Gran Turismo 7 Daily Races: Participation Trophy

The start of a new week greets the start of a new set of Gran Turismo 7 Daily Races, running for the next seven days on their regular 20/30-minute rotations in each slot.

This week’s events stick to the regular format, consisting of a one-make challenge for road cars in Race A, and the core esports categories of Gr.4 and Gr.3 cars in the other two events — returning to the fast, GT3-esque cars in the longer endurance-type race.

Race A this week features one of the madder road cars, not in the sense of being a wild, be-winged hypercar but simply through a recipe which only made sense to Renault: the Clio V6.

As the name somewhat suggests, this was an ordinary, regular Renault Clio fitted with a V6 engine. Not in the front, like its four-pot Renault Sport hot hatch siblings, but in place of the rear seats and powering the rear wheels.

The heavy, three-liter engine and the significant structural work required to make it work meant that despite a power and layout advantage, the Clio V6 wasn’t much quicker to 60mph than its front-wheel drive Clio 172 stablemate. Additionally, the short wheelbase made for some rather tricky handling, especially in the wet.

You’ll be racing this mad miniature monster at the Nurburgring Sprint circuit this week, over a five-lap blast on Comfort Soft tires. That’ll bring out some of the car’s handling traits, but an accident won’t have a huge impact as Driver Rating updates are turned off. Sportsmanship Rating updates remain on, so keep it clean.

Watch out for the False Start Check on the grid too. This will require you to hold the car on the brakes (or handbrake) from the moment the fifth light comes on and until they go off to start the race, or you’ll receive a short, on-the-spot power drop and probably become the center of a big accident.

Race B features the Gr.4 cars this week, for a five-lap race around a circuit we don’t often see in Sport Mode: Kyoto Driving Park Yamagiwa. This is the longer of the two tracks at the Kyoto location, exuding a test facility vibe with a variety of corners that stretch a car’s handling in different ways.

You can select any of the Gr.4 cars, with Racing Medium tires required, and there’s a small number of options to tune your car too. Differential torque and some suspension settings (anti-roll bar, damper compression and expansion, and spring frequency) are available for tweaks before the race, and brake balance is available for on-the-fly adjustment via the multi-function display.

That also applies in the longer Race C, which puts you in your choice of Gr.3 machine. Brands Hatch continues its recent run in Sport Mode, with the longer GP circuit hosting the 13-lap race.

Although the 6x tire wear multiplier — meaning tires wear six times faster than normal — probably won’t impact the useful life of the Racing Medium tires, you’re going to need to take a trip through the pit lane anyway due to the mandatory pit stop.

This requires you to take one full pass through the pits on any racing lap — so anywhere between the end of lap one and the start of lap 13 — and there’s no need to take on fuel or new tires. Should you forget, you’ll pick up a one-minute penalty at the end of the race. Take care of the pit lane entry and exit too, each of which offers a three-second penalty if you even slightly cross the line separating track from pit.

In order to access the Daily Races, you’ll need to unlock Sport Mode, by completing Menu Book 9 (“Championship: Tokyo Highway Parade”) in the GT Cafe single player hub. A PlayStation Plus subscription is required to take part.

With GT7’s Daily Races updating every Monday across the game’s life to date, the next new set should arrive on Monday, June 3.
