Gran Turismo 7 Time Trial: Climb Evo Mountain

A brand new Gran Turismo 7 Online Time Trial is now available, putting players into a classic piece of Gran Turismo’s history on a recently rejuvenated circuit.

This latest event brings back road car action, with the two-week time trial putting you into the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution III GSR ’95.

As usual you can use your own garage car — with your choice of livery, but with tuning reset — or borrow one for the event if you don’t own one yet. We’re not saying you have to go for stock Dandelion Yellow but you kind of do.

Either way it’ll need to be fitted with Comfort Soft tires for the event, which tasks you with setting the fastest time you can around the Eiger Nordwand course. This GT:HD-era circuit is the most recent location addition to GT7, coming in July 2024 (yes really), and featured only a very mild reworking compared to some other returnees from older titles.

The early flurry of pace-setters have brought the record down to a 1:14.626, which means you’ll need to set a 1:16.864 for gold right now. Beware though that this is a dynamic target, and only the final world record matters; we can see that dropping a few tenths over the next 14 days, so figure on a 1:16.4 or better being required for the gold rewards.

World Series regulars have got hold of the Super Formula time trial, and as a result the record has dropped a remarkable amount. We figured on a mid-1:34, but the current top time is a 1:34.303 and, while it’s set by time trial specialist Kaj de Bruin, there could be more to come.

That said, we don’t think there’s a lot more left, given that the top ten is covered by 0.2s. It’s not likely that we’ll see 1:34.0, and even 1:34.1 is an outside bet. Figure on a 1:34.2 and change, requiring close to a flat-1:37 to keep a hold on gold.

In order to access the Online Time Trials, you’ll need to unlock Sport Mode, by completing Menu Book 9 (“Championship: Tokyo Highway Parade”) in the GT Cafe single player hub. As it’s just you against the clock and not a direct, head-to-head multiplayer event, PlayStation Plus is not required.

You’ll usually need to be within 3% of the fastest time globally once the event finishes in order to secure “gold” status and a 2m credit bonus prize. There’s smaller prizes of one million for being within 5%, and 250,000cr for bronze at 10% off.

The events update every Thursday, with each individual challenge usually remaining available for two weeks and the oldest of the two events being replaced each week. You can look forward to the next new Time Trial arriving at 0700 UTC on Thursday March 20.
