Hourly Updates by Wurks.ca

10:00 AM (EST) – 11:00 AM (EST)

After a good start teams have begun finding their rythm. Team FGT unfortunately had to retire because of mecanical failure (to many accidents). Here is the top 3 after the first hour of the race:

      1. Team RB with the fastest lap (8.51.960)
      2. Team TE
      3. Team GHH

All teams are now looking for the best strategy to apply, let’s see what is going to happen next!

 11:00 AM (EST) – 12:00 PM (EST)
2 hours have already passed… The 6 teams are battleing it out, but Team RB are now nearly 2 minutes ahead, followed by GHH, Team TE, SRO, FBI and NMM.

12:00 PM (EST) – 1:00 PM (EST)
Teams have held their positions as Team RB starts laping the last 2 cars.
Top 3 are still Team RB, GHH and TE.

1:00 PM (EST) – 2:00 PM (EST)
Seeing the gap grow wider, NMM are now 3 laps behind. SRO and FBI have been lapped by Team RB who are still in first place.  SRO have switched places with FBI and have moved up to 5th place.

2:00 PM (EST) – 3:00 PM (EST)
As Team RB are increasing the gap by frequetly running under 8:50.000, Team FBI and SRO are fighting for the 4th place. Team RB have now an advance of 4 laps over the team in the last position. GHH is holding up fairly well by being only 4 mins behind the leader after 5 hours of racing.

3:00 PM (EST) – 4:00 PM (EST)
Every team seem in their rightful spot exept for Team FBI and SRO that are still fighting each other… GHH and Team Enduro seem to begin facing fatigue as they’ve had some losses of control… Let’s see if the green hell will have the upper hand.

4:00 PM (EST) – 5:00 PM (EST)
Positions have started to stabilize as SRO struggle to keep on pace with FBI. On lap 36 NMM was forced to abandon due to connection problems. 5 cars are still in the race after a grueling 7 hours. Errors are multipliying as the task is getting more and more exhausting.

5:00 PM (EST) – 6:00 PM (EST)
The fight is still on as SRO managed to catch Team FBI and all of a sudden all the cars have grouped up in the same area of the track. Team FBI obtained a 3 minute penalty for blocking faster cars. Lots of scratches and aggressive racing lines going on. SRO slipped into 4th as Team FBI incurred their penalty.

 6:00 PM (EST) – 7:00PM (EST)
The Green Hell as taken yet another team: Team FBI left the race shortly after their penalty. According to them they were not sufficiantly prepared and trained. That’s whats a 24 hour race is all about. Underestimate the Ring and it will bite you… Night is half completed.

 7:00 PM (EST) – 8:00 PM (EST)
As the 4 ace teams are battleing it out, the first 10 hours of the race have been completed.

1) Ring Bandits: leader

2) Green Hell Heathens: 1 lap behind

3) Team Enduro: 2 laps behind

4) Shifted Racing Online: 3 laps behind

Pretty close for a 10 hour race!!! This is looking like a real 24 hour race. It happens more often than not, that 3-4 cars in the same class end up fighting.

8:00 PM (EST) – 9:00 PM (EST)
All teams have kept their positions even though some have made mistakes. Are some drivers getting tired? RB however have kept their time under the 9:00.0 mark most of the time!!

9:00 PM (EST) – 10:00 PM (EST)
The gap between GHH and TE has tightened up, but all teams have kept the same positions for the moment. By the way, we’ve passed the races halfway mark!!!

10:00 PM (EST) – 11:00 PM (EST)
Now that we are entering the second half of the race, more and more mistakes are made. Can the teams keep it up? Hours of sleep are scarce and drivers tend to distract more easely.

 11:00 PM (EST) – 12:00 PM (EST)
The sun is rising on the circuit… But it seems like the top dogs aren’t affected by the lack of sleep. RB now have 5 laps over SRO in 4th and 2 laps over GHH in 2nd.

12:00 PM (EST) – 1:00 AM (EST)
9 hours to go… Ring Bandits are lighting up the circuit with an impressive lap tim of 8:36.644. GHH and TE are fighting for 2nd place with only 11 mins between them after 15 hours.

