Gran Turismo 7 Daily Races: That’s the Spirit

A trio of real-world circuits awaits us in the brand-new set of Gran Turismo 7 Daily Races, beginning today and running for the next week.

We’ve got a familiar look to the races, comprised as they are of a one-make road car race in the first slot and two race-car category events in the other two although they are switched about from the usual way round.

This week’s Race A stars the MX-5 that’s not an MX-5, as the Mazda Spirit Racing Roadster 12R takes to the track — and yes, that’s a second week in a row with a Mazda road car. No, we’re not complaining about that one!

It’s a bit of an unusual one to show off the 12R’s strengths, as you’ll be tackling the Daytona Road Course (at least it isn’t the oval) which features a lot of high-speed sections for the lightweight, track-focused, 200hp Roadster. Something a bit twistier might have worked better, even on the required Sports Hard tires, but there is at least a technical infield section for you to attempt to break the slipstream (or stay on it).

The race takes place over four laps of the circuit, and — for a second week in a row — both Driver Rating (DR) and Sportsmanship Rating (SR) are turned on for the race. That again makes it a good chance to build your ratings ahead of the start of the official GTWS online qualifiers this week.

For Race B this week it’s the turn of the Gr.3 cars as you go to the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya for a five-lap sprint. It’s another outing for the GP circuit’s “No Chicane” variant, which skips out the final RACC Chicane for a higher-speed entry to the final straight.

Gr.3 remains the best-balanced of the various racing categories so there’s plenty of options for a decent result on the required Racing Medium tires this week. It’s a straightforward shootout, and getting that last corner right will be vital.

Race C brings us back to the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve, for only the second time it was introduced and the first time it’s been in the Race C slot — but it’s with the rather less balanced Gr.4 cars.

Generally this results in one particular car type of the rather varied category, if not one specific car, coming to the fore and this week that seems to be the all-wheel drive cars. The Alfa Romeo 155 is becoming a favorite, but others are also viable.

Oddly there’s no tactical element to this race at all this week. It’s simply a ten-lap race on Racing Hard tires, with no mandatory stop, no tire-type changes, no weather (with the Americas remaining rain-free in GT7) or anything to spice up the action. Even the tire wear and fuel consumption multipliers are set to default values.

The key then is to get a good qualifying time, escape any turn one carnage, and stretch your legs while all erupts behind you to get a decent finish this week.

Daily Races are the main ranked multiplayer events in Gran Turismo 7. Your Driver Rating (DR) and Sportsmanship Rating (SR) are determined by your performances, updating at the end of each race, and these are used to set your ranking and league for the game’s flagship esports series each season.

In order to access the Daily Races, you’ll need to unlock Sport Mode, by completing Menu Book 9 (“Championship: Tokyo Highway Parade”) in the GT Cafe single player hub. A PlayStation Plus subscription is required to take part.

With GT7’s Daily Races updating every Monday across the game’s life to date, the next new set should arrive on Monday, January 19.
