Buy a new GTR used or auction instead actually? Idk lol
I'd go for a (manual) BMW 320d, new with as high a spec as I can.
180bhp, RWD, lots of MPG, low tax, relaxed but fun when you want it to be, well made, comfortable and always useable. Is there a more complete car for the money?

and perhaps some forced induction..
Exactly the same choice here. The 320d is no doubt a very, very good car. With fuel prices are getting higher and higher as the day goes by, having a diesel isn't a bad idea at all. It's economical, clean and a lot of torque to pull you off a stand still. The 3-Series itself isn't too big neither too small so it fits nicely and surely drives very well with its balanced chassis.
In Malaysia, the road tax for diesel car is a tad more expensive than cars on petrol but the price of diesel is far cheaper than petrol here. That's why I think owning a diesel car now is a good and smart choice. The rest of the cash left? I'd get a set of good looking wheels and some BMW Performance kits to the car (because I've seen one, and it looked seriously awesome!).
Eh.
How much more force do you need? It's already turbocharged.
Well, Volvo's B234F is very robust motor for a 4-banger, and there have been over 1000bhp dyno results from these motors.. So, you can choose between 155bhp (stock NA) and 1000bhp ( with Mother of All Turbochargers)
With 55k you could get an M-Sport spec 320d, which has an M-style bodykit included. That and some alloys, remove the model designation, and some (idiots) might think you have an M3...
Well, ignoring the fact that I wouldn't spend it if given $55k, if I had to buy a car to keep it, I might buy this:

That's pretty much what I'd start looking for too.
That or a 993 Turbo.
mitchz06a clean and stock r32 gtr (~$20k) and do some tasteful mods to it.
If I wasnt living in Michigan dealing with winter, I would put that money toward a 2002 Ram Air Trans am fully modified, a C6 Corvette or Lotus Exige.
But since I live in Michigan I would probably put the money toward a modified EVO or WRX STI. Or if I could afford it..... An Audi R8 or something else AWD so I could drive it all year.
