After a few weeks of experimentation, the latest Gran Turismo 7 Daily Races available from this morning have reverted to the conventional format, with three new events featuring a one-make road car race and Gr.3 and Gr.4 challenges.
Daily Race A is our one-make, which sees an appearance from the classic Nissan Skyline GT-R in its R34 generation guise. That’s an interesting selection given that the next update for the game, coming this week, looks set to feature a pre-tuned variant of the same car.
The last Skyline to feature the GT-R name before they were split into different models, the R34 GT-R was a technological marvel. It featured that famous 2.6-liter, RB26DETT straight-six — rated at the “Gentleman’s Agreement” 276hp, but likely putting out closer to 320hp — as well as all-wheel drive, and four-wheel steering.
Lower and stiffer than the original car, the V-Spec II form of the GT-R in the game also sported a number of other changes such as a carbon-fiber hood. However, GT7’s example is the rare run-out Nur model — named for the Nurburgring, where the original R34 GT-R set a 7:52 lap — which also includes some of the developments for the N1 racing version of the engine.
You can buy — as a 2002 car it’s in Brand Central in perpetuity — or borrow a car for this week’s event, but be aware that if you use one from your garage you won’t be able to select an engine-swapped vehicle. Standard Sports Hard tires are required.
The race itself is a pretty simple six-lap run at the Short Course version of Watkins Glen. Watch out for the False Start Check on the grid, which will cut your engine torque for a short time should you jump the lights. Also be aware that Driver Rating (DR) updates are turned off for the race again, though Sportsmanship Rating (SR) updates remain turned on.
It’s Gr.4 up next in the Race B sprint, this week running at the Nurburgring GP course. There’s no limit on which Gr.4 car you choose, but unsurprisingly the all-wheel drive cars continue to dominate the leaderboards and — with no boost to tire wear or fuel consumption — should be just as prevalent in the race.
With no special considerations for the event, just get some standard Racing Hard tires strapped on and blast from lights to flag over the five-lap race.
This week’s Race C brings a tactical element by way of two mandatory tire grades and, separately, a forced pit stop.
As is often the case, this is a race for the Gr.3 cars. Again, there’s free choice of any vehicle in the class, and it’s usually pretty balanced but we are seeing a few more examples of the Lancer Evolution Gr.3.
Whatever car you pick you’ll need both Racing Medium and Racing Hard tires for this race, so you’ll need to stop at some point to change them from one grade to the other. The additional mandatory pit stop seems superfluous given this fact…
There’s a relatively low tire wear multiplier at 4x — so the tires wear four times faster than the standard rate — for this 15-lap race at Red Bull Ring, but it’s a benign circuit in terms of tire wear anyway. That should mean that you can run almost the entire race on the Medium grade, if not for the requirement to use the Hards too; it’s likely you’ll only need to run one lap — either lap one or lap 15 — on the low-grip tire.
If you should happen to forget your pit stop you’ll face a one-minute penalty after the race. You should also watch out for the pit lane entry here — the exit is hard to mess up — as crossing any part of the line on your way in will land you a three-second on-track penalty.
Daily Races are the main ranked multiplayer events in GT7. Your Driver Rating (DR) and Sportsmanship Rating (SR) are determined by your performances, updating at the end of each race, and these are used to set your ranking and league for the game’s flagship esports series each season.
In order to access the Daily Races, you’ll need to unlock Sport Mode, by completing Menu Book 9 (“Championship: Tokyo Highway Parade”) in the GT Cafe single player hub. A PlayStation Plus subscription is required to take part.
With GT7’s Daily Races updating every Monday across the game’s life to date, the next new set should arrive on Monday, July 28.
