Latvala is out half a kilometre into the first proper stage after hitting a rock, Ogier is flying...

I havent followed WRC much this year but one of my favorite is the tunnel! Mexico is busy this week with WRC and San Felipe 250 on the Baja side.

Mads Ostberg is out ( technical problem :guilty: )

Ogier has dropped over half a minute because he had to re-open a gate that somebody from the bottom of the gene pool had closed, doesn't change the leaderboard though because Hirvonen lost 2 minutes with a puncture.

BREAKING NEWS:
Ogier wins Rally Mexico

Sebastien Ogier has taken victory in Rally Mexico and secured a maiden win on gravel for Volkswagen's Polo R World Rally Car on only the manufacturer's third event.

Ogier, 29, held the lead of the Leon-based rally from Friday’s sixth stage, eventually winning by 3min 28.9sec from Citroen Total Abu Dhabi team driver Mikko Hirvonen at the wheel of a Citroen DS3.

Thierry Neuville was third, 54.9sec behind Hirvonen, in a Qatar World Rally Team Ford Fiesta RS.

More news to follow.

Ogier is really a good driver, I'm happy he can finally be free from team order and win as he wants. More than 3mn on the 2nd driver is also quite impressing.

Overall top 10 classification;

  1. S. Ogier - 4:30:31.2
  2. M. Hirvonen - 4:33:58.0 (+3:26.8)
  3. T. Neuville - 4:34:50.8 (+4:19.6)
  4. D. Sordo - 4:36:33.7 (+6:02.5)
  5. N. Al-Attiyah - 4:39:01.6 (+8:30.4)
  6. C. Atkinson - 4:41:55.0 (+11:23.8)
  7. K. Block - 4:42:15.3 (+11:44.1)
  8. B. Guerra Jr. - 4:43:12.3 (+12:41.1)
  9. M. Prokop - 4:44:56.0 (+14:24.8)
  10. E. Novikov - 4:47:42.3 (+17:11.1)

After Day 1 of Rally de Portugal, Sebastien Ogier leads by 4.4 seconds over Dani Sordo. Mads Ostberg had a 3 second lead over Ogier until he rolled in SS3 after mishearing a pace note. He said, "I thought it was a '5 left minus', but it definitely wasn't." He hopes to restart tomorrow. Jari-Matti Latvala is in 3rd, 11.4 seconds behind Ogier and Mikko Hirvonen is 4th, 16.2 seconds behind the leader, with Thierry Neuville behind him in 5th, Nasser Al-Attiyah in 6th, Evgeny Novikov in 7th and Martin Prokop in 8th. Michal Kosciuszko is in an impressive 9th after the bonnet of his Mini flew open mid-stage.

VW's are in BIG trouble, leading 1-2 this morning but both have had problems on the first stage of the day, Latvala is running with just front wheel drive and Ogier's problem is said to be with the clutch, Hirvonen is up to P2...

From what I can see Ogier has it fairly safe as long as he can get to the end of the final stage, with a 49 second lead. However, the last stage is over 50 kilometres in length, so this could still go right down to the wire... :)

Sebastien Loeb will contest this year's Pike's Peak, driving a Peugeot 208 T16 in the Unlimited class:

It's strange. Whenever Loeb was rallying for Citroen I'd sincerely hope his car broke down or someone else would be able to outpace him or something so that he wouldn't win for once. But as soon as I hear he's driving a Peugeot I want him to win dominantly. I have no idea why I love Peugeot so much, I think just irrationally decided to start supporting them back when I first saw them competing in motorsports (probably when they had their second go at the WRC in 1999/2000) and haven't been able to stop cheering for them since. I was so happy when they won at Le Mans in 2009, although that might just have been because it wasn't just Audi winning for once... This has turned into a rant about my love for a maker of slightly naff French cars now, so I'm just going to shut up and say that I also love first generation Renault Twingos.

