Gran Turismo 7 Daily Races: Hell or High Water

The regular event pacing continues with a brand-new week seeing a fresh set of Gran Turismo 7 Daily Races available for players all around the world.

We do have the usual event format this week, with a one-make race in Race A and two events for racing categories in the other two, though we’re effectively going without road cars this week as the karts make their return — with a couple of twists.

Eiger Nordwand, still the most recently added circuit to Gran Turismo 7 over a year ago, hosts the Racing Karts for a six-lap race on Sports Soft tires but you’ll need to throw out much of your familiarity with the course as you’ll be racing the reverse variant.

That’s going to mean one single downhill blast for about half the lap length and then a gruelling uphill slog for the rest of it, through the now-ascending hairpin turns. There’s also a pit lane entry to watch out for, as any understeer on the left-handed kink (or a rude lunge up the inside) will skittle you off into the cave of doom.

You’ll need to contend with a False Start Check on the grid this week, so be sure you don’t move between the final light coming on and the race start or you’ll land an inconvenient torque-cut penalty. Notably Driver Updates (DR) seem to be turned back on this week too, so it’s a fully ranked race for a change.

Race B is its regular sprint race affair, comprising a five-lap race around Grand Valley Highway-1 for Gr.3 cars.

There’s little by way of complicating factors here. You can select any of the Gr.3 cars you like, so long as it’s equipped with Racing Hard tires, for this race. As the primary esports category for the game, this class tends to be the best-balanced, and while mid-engined cars are proving a popular choice there’s quite a bit of variety on the leaderboard.

We have a slightly unusual Race C this week, which takes us to the Nurburgring Endurance layout — basically the Nordschleife combined with the short, Sprint circuit — for a race in the Gr.4 cars.

The Gr.4 category isn’t quite so well-balanced, with AWD cars tending to dominate the leaderboards. So it proves here again, with a few exceptions, but that becomes less of a surprise when the possibility of rain enters the picture.

Although not guaranteed, there’s a chance you’ll encounter sufficient surface water to make Racing Intermediate tires necessary. There’s no advantage to trying to endure it either, as there’s a mandatory pit stop in this two-lap race, so keep an eye on the wide-range weather radar before you head in to make the right choice.

You’ll need to make the stop whether it rains or not, and missing the stop earns you a one-minute penalty post-race. The entry and exit are a little tricky too, so be careful not to cross the lines or you’ll also land a three-second, on-track penalty per offense.

Daily Races are the main ranked multiplayer events in Gran Turismo 7. Your Driver Rating (DR) and Sportsmanship Rating (SR) are determined by your performances, updating at the end of each race, and these are used to set your ranking and league for the game’s flagship esports series each season.

In order to access the Daily Races, you’ll need to unlock Sport Mode, by completing Menu Book 9 (“Championship: Tokyo Highway Parade”) in the GT Cafe single player hub. A PlayStation Plus subscription is required to take part.

With GT7’s Daily Races updating every Monday across the game’s life to date, the next new set should arrive on Monday, August 18.