1:00 AM (EST) – 2:00 AM (EST)
The bright sun is now high in the sky! GHH reinforcements have arrived. Their 3rd driver only now has literally made it on site as he was on a plane… as the pilot of course.

 2:00 AM (EST) – 6:00 AM (EST)
Problems have arose: Disconnection of both team RB (1st) and Team RE (3rd). As those teams spent a lot of time racing, and with both team SRO and GHH agreement, Race Control has ordered a full course yellow and the race restarted. However the problem lasted longer for Team RE, causing them to spend ‘many minutes in pits’ to sort out their connection that they fell in 4 th place with 4 laps behind SRO. As things unfold, it is looking more and more like the real race.

 6:00 AM (EST) – 7:00 AM (EST)
Where you thinking that after 20 hours of racing it would get boring? Well, as teams have been regrouped by yellow flags (although seperated by many laps), cars and drivers are fighting to get ahead and clear of their opponents! Still standing are: RB 1st, GHH 2nd, SRO 3rd and TE 4th.

 7:00 AM (EST) – 8:00 AM (EST)
Things are going back to where they were hours ago. TE is closing the gap with SRO. Will it be ‘too little too late’? Ring Bandits continue setting destructive lap times with a stunning 8:32.052 after 22 hours!!

8:00 AM (EST) – 9:00 AM (EST)
Almost there and the teams are still running with great pace. SRO fastest lap at the 23 hr mark : 8:48.306.

 9:00 AM (EST) – 10:00 AM (EST)
Have the 4 Teams crossed the finish line? Not as expected. At 23hrs and 57 mins into the race another connection problem occurs and SRO and Race control have been kicked out. Pulling out the yellow flag once again would surely move us over the 24hr duration, so the Checkered Flag is waived over the noted positions and the race is complete.

Congratulations to all of the teams who finished, for their courage and perseverance. This was an amazing and Epic race.

Final ranking

Is there a chance of getting the highlights of the race? Did somebody saved all that stuff?
Unfortunately I (and presumably a lot more members) missed the stream.

    1. Heathenpride

I have the last 40 laps I think, the race was yellow flagged at 115 laps but I missed that replay, too much excitement going on!

Did any of the teams get the first 115 laps replay?

  2. advent

Missed the stream unfortunately… But enjoyed reading the hourly updates above… Well done to all that finished!!!… very impressive!

  3. Demplar

When you want to organise something like a 24hrs race, you don’t start with a full blown organisation. You have to work your way trough…live an learn. Gran Tourismo, Playstation, Sony, Porsche, IBM… All the great projects… they’ve all started with humble starts…sure there was flaws and weeknesses… We would love peoples who think they can do better either help us or start a better one… but until then we will keep on upgrading what we’ve put together…

Thanks to GTplanet, understanding that nothing is perfect on the first time…

  4. Lambob

Thanks to Wurks.ca for their ambition, and congrats to all participants, and winners. I hope this makes it into GT5 expansion / GT6. Online event creator. Kaz, this is your next project in case you aren’t working on it already!

    4:00 PM (EST) – 5:00 PM (EST)
… was forced to abandon due to connection problems…

/Honey, turn that damn TV OFF, we’ll be late for supper!!

  5. tehPete

So for the next one – livestreams of every participating team HQ, 10 teams per race allowing for 1 RC and 1 HD spectator capper (12 lobby total, unless PD fix the network code between now and then), testing beforehand to make sure everyones connections can cope with the load without lagging, and MOAR BEERAMIDS!

Thanks to Wurks for arranging the event and holding it together till the last, and thanks to the teams and the other spectators for making it such an enjoyable event despite the issues! Shame more didn’t finish, but in some cases that was probably in the best interests of the race. Special shout to RB and GHH for keeping it friendly and mature throughout (well, mature enough!), & the Canadians for not dropping out ;P Model teams for the next 24hr event; here’s hoping that PD can help make it a smoother one :)

    Did someone say la Sarthe..?

