The relentless pace of Daily Races continues with a fresh set of three events this morning to tide players over during what we expect to be a high-participation Christmas week — and it’s a full set of racing cars and in fully ranked events too.
It’s an asphalt rally in Race A this week, as you’ve got free choice of vehicle from the Gr.B category stacked with some classic rally cars and a variety of fictional models made to fit into the class, sporting wild wings, elevated ride height, and rather a lot of power.
You’ll not be troubling the suspension too much — okay, maybe the compression side of it — as you’ll be heading to race around California’s Laguna Seca circuit for a five-lap race. Racing Hard tires are required for this one so there’ll be a bit of slipping and sliding, especially through the infamous Corkscrew.
Unusually you’ll be able to mitigate this a little bit, but only a smidge, as the variable center differential is unlocked for adjustment. You can do this on the fly through the Multi-Function Display (MFD) feature or with the yellow dial if you use an official GT Sport/GT7 wheel.
As noted above, both Driver Rating (DR) and Sportsmanship Rating (SR) updates are turned back on again this week, so Race A is fully ranked for a change. Laguna Seca is not a track with many obvious, clean overtaking spots, so take care with these slippery machines not to damage your SR making your way up the ranks.
Despite the broad range of cars in the class, it looks like this week’s dominant forces are the two fictional Mitsubishi Lancer and Subaru Impreza WRX Gr.B cars. Don’t mix that latter one up with the real thing, as it’s well down on power even under class Balance of Performance.
We have the usual Gr.4/Gr.3 lineup in the other two spots, and this week’s Race B is where you’ll be racing the road car-based Gr.4 machinery.
It’s a five-lap sprint race around the Mount Panorama, and while it’s the usual open selection we’ve been seeing one car coming to the fore in this notoriously difficult to balance category.
Of course you don’t have to pick the Genesis G70, but you’ll probably be left for dead going up the hill and there’s a reason 97% of the Top 100 leaderboard is all in this one car. Whatever you pick you’ll need the standard Racing Hard tires fitted.
That leaves the longer Race C with the Gr.3 cars, and there’s something of a strategy consideration here even if the regulations don’t force it as they usually do.
It’s an 11-lap race around the reverse layout of the Grand Valley Highway 1 course, which basically makes the tight chicane the first real braking zone after the fast left through the tunnel and the fast right over the Big Sur bridge.
You’ll be required to use Racing Soft tires for this one, and with a 3x tire wear multiplier it looks like it’s going to be a bit stressful — especially on the front-right tire — trying to make the race distance without stopping. There’s no mandatory stop though, so it is an option.
Stopping takes quite a bit of time though, and while you’ll lose time on the final three-to-four laps with chronic understeer if you don’t we don’t reckon it’ll offset the pit loss time (especially if you land a three-second penalty for crossing pit entry/exit lines). Put on your best tire whispering boots, lift-and-coast, and hope you can get to the end, we think.
Daily Races are the main ranked multiplayer events in Gran Turismo 7. Your Driver Rating (DR) and Sportsmanship Rating (SR) are determined by your performances, updating at the end of each race, and these are used to set your ranking and league for the game’s flagship esports series each season.
In order to access the Daily Races, you’ll need to unlock Sport Mode, by completing Menu Book 9 (“Championship: Tokyo Highway Parade”) in the GT Cafe single player hub. A PlayStation Plus subscription is required to take part.
With GT7’s Daily Races updating every Monday across the game’s life to date, the next new set should arrive on Monday, December 29.
