Toyota’s 24-Hour GT5 Challenge: Impressions from AUS Motor Show [UPDATES]

Editors from Kotaku Australia were invited to participate in Toyota’s 24-Hour Gran Turismo 5 Challenge at the 2010 Australian Motor Show, and have already shared their impressions from the event. Even though they were admittedly casual players, they enjoyed it quite a bit:

Maybe it was the occasion, maybe it was the race environment, or the fact that the race kinda meant something, but we found the Gran Turismo 5 experience a very satisfying one – and we have a renewed excitement for the game.

Read their full impressions here. Unfortunately (and, perhaps, unsurprisingly), there was no mention of a day/night transition, weather, pit-stops, or anything else new. As of writing, this is the only article I’ve found describing this apparently low-key event. If you were at or participated in the virtual endurance race and have anything to add, please let me know.

UPDATES: A few more videos and impressions from the event are starting to roll in. Here’s a few impressions from reader Joshua:

I wasn’t involved in the GT5 endurance event, I did have a few runs on the pod
with the FT86 on Rome. As for the demo, and after playing the Best Buy demo in the US, the physics are the same between the 2. They are a big improvement over the GT5 TT demo, with a noticeable focus on tyre grip, and weight transfer. The graphics are seamless, vivid and i’m positive it was holding 60fps the whole time.

Video from during the competition, while the auto show is closed (thanks, Jhonatas!):

UPDATE 2: Check out ore impressions and results from the event at SpeedCafe. Thanks for the tip, Chops!

Does anyone who attended this event know how the PS3s were linked? I believe we are still waiting for confirmation on LAN play so it would be interesting to know how this event was run

  2. Mad94d

Played this today at the Sydney Motor show. Good game, physics are improved. Weight transfer is MUCH better than before. Apart from that I can’t say much, was too busy concentrating to find out much else.

Took video of both my runs, although the screen is not clear due to crap camera. I’ll post the videos up on the forum tomorrow.

  3. DarthTurismo

Man i know it’s been said again and again but why……..!!!!!!

Why is it that the guys that have absolutely no idea how to drive or have absolutely no interest in the game get involved in a 24hr race?????

That video just reiterates my frustration… he looks like he couldnt give a crap and he is sitting in a seat that millions of people would die to be in… i’ve well n truly spat my dummy!!!! sigh…..

    1. F.G.

Because there’s absolutely no point getting a GT fanboy to review GT5.

He presents the average Joe gamer, and will have a less biased few compared to you, for example.

    2. DarthTurismo

So you honestly believe that a guy with no interest in GT5 or racing games in general can make an honest appraisel of a game like GT5? Let’s agree to disagree on that one!!

  4. GTbyPlaystation

I’m heading to the motor show this weekend, I may take some videos and/or photos and upload them in a thread. Finally Australia gets some GT5 action.

  5. Traviizter

Bored. End of. Lost all hype over the game; finding better things to do; finding out that real life is a lot, LOT better than what this game could ever be.. :P

  6. Ferrari

    Sigh..
This is bull, all I wanna do is play the damn game and not get teased so much.
Polyphony needs to get their priorities straight because I just have a feeling we wont have this game by December 1st..

  7. Sigmaviper11

Sweet jesus will they just annoucne some more new features or something!? I mean I know the new release date will most likely be a while from now, possibly Christmas, but come on!

  8. LTX

“The graphics are seamless, vivid and i’m positive it was holding 60fps the whole time.”

With no weather or other cars on track. Sure is damage control in here.

  9. NASCARFAN160

Hey! Did you guys hear there’s this game called Gran Turismo 5 coming out?! I hear it’s gonna be awesome! :)

  10. OmnipotenceZERO

IMO they should make a limited number of Save attempts possible IF such feature really exists. For example, 2 or 3 times during the whole race. So it depends on you, wether u wanna divide the time into 3 equal segments (meaning 2 saves only, 8hrs-8hrs-8hrs) i.e. save every 8 hours; or 10-2-12, 6-8-10, etc. I think thats a good way to put it, cuz else it would simply be so easy and pointless when everyone can just keep saving every single hour for 23 times in a row (no, I didn’t miscalculate , since u don’t save the 24th time).