EDIT: AND SHORT OF SOMETHING AMAZING HAPPENING OR DISQUALIFICATION ON A TECHNICALITY, OGIER SEEMS TO BE THE VICTOR! http://www.wrc.com/results/2013/vodafone-rally-de-portugal/stage-times/?category=wrc&stageno=15

SS1, Super Especial Branca Unico (6.04 kilometres): First blood to Ogier

This is one of the championship’s most popular super special stages. It is located on the edge of the rally base of Carlos Paz and two cars at a time cover two laps of a twisty circuit. The surface is good and jumps, hairpins and fast sections provided great entertainment for the tens of thousands of people enjoying the May Day holiday. Sebastien Ogier laid down a marker for the weekend when he won this afternoon’s opening test by 1.9sec from Dani Sordo.
The championship leader was paired with arch rival Sebastien Loeb in the highlight heat. Ogier’s Volkswagen Polo R outgunned his fellow Frenchman’s Citroen DS3 to claim the first bragging rights in the duel that everyone is talking about.

Ogier was relaxed and smiling at the finish, saying: “It was a nice feeling but the rally starts tomorrow. This was really fun and nice for the spectators.”
Loeb was third fastest in his first gravel stage since the opening day of Rally de España last November and paid tribute to his rival.

“Ogier was really fast. I did a lot of mistakes, usually I don’t do so many. It’s a great atmosphere here in Argentina. We will try to do a good rally and try to find a rhythm,” he said.
Sordo was a convincing winner in his head-to-head with Mads Ostberg. “I didn’t push like hell because I didn’t want to make a mistake at the beginning. This is only for show, but it’s part of the rally so we had to be careful,” said the Citroen DS3 driver. Ostberg was seventh fastest in his Ford Fiesta RS.

Qualifying stage winner Jari-Matti Latvala was fourth in his Polo R, edging out fellow Finn Mikko Hirvonen’s Citroen DS3. Latvala missed the rally last year through injury and admitted: “I was a bit cautious in places on the first lap while I found my rhythm because I haven’t driven this stage for a while.”

Andreas Mikkelsen was fifth in another Polo R, just ahead of Hirvonen.
Michal Kosciuszko felt the dampers were too soft on his Mini John Cooper Works while a deflated Martin Prokop was unhappy with the engine in his Fiesta RS.

Rally Acropolis was eventful, with Sebastien Ogier having to retire on the first day and fight his way back up to finish 10th. Jari-Matti Latvala was there to save the day for VW and claim his first win in the Polo and his first win in Greece. Dani Sordo was the fastest Citroen claiming 2nd, and Thierry Neuville set the standard for Ford claiming 3rd. Andreas Mikkelsen did a great job finishing 4th and managed to grab a few stage wins too.

Top 10 results;
1. J. Latvala, 3:31:01.2
2. D. Sordo, +1:50.0
3. T. Neuville, +2:14.1
4. A. Mikkelsen, +3:55.1
5. N. Al-Attiyah, +4:12.6
6. M. Ostberg, +5:48.7
7. M. Hirvonen, +8:00.7
8. M. Prokop, +8:01.2
9. E. Novikov, +8:11.8
10. S. Ogier, +10:10.3

Also, Citroen have submitted a protest against Volkswagen, but the reason is yet unknown. Some people are saying it could be because of a hydraulic handbrake VW have been using or a spare battery they used on Friday. The three VW Polos are being held along with two DS3s from Citroen by the stewards. More info is here.

Good to see Latvala back on top again. Let's hope this Citroen protest doesn't ruin it for him.

In other news, KUBICA TAKES ACROPOLIS RALLY WRC 2 WIN!

http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/107828

At a moment like this I feel we should all express our gratitude towards the fact that modern medicine and medical professionals can allow someone who has suffered injuries like those of Kubica's or Massa's to recover to an extent that they can go back to doing the things they love. (Namely, driving racing cars)

Hirvonen has lost 7th place, Martin Prokop was originally given the wrong stage time but it has been rectified, all 3 VW's have survived trial by stewards regarding illegal batteries.

Hyundai are reportedly planning a shoot-out in Finland some time in August to decide who will get the factory seats for the i20 WRC. I've heard that up to eight drivers will be in contention for the seat, with Juho Hanninen, Jarkko Nikara and Pontus Tiedmand all specifically named as taking part.

I've also heard that Citroen will withdraw from the WRC at some point in the near future, though I can't find anything to support it.

Looks like the greatest driver of all time is coming back this August, probably driving a Subaru Impreza R4 prepared by his own Tommi Makinen Racing team.
