Gran Turismo 7 Daily Races: Track Record

Continuing the theme of gifts in the festive period, the latest new set of Gran Turismo 7 Daily Races gives both of the brand-new tracks added in the Spec III update an early workout.

In fact it’s a full suite of F1 circuits up on the rota for this week, as Fuji Speedway joins the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve and Yas Marina Circuit in the three-race line-up.

Race A heads to Canada to mark the debut of CGV, and brings appropriately rapid machinery to the mix in the shape of the Super Formula SF23. We’d have put money on the new F3500-B (as the Espace F1 is up in the current Time Trial event), but here we are.

It’s only a seven-lap run of the new course in the SF23s on Racing Soft tires, and you can pick either the Honda- or Toyota-powered versions for this one, as you lap the first ever F1 circuit built on an artificial island. Make sure you have a button mapped for the “overtake” feature too, as it’s a vital component of these cars.

Of particular interest is the fact that both Driver Rating (DR) and Sportsmanship Rating (SR) updates are switched on for Race A this week. That means it’s a fully ranked race — rare for Race A generally, but more common recently — so you might want to practice in the Circuit Experience before going live on this new track.

Yas Marina’s debut in Daily Races comes in the Race B sprint slot, with a quick five-lap blast in the Gr.4 cars. These are perhaps a little slow for the wide-open spaces of the Tilke-designed, F1-friendly track, but it should provide some close racing on Racing Hard tires.

That said, as the Gr.4 class is not especially well-balanced — the variety of powertrains sees to that — it’s going to be more of a one-make this week than the one-make, two-car Race A. Once again it’s the fictional Citroen GT by Citroen that’s dominating the leaderboards with 80% of the top 100 times.

Over in Race C, with the Gr.3 cars at Fuji International Speedway, we’ve got a bit of a strategic element thrown in thanks to a stepped tire selection.

As usual, you can pick any of the Gr.3 cars for this one, and there’s a variety of competitive options, but you’ll need to be aware that whatever car you use will require Racing Hard and Racing Soft tires. If you borrow a car for the race these will be available, but you might need to spend some money for your own cars.

There’s a 4x tire wear multiplier in effect here, which makes the 15-lap race a bit of a challenge for the Soft grade. You’ll probably want slightly less than a 2:1 split, so nine laps on Hards followed by six laps on Softs at the end when your car is lighter through burned fuel, though tire-whisperers may disagree.

Failing to use both tire grades attracts a one-minute penalty on top of your race time, and do watch out for the pit entry and exit which will garnish you a three-second penalty that you must serve out on track if you cross either solid white line between pit and circuit.

Daily Races are the main ranked multiplayer events in Gran Turismo 7. Your Driver Rating (DR) and Sportsmanship Rating (SR) are determined by your performances, updating at the end of each race, and these are used to set your ranking and league for the game’s flagship esports series each season.

In order to access the Daily Races, you’ll need to unlock Sport Mode, by completing Menu Book 9 (“Championship: Tokyo Highway Parade”) in the GT Cafe single player hub. A PlayStation Plus subscription is required to take part.

With GT7’s Daily Races updating every Monday across the game’s life to date, the next new set should arrive on Monday, December 15.