  6. Gadget334

I picked up the feed a couple of hours in. I would have loved to participate but only discovered this website, and news of the event a few days ago, so THIS time could only spectate.

I followed the race on and off via the leaderboard on GTPlanet and the videostream from the Ring Bandits. It was strangely addictive, in the same way that Big Brother can be :) Well done to WURKs for attempting something so ambitious. I’m sure lessons were learned on how to do it better next time, but hey, if you don’t try then nothing happens. Please keep me informed as to the next events because as long as i’m available, I’ll be in!

Finally, big congrats to Aeron, Ryan and Stewart of Ring Bandits for a great drive, professional organisation, and a very entertaining stream and live chat throughout. I enjoyed the banter (I was ‘Steve_Rogers’ in the chat room), and sportsmanship from those guys. Hope to see you ‘on the track’ soon

  7. SAMIboarder

I’m happy to see the event go nearly the full distance. Just 3 minutes short is great. Congratulations to team RB on the dominant performance.

Now as far as spectating on these races, I think they could be much more interesting to watch if we knew more about the teams. Maybe some team profiles could be released in the news section one or two weeks prior to the race? Just knowing some basics like where a team is from and what they are racing could help us get interested I think. Let you root for the home team and what not. Unless I missed something like this in the forums? Obviously people want to watch; I saw over 200 people trying to check the stream each time I tried. Also getting the stream to work better would be nice, but I have no ideas on that one.

    1. The Urban Saint

Wurks ran all the bios off the actual site for the 24 hr of GT Nurb site, it was actually pretty entertaining.

    1. Demplar

Not sure…FBI left (Their own word) : Because of lack of preparation with only 2 drivers….si Stig007 are you a member of FBI? And if so… Well is this do to your 3 mins penalty for not respecting races rules…that would explain the comment.

  8. ch3ng

Thumps up for the current Teams on track :)

Sadly GT5 Abs the current consoles arent Capable of 64 Cars :(
Would be alot more fun i think

    1. ch3ng

Sry have to correct some Things…

Sadly GT5 and the current console arent Capable of doing 64 Cars on Track. Would be a Lot more Fun :)

  9. Lambofanghini

Nothing but good can come out of attempting this type of event. In a few years or less, live streaming in GT is going to look awesome, and blow us all away. Glad they tried it as it is the only way to truly torture test the online capability and see in full the issues that we all complain about. We can already see the all to familiar lag when the server is bogged down with too many viewers, we have no sound and the quality is….no comment,:( but it is a work in progress. Makes me excited about what this will look like in the near future of GT5 and GT6. Wait till all the bugs and kinks get worked out. Kudos, GT5 and WURKS. :)

  10. tadlock

I think the negative comments are inappropriate and unwarranted.

I congratulate works.ca and all the teams that started the event for their effort. At the time of my post, the teams have been at it for 8+ hrs and it sounds like there is competitive racing and a little paint being traded.

I’m sure there will be lessons learned that will be used to improve the racing in the next event and improve the live stream and, who knows, maybe improve GT5 or GT6.

Again, I applaud Works.ca and all teams that started the race for the effort.

Consider this before anyone posts another negative comment: Who is racing? and Who is typing on their computer/smart phone?

    1. HKS racer

And who is streaming with a cheap webcam?
You don’t need to flame people if they tell you the streaming sucks.
You need to find a better camera instead.

    2. Demplar

TO HKS racer : By critisising like that, you are discouraging people to try to organise free online racing. I am curious to know how many event have you organised? or you are just the type of player that give nothing to the community but critics…

    1. Slurpee

If you’re interested in that stuff hang around Daytona rooms and look for Twuckdriver’s rooms and find out when he’s doing a 500, he does several a week, you just need to qualify into it. We restrict the HP to 720 to make it more realistic, but still fast.

