So a windows update has come and gone and now it's loading up a recovery disc option instead of windows.
Any idea on what should be done?

Had that on my laptop as well the other day. I just entered the BIOS and rebooted it and it worked flawlessly again.

Now that July 29th has come and gone, is it safe to turn Windows Update back on yet?

Yeah I'm also interested to hear what Microsoft is going to do regarding the upgrade nagware. Surley they can't keep it offering something for free that you can no longer have! I don't think they have revoked those KB updates yet so I would wait a while.

Knowing Microsoft the nagware will remain and now it will say to pay up! It will upgrade you without your permission then ask for your credit card details!

I'd heard (can't find the article though) an upcoming update was going to remove it but it wouldn't surprise me in the least if they end up replacing it with new nagware/adware, as you say.

I wonder does Microsoft track us that much to a point where they can see what we type real time even in notepad.
That's one of the things Cortana does. It knows what to suggest, in part, by watching what you type.

Although it's more of a keylogger than a realtime monitor.

Yeah it seems through various methods including Cortana it monitors everything you search, type, ask and name (files). Then it will report back to MS a couple of times a day so it can build a picture of who you are to create a marketing profile. Currently Cortana is optional but the Anniversary Update on 2nd August will make it mandatory.

I had updated my Windows 10 earlier today with an update package. One welcome change I noted right away was the use of colored menu windows. It was tough to know what window is the active window when they are all white. I at least now know which window is active by seeing a color other than white up top (granted you don't have white as your primary color). The whole update process took about three hours total from downloading updates and then installing them.

Even through all of this, I actually still don't miss Windows 8.1 after going from that to Windows 10. If it were up to me, I still miss Windows 98 as a gamer in wanting to play DOS games and not need to have DOSBox (not that I have a problem with DOSBox).

Anniversary update is live now.
Going to do the download and install now so I don't have to worry about it later.

You should setup a retro PC just for playing old games. I have various machines running Windows 3.1, 95, XP etc and its fun just to revisit them from time to time to get a nostalgia kick.

Well, the one good thing I found in the Anniversary Update is that the time is now shown on both monitors, unlike before! Sadly though, it looks like my defaults have been changed AGAIN.

Yep, same here. Just got the update, a whole bunch of things have been reset. Folder locations, Colour settings, default apps etc. I'm also not sure why I've got a microphone symbol in Cortana to enable 'start listening' bearing in mind I don't have a microphone....

You might want to go through all the privacy settings while you're at it. Location, for example, was turned back on automatically for me after the update.

EDIT: I'm checking if there was anything else changed and lots of things have like you're saying. It's basically like a fresh Windows install.

I just select Custom Options when Windows 10 boots up after updating and turn everything off. Though there's still the feature here and there that is enabled.

And it seems my way of disabling Cortana still works, as well.

The privacy stuff came up during the update stuff so I turned all that off again but yeah, it's reset most other settings as well. Also randomly deleted a shortcut from my desktop, a custom launcher that I now have to remember how I made.

Microsoft has a history of changing settings back to default after any sort of update.

I happened to turn my windows machine on yesterday and noticed the "get windows 10" icon in the system tray is gone (yay!).

The machine also informed me that updates are available. So even with updates turned completely off, they managed to change at least one of my settings.

Windows keeps getting better and better. I can't believe I have ubuntu running on my windows machine.

So apparently the update removes my AMD graphic drivers and had to redownload it again.

Cant play any games for now. Thanks Microsoft.

Thankfully, I'm an insider member, so I am a glorified beta tester. Had this update on my system for weeks with no real issues.

DON'T update to the Windows 10 anniversary update if you use an SSD for the OS with everything else stored on a HDD!

As per usual they release something without testing it, OS on solid state and files on mechanical is a very common setup. At least MS have owned up to the issue.

A little bit late aren't they when it's an automatic update. I do indeed have that setup but thankfully no problems.

This is exactly why automatic updates are stupid, companies release buggy updates all the time and it's better if not everyone ends up with a busted machine day 1 because of their incompetence. Good thing yours didn't mess up.

Microsoft has released it's plan for Windows 7 and 8.1 updates... make them like Windows 10...

They will no longer let you choose specific KB updates, it will be a bundled pack each month and they won't tell you what inside. So its an all or nothing approach only one step better than the forced auto updates on 10.

Yet again, "simpler" really means less choice!

Sounds like come the end of next month it might be time to turn updates off altogether again.

Wondering if anyone that has updated to the latest version of W10 has had a freezing problem after use of say maybe 3 or 4 hours of the PC being on. Never had this issue until Saturday and I decided to do a reset and reinstall the OS to see if that would solve anything, roll back GPU drivers, but the issue still persists. Hopefully the patch Microsoft is coming out with solves this issue... or maybe I'm in the minority here.

I don't know if I can speak on the issue since I am an insider member, but I can tell you that I have similar issues. The Aero feature when hovering over Groove music player locks up after a few hours use. In what might be a stroke of luck, Microsoft might have pushed out an update for insider users earlier than expected, so that issue might be fixed in a later update for normal users.

I haven't encountered that problem (yet), the only 'bug' that I faced was having all my preferences reset.
