Gran Turismo 7 Daily Races: Groundhog Daytona

A brand-new set of Gran Turismo 7 Daily Races is available from this morning, running across the next seven days, although you’ll be forgiven for thinking there’s something a little familiar about it.

That’s because, for a second week in a row and the third successive competitive online event in a row, we’ll be taking a trip to the coast of Florida for a visit to the Daytona location and its Road Course.

Although last week’s Daytona event was in Race A, it’s Race C for the circuit this week and a considerably higher-powered challenge at that. You’ll be stepping up from the politely powered Mazda Spirit Racing 12R into your choice of Gr.1 car.

That might also sound familiar because it is, in fact, almost exactly the same as the current Time Trial event, just in race form and on slightly sturdier tires with the added consideration of tire degradation. Of course we do have the real-world 24 Hours of Daytona coming up this weekend, so these loosely associated events are not much surprise.

Also of little surprise is that the car of choice for the leaderboard is the same as the one for the time trial, with the Peugeot L750R Hybrid — one of the least Vision GT-like of all of the Vision GT concepts — leading the way. However what works for one-lap pace and what works in a race where you have a six-times standard tire wear multiplier are not necessarily the same thing.

This 15-lap race has no pit stop requirement, but making a no-stopper work when your Racing Medium tires are effectively traveling 90 laps of a high-speed banked oval and a tight infield with plenty of hard stops will be tricky.

Our two other races this week see the usual one-make road car event in Race A and the return of a very rarely used circuit in the shape of Blue Moon Bay’s Infield A for Race B, and this time it’s in the reverse direction.

It’s the turn of the Gr.4 cars here, and that relatively unbalanced lineup means that one car usually pops to the top of the pile pretty early on. Once again, after several similar recent events, that’s the Citroen GT by Citroen (ironically the most Vision GT-like non-Vision GT).

The race itself is straightforward enough, comprising a nine-lap sprint around this road course-variant of the regular oval on Racing Hard tires. There’s plenty of action flashpoints too, so make sure your radar is turned on…

Finally we have Race A, which once again gives us a fully ranked race with Driver and Sportsmanship Rating updates left on for the event to continue a recent streak.

It’s the shortest layout of the Sardegna Road Track up for us this week, giving another nine-lap race to account for the brisk nature of the C course. And what better to suit this narrow route with little opportunity to go full throttle than a 440hp Italian GT?

Yes, you’ll be driving the recursively named Maserati Gran Turismo S for this one, on Sports Medium tires to provide a little extra grip than standard. It does at least make a great noise, and at least you’ve got an Italian car on this Italian course. Note that there’s a Grid Start for this one, but it’s of the regular type so get that throttle pinned.

Daily Races are the main ranked multiplayer events in Gran Turismo 7. Your Driver Rating (DR) and Sportsmanship Rating (SR) are determined by your performances, updating at the end of each race, and these are used to set your ranking and league for the game’s flagship esports series each season.

In order to access the Daily Races, you’ll need to unlock Sport Mode, by completing Menu Book 9 (“Championship: Tokyo Highway Parade”) in the GT Cafe single player hub. A PlayStation Plus subscription is required to take part.

With GT7’s Daily Races updating every Monday across the game’s life to date, the next new set should arrive on Monday, January 26.