    1. OmnipotenceZERO

But honestly speaking, I wouldn’t say the whole idea is bad. You guys are right about it, cuz just as you said it makes the race unrealistic and not as “epic” as what a real 24-hrs race is, BUT, what if for some reason, suddenly the 23rd hour the electricity is cut off, or internet is disconnected? (incase of online races) Or you need to give your ps3 a break? Or you simply CANT continue due to studies/work (nope again, im not a 15yr old to study in a school, i study in a university, takin a serious course, So yeah unlike many other people I cant spend as much time/have a life.) I do not have enough spare time like others to be like “Oh ok, I’ll just try it once again!” But on the other hand, I cant miss a trophy or anything in GT5, as im a hardcore fan of GT. So I think its a good deal to have the save feature BUT just as said, with a limited number of times.

    2. OmnipotenceZERO

      Semi-Off topic:
Love the look on that guy’s face.
      75%-Off-Topic:
Why isnt anyone talkin about the feature that Kaz said might actually exist in the game? i.e. the rewind feature…? has it been officially announced yet? Hope not.
      Extremely-Off topic:
Did you know Duke Nukem Forever may actually come before GT5? Search it up in google… Not confirmed yet though…
Gran Turismo 5: ====> The REAL Waiting Simulator.
Sorry for the separated comments, for some reason I couldn’t submit it all in one.

    3. F.G.

Yeah, but you have to understand that no everyone playing GT5 is a hardcore racer. And seeing as you must complete these endurance races to progress, many people wouldn’t be happy spending 24 hrs straight on a single race.

It’s difficult because GT5 is trying to cater for a large audience i.e. all PS3 owners, so they have to take the most sensible option.

    4. occasionalracer

At the end of the day there will always be the pause button to take a break, but honestly to sit in front of a TV for even 8 hrs is insane and can be damaging to your health. I mean like not moving, eating, giving your eyes a break, it’s not the same as being in a real car. Of course during endurance races online pausing or saving is not an option, so to run a real life 24hrs is out of question anyway. I know I’m not wasting my life racing against cpu brain, so for me this whole saving feature is no big deal. I’ll be happy enough if we get full length races online, like 1-2 hrs, that’s plenty of endurance right there. I mean endurance races are mainly a show of what manufacturers and engineers are capable of developing and not so much dependant of the highest level of skill from a driver, so racing that long in a game is a little ridicules, especially if the computer is throwing mechanical damage at you out of the blue.

  11. ken_b

Oh man Omni, bite your tongue! I highly doubt that will be the case with what is known to be the cause of the delays. The update to the newer version SDK doesn’t take long, but its the QA process that I’m sure is a lengthy process. Nonetheless, we almost wait patiently! Sure would be cool if they announced the new release date on Nov.2, when we should have been able to drive lap one!!

    Oh and F.G….., hello!

    1. OmnipotenceZERO

I literally did bite my tongue for the sake of my statement being wrong lol. Yeah…amen
      Btw F.G…, Hello too!

  12. ken_b

Thats the F face….F for focus! haha, get your minds out of he gutter! I still can’t wait for the day the headline reads, Sony/PD Confirms new release date. That would be a good day!!! Meanwhile, after work/gym today…we hit GT5P online…see ya there!

  13. OmnipotenceZERO

lol @ the guy’s face. Wonder what hes looking at.
    “WTF, This is Car Pornography!!”
Or maybe the pit stop crews are female if u know what i mean… their positions when changin tires ‘n stuff lol.

    1. jimantonic

i think he has just been overtaken by an AI car, looked to the left as it overtook him and realised that PD has animated his mum as the driver of all AI cars.

  14. Skidmark

Perhaps we should just set the release date ourselves, get all excited about it and then when ‘our date’ arrives we can be shocked when another delay is announced and the date passes…wait a minute we already did that in March!
I think if you look up the word masochist in the dictionary there’ll be as a synonym “Gran Turismo 5 fan who has a collector’s edition on order since they were first announced”.
Admittedly I like to punish myself for some mis-deed (not sure what that was but…)so I’ll read the yet to be published details of the endurance race just to suffer a bit more.
It would be nice to know when I’ll have to find something else to punish myself with…WHEN WILL WE HAVE ANOTHER DATE?

