Logitech G29: First Video & Hands-On Impressions

There’s been a lot of interest and debate over the new Logitech G29 steering wheel that was formally unveiled a few weeks ago, but not much in the way of hands-on impressions.

Fortunately, InsideSimRacing’s Darin Gangi got to try out the new hardware at E3 last week, and shared his thoughts in a new video. As expected, he found the wheel very similar in performance and feel to the older G27, with the primary difference or improvement coming in the form of a progressive feeling in the supplied brake pedal.

You can pre-order the Logitech G29 on Amazon for $399.99 USD. As always, stop by our Sim Racing Hardware forum for more discussion and analysis!

Interesting how he doesn’t make a single mention to any GT products. Weren’t the dials from the original DFGT produced just for GT? Maybe the G29 has the future of GT7 in mind.

Any body tried these M4 or F1 adapters that supposidly allow our G27’s or DFGT wheels work on the PS4, I’ve seen some youtube clips but I reckon they’re no good.

I use the Cronomax one but its a PITA. You have to piggy-back it from a computer to the PS4. And to top it off, the drivers for the PC are not completely compatible with the Cronomax software so there’s a huge deadspot off center to one side and in both pedals. Without the drivers installed on the PC there’s only a deadspot off center to the right on the wheel. The biggest turn off aside from needing to run the PC and PS4 at the same time is you have to learn a little game coding to get it up and running. The lack of force feedback isn’t too bad because there is still centering feedback but its not ideal.

“The wheel was recognized as a G27 in the Project Cars menu, so I’m assuming they’re using the G27 drivers”….lol.

Interesting video, not sure why he said the lockout chip was a farce when he literally stated that none of the unlicensed wheels work NATIVELY with the PS4. If the PS buttons do nothing when not in the game then the wheel obviously is not being recognized by the OS of the system. Facepalm. Logitech overpriced these wheels but they decided to build licensed for use on respective systems instead of spotty compatibility. I would love for my G25 to work but only Sony can give Logitech the data needed to let the older wheels work natively with P4, pretty sure that it’s up to Logitech to request it, didn’t Thrustmaster get the TRS 500 wheel to run on PS4 due to talking with Sony about it.
Case and point if the wheel doesn’t work outside of the game on the console, it’s not natively supported and is basically supported in game due to provision made by a combination of the developer of the game and the peripheral maker. Logitech could have added support for their legacy devices but it would be just as it is with other non native peripherals. Blame Logitech for not seeking out every opportunity to get their older devices running, those devices and users don’t just vanish because Logitech took a sabbatical. I like Logitech durability but I don’t like this greed fueled way of displacing owners of perfectly working peripherals just to sell some new stuff.

Yes the G27 will work on ps4 except no feedback so pretty pointless. i doubt the 29 works on PS2. But it might work without feedback

I got to try the wheel out at E3 as well. Immediately I was forced to get used to the odd button layout of the wheel. The G27 had a more natural layout where your thumbs could easily press buttons mid-turn. I found that was not the case with this wheel. Other than that, it had a smoother feel to it, and was overall of better quality.

The main issue I took from the wheel is that the shifter is sold separately, and I asked a representative there if the one from the G27 would be compatible and their exact words were, “it shouldn’t be.”

My overall impression was that if you really wanted a new wheel and your G27 was dead, this might be good to get, but personally, I would rather spend the money on a more “elite” wheel that promises more accuracy and a better racing sensation.
