Gran Turismo 7 Daily Races: Once in a…

The Gran Turismo 7 Daily Races have updated right on cue, bringing new set of three events to start the working week and featuring some of the content added in the 1.63 update.

Recent experiments with regulations continue, as this week sees a fully ranked set of races: your Driver Rating (DR) and Sportsmanship Rating (SR) will be affected in all three of this week’s events. We also have the debut of a circuit layout in any official event, more than three and a half years in!

That comes in Race A, where we’re visiting the Blue Moon Bay Speedway Infield B course for the first time not only in Daily Races but in any curated event; it doesn’t even have a single-player event, and hasn’t been used in a Weekly Challenge Special Event to our recollection. We also think that it’s the last layout variant that hasn’t been raced in any direction in Daily Races or Time Trials, so it’s quite the occasion.

What better way to mark it then, than with a new car added in the recent update? You’ll be using the Hyundai Elantra N, a front-wheel drive performance sedan and the first combustion engined N model added to the game — eight months after the sub-marque first appeared with the 5N EV.

It’s an eight-lap race of this relatively simple, but unfamiliar, circuit and you’ll need Sports Hard tires on your Elantra N to take part. There’s a regular grid start too, so you might want to experiment with traction control settings off the line.

Race B visits the Kyoto Driving Park for this week’s event, running at the longer Yamagiwa circuit. It’s the turn of Gr.4s too, after a couple of weeks in Race C, and the more open nature of the track gives a few options for a competitive race.

Whichever car you pick — and the majority seems to be settling on the Genesis G70 again — you’ll need Sports Hard tires for this five-lap race, which is just long enough to leave you a chance to get one lap’s practice in before the next.

Finally we’ve got a classic current-gen Gran Turismo race in Race C, with the Gr.3 cars heading to Dragon Trail Seaside. You should know largely what to expect here, as it’s been a staple since the beta for GT Sport.

There’s a few regulations to keep in mind though, centering on strategy. You’ll need to use a full set of both the Racing Hard and Racing Medium tire at some point during the race; failing to make the switch from one to the other will earn you a one-minute penalty added to your race time. Somewhat superfluously there’s also a mandatory pit stop in effect…

The means you’ll need to get the most out of the softer, Medium tire without running it so far that it is slower than the new Hards while also using the Hards for as little time as possible. That won’t be easy to judge, with the 5x tire wear multiplier in effect — meaning that tires wear five times faster than standard — but you should be able to run at least half the race on Mediums.

Crossing the solid lines at pit entry/exit will also draw a penalty, of three seconds for each offense and to be served on the circuit at the penalty zones. However, Seaside’s pit lanes are among the easiest in the game to navigate so this shouldn’t be a consideration.

Daily Races are the main ranked multiplayer events in Gran Turismo 7. Your Driver Rating (DR) and Sportsmanship Rating (SR) are determined by your performances, updating at the end of each race, and these are used to set your ranking and league for the game’s flagship esports series each season.

In order to access the Daily Races, you’ll need to unlock Sport Mode, by completing Menu Book 9 (“Championship: Tokyo Highway Parade”) in the GT Cafe single player hub. A PlayStation Plus subscription is required to take part.

With GT7’s Daily Races updating every Monday across the game’s life to date, the next new set should arrive on Monday, October 6.
