when the installer doesn't even work properly. Finally I got the option to 'Cancel Upgrade' this morning (an option on the blue screen that strangely wasn't present before) and so I cancelled it, so no free upgrade for me.
