GT Sport Shutdown, GT7 Update, Sony’s Afeela EV, and More: The GTPlanet Show January 2024

As GTPlanet moves into its 24th year — yes, we’ve really been around that long — we’re launching our first monthly sim-racing show on our YouTube channel.

Each month Jordan, Andrew, and Chaz will be looking over the most interesting and significant news stories in the sim-racing sphere, including topics covered on the GTPlanet forums, and giving our own thoughts and views.

January 2024 has been a busy month, so we had quite a fair bit to cram into the first hour. That of course included the rare occasion of a Gran Turismo game reaching the end of its life as GT Sport was taken offline — along with an update to make it playable without a server connection.

GT7, approaching its own second anniversary, also saw a content update during the month which it’s fair to say wasn’t entirely well-received when it was announced with two of the three slots taken up by the divisive Vision GTs and the other a 63hp kei truck.

We’ve been taking a look at the reaction as players have got to grips (or otherwise in one case) with the two cars most of us could enjoy — and discussing the $4,600 early access buy-in for the other.

There’s a glimpse into GT7’s future too, with the Sony-created “Afeela” electric vehicle penciled in for an update some time in 2024 ahead of its arrival on the roads of the real world.

It’s been an interesting month for Forza Motorsport fans too, as Turn 10 announced that the Nurburgring Nordschleife would be coming to the title sooner than expected, during February 2024. The game has been peppered with new circuits since launch, even if the addition of Daytona was lightly ribbed by the Rolex 24’s real-world commentators!

We touch on more real motorsport too as Gran Turismo’s “maestro”, Sir Lewis Hamilton, announced a shock switch from his Mercedes team of the past 11 seasons to — after one last year in 2024 — Ferrari.

You can look forward to a new show each month as we recap the things that have caught our eye during the preceding four and a bit weeks, with February already shaping up to be just as intriguing.