    2. R1SHORT

I meant real Daytona 500 race data or practice laps like that david coulthard challenge a while back with the mercedes

  11. Rynogtr23

I am one of those who feel that gran turismo needs a penalty system for people who quit races voluntarily. It would go like this,if a racer quits 3 online races in a row within a 24 hour period, no matter the intervals between them, they get banned from any online racing for a period of up to 4 hours.Once the 4 hours are up then they can resume online racing.Even if you quit a race and still stay in the online lounge this ban should still apply. There should also be provisions for racers who have been disconnected against their will not to be confused with racers who quit an online race voluntarily.

    1. Stig007

Some of the teams that quit during the race retired, because they felt the car needed work or that it lacked structure

    2. Demplar

To Stig007: Reallly? who’s fault is it when you haven’t taken the race seriously. 4 other teams did and maybe more (disconnected). Strange how FBI left just after a penalty… It’s not about winning but more about finishing the 24 hours. FYI only one team quit: FBI. If I do remember your (Well is it that obvious?) team info are not even completed on wurk.ca. They’ve spent time preparing the web site and all, sending you e-mails to have your info that you have barely sent. Be sure that next event you won’t pass the qualification round.

    3. recca

on behalf of team enduro i second what you said Demplar…we had a terrible connection problem around 4-5am..we got disconnected, came back in, disconnected again, tried to come back in but it took a little to long and just when we got into the lobby, race was about to start..the map was still loading as teh time ticked down..unfortunately we could not make it and surprisingly it never disconnected from that point on again…someone other team got disconnected and so they had yellow flag for that team as well. They allowed us to join back in but that was 45mins or so later and we are now behind 3rd place by 4 laps…at that point it was a matter of getting 3rd anymore because i knew realistically it wasn’t going to happen but i still told the rest of my team to just drive their best and let’s finish what we started…i think it was safe to say that we had 3rd place in the bag, despite losing our position to network issues we were determined to finish anyways, all in the spirit of motorsport racing

  12. Rynogtr23

In typical Gran Turismo fashion, people quit because they suck.I dont know why they continue to race if they can’t,go buy another game losers!!

  13. ch3ng

Thie event Reminds me what i want for GT6 on PS4….

Massiv Public viewing by onlinematches. Nö Stream necessary anymore

Up to 64 Cars on Track (like pCARS does)

Livery Editor to Get a Team design (like Forza 4, pCARS)

Multiple classes and Team Mode (like Forza Does and pCARS is planing.

    1. Snaeper

pCARS looks like it’ll be a PC title, so of course they’ll get away with a lot more. It also looks similar to iRacing which also allows custom liveries and many cars on the tracks.

Gran Turismo needs to cater to the general gaming crowd because they’re using a console that is aimed at that crowd. The Hardware is not nearly as advanced as what you can do with some PC’s, so they’re limited.

I would also like to correct you by saying the first Gran Turismo title on PS4, as there is a good chance that another GT title could be released on the PS3, but that’s another discussion entirely.

  14. beemwen

It’s not the racers fault. This event was extremely amateurish, and bad. Arranged by people who dont have a clue of what they are doing…

  15. Snaeper

I had alarm bells going off in my head when I read up the practice reports from December. Only three teams showed up and they couldn’t even drive like professionals. They all ran off the track at some point and drove like a bunch of rookies.

I wake up to find a poor quality stream with only 6 teams?!?! There was some seriously poor planning going on here, but here’s to hoping that they can try the event again and make it better… assuming this doesn’t end up being such a failure that nobody attempts to try.

The least they could’ve done is let drivers actually complete all 170 laps so they could get the insane amount of credits they’ll no doubt earn after doing that many circuits of the Nurb.

Overall, this first event was a big let down. I recommend doing some shorter enduros in the future instead of diving head first into the deep end of the pool without knowing how to swim.

Doing the shorter events would’ve strengthened rules, teams and built huge amounts of interest. Run some 5-6 hour enduros and then make the decision on doing a 24 hour blast that requires the commitment of multiple people. It’s obvious with only 6 teams that there was not enough of a commitment here.

    1. HKS racer

Problem is, it’s been given far too importance to a “team” of unprofessional organizers, in some way is also gtplanet fault.
In other hand, I kind of understand them, they gave people a chance.

Dear gtp next time check the credibility of the people you are gonna promote, or organize an official gtplanet event with professional organizers you know you can trust.

    2. ChaosStar79

Promoting it in the way that GTP did, brought a lot of people into the thread and discussion that really had no business being there. If it had been kept more low-key, better teams probably would have signed up and competed. Also, the ‘first come, first serve’ style sign up for teams, instead of screening or qualifying, surely did not do any favors towards making a quality event. Had this been an event that spread between the serious GT5 members, instead of being plastered on FB, I think it would have turned out much better. Hopefully far more effort will be put into organizing any future races of this type.

    3. Snaeper

All of this goes back to my point of them doing shorter events first. I commend wurks.ca for their efforts, as surely they’ve done more than anyone else, but they needed to work up to a 24 hour event, rather than start with the 24 hour event.

  16. Clipless72

that is a shame that the teams are dropping off. i wanted to enter a team that wouldn’t have dropped out. I am hoping there are more of these coming up.

  17. scoddee

4 teams hanging in there. RB should sandbag and help keep interest up. 2 cars on screen, or should I say 1 car (RB has bumper cam i think) would be a nice change.

  18. xNeroZero

This race is a joke. 6 people 24 hours? Doubt this race will last 24 hours before all but one of the teams pull out.

  19. Acan

a job badly done, their website is awesome, but the live streaming is like…. i dont know what to say. They didnt prepare enough!!! and makes gtp look bad. what a shame.

  20. Lekkeri

My god. Let LukaX23 do the streaming. wurks stream is horrible. This is a fail, a grand fail. Lot of work done to organize this kind of race and then a failure to stream it, good job wurks…..NOT.

  21. cutemarilu

It would be really funny if a lag crash causes the race to freeze and the people with a stable connection catch up to the leaders…. Oh I love the psn

  22. o9lifted

Race starts now! too bad I can only see a picture changing from time to time due to bad internetconnection :/ good luck to all participants ;)

  23. Projectoutlaw

I guess a team lagging out of the server might make the race more interesting and realistic. It would be like simulating a motor blowing up and the team getting out.

  24. ZeGermanBastorD

Let’s see if the camera angles are better as in the Nürburgring 24h ’11 race. :D

Very surprising, no German, Japanese or Russian team. lol

  25. Projectoutlaw

As cool as this race sounds I just don’t think the servers are strong enough to take it. I just have a feeling the whole thing is going to black screen after 2 hours or something.

  26. solracarreug

im going to laugh so hard when someone at 23:00 has a connection crash or some bug make the car stop or something xD, i hope this race isnt a failure but i think its high probability some of the guys dont get to the end of the race

    1. ZeGermanBastorD

Yea, when they went out of Red Bull & fall asleep behind the wheel. lol

I hope they are aware that nearly every provider is doing every 24hr an auto reconnect. Don’t know if you can avoid an PSN disconnect when you put your PS3 into a DMZ?

  27. marktyper

OOOOOHHHHHH Geeezzzzz damn it… I wish I could participate in this one but only 12 teams could participate PLUS I care more about my eyesight yeknow?
I’m a real enthusiast but I respect these participants too!

  28. PIGBOY

So much real motorsport happening this weekend ill try to have a sqiuzz, bathurst 12 hour the real race is on also featuring F458’s,R8LMS,SLS AMG,lotus elise and more, even a datsun 120y in the support races…omg, what next,a shwimminwagun

  29. Snaeper

It’s a shame so many of the teams chose to run the same car as it would’ve been nice to watch a number of different cars compete against each other with the teams using the strengths and weaknesses of their choice to make their decision. Watching several Cusco Subaru’s run around the track might get boring.

    But that’s just me.

    1. GT HP Nut

It’s good that they are using proper cars, unlike the AI using LMPs in GT5. I’m still figuring what to use for that race.

  30. AnPrionsaBeag

This promises great fun! On a side note, could you use Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) along with EST? GTP has a worldwide audience and it’d make things much easier for the rest of us. Thanks.