    1. OmnipotenceZERO

LOL its funny these days people’s demands are different. We used to hear lots of people say like “WHEN WILL WE HAVE THE GAME??”
Now its like “WHEN WILL WE HAVE ANOTHER DATE?”
Probably Next month it will be like “WHEN WILL WE HAVE AN ANNOUNCEMENT THAT ANNOUNCES A FUTURE ANNOUNCEMENT FOR THE NEW RELEASE DATE!!!”

    2. JimInPT

Yes, J-K, we know that. We also know they announced the game would ship on Nov. 2nd and have NOT announced why it’s not all of a sudden.

So what’s your point? Announcements mean nothing anymore.

  15. Red_9

I find it odd that they’re still going through with these press events, yet are not mentioning any new release dates.

Also, anyone else think they should be testing their online component a bit more?

    1. Jope

These events have probably been scheduled way before they even knew of the inevitable delay. I bet this time they won’t give a release date unless they’re absolutely 100% positive they can make it stick.

    2. Dale

The game has been in development for 6 freaking years. What makes you think the online component needs more testing?

    3. Red_9

Because since Prologue, there hasn’t been any beta testing. Seeing as how Prologue’s online component had flaws, and it was never beta tested, you’d think they’d want to have a few closed betas to iron out the kinks. I wouldn’t be surprised if the penalty system was still whack and it was bumper cars in GT5.

  16. Gregormeister

    @ CCJ:
Did you drive yourself or where did you get the infos?

    If you drove yourself:
    – Did they show a day/night transition?
    – How did it feel?
    – What about graphics and sound?

    Questions over questions… :-)

  17. djKyoto

Played FT-86 G-Sports on Rome, got a clean lap on video, will upload and link soon Jordan.

Can confirm damage was on, felt pretty solid. Had great fun, even tho I couldn’t put it on manual.

On the XMB it just said it was a “GT5 2010 Demo”. Firmware was 3.42 Demo Mode.

    1. GoldUltima

Thank you for not sucking at driving. It’s nice to be able to see some videos of how it will play with a decent driver behind the wheel, not what it looks like to spin out and rape the wall while damage is turned off. You had some pretty good speed going into the corners and it looked quite smooth overall. Thanks for the great upload. ^_^

  18. CCJ

    more details

    – Damage model was on and looked awesome.
    – Didn’t drive with the clutch and H box, I’m a bit of a noob in that regard.
    – It was such a long race that there was very little interaction with the AI, so nothing to report on that really

    1. occasionalracer

How was the damage taken care of then? I’m sure the car didn’t accumulate significant damage or it was “reset” every once in a while right? Driving H-pattern would be wrong anyway as this car uses sequential. Were all the AI’s Toyota’s too?

    2. syaieya

I was under the impression that this was just a simple 1 team vs 1 team race with each team getting a single car and switching out on the hour mark. I didn’t think there would be AI at all in a multiplayer event, the only gran turismo game to have this in the past was GTPSP. Having them at all in a multiplayer race is definitely something to note.

  19. ICEMANZIDANE

We don’t need to wait that they mention day to night transistions
because we saw it in de Le Man videos

    1. Paulo

It has to be on the Ring, Le Mans and the Ring both have actual 24 hr events, why wouldn’t they include it?? Not worried about this at all.

    2. George

@ Pale you said day/night on every track, is it possible to see the clubman/special stage tracks finally with sunlight?
I think not but i would love such a surprize…

    1. Themadcat001

Trk29 – Guess you didn’t read the article where he mentions he only got to play for an hour and there wasn’t any time for any weather transitions that they were givin the ability to play in/see most likely due to the whether didn’t magically change in 1 hour like everyone was expecting it too, nor did it change to night in 1 hour on a 24 hour course.

  20. Anes

There’ll be a writeup in Motor magazine Jordan but I think it’s not out for over a week. A few members from here did actually go to the event though.

    1. ICEMANZIDANE

      i hope not
in real life they don’t stop the 24h race XDif you want to drive an 24h race then drive it with 3-4 friends like in the real 24h race

ps:we saw day to night transistions in some videos …

    2. Hawar

I hope they do have a save function. I’m pretty sure more than half of us have jobs and won’t coordinate with 3-4 friends to have a day off to do this one competition. Even if they did, it would only be complete on one system so you’d have to do it 3-4 more times to complete the competition on their systems too.

    3. HugoStiglitz_420

@ICEMANZIDANE your name is half UFC fighter, half football player that hieadbutts people like a mad man. the other guy deserved it

    4. mik_69

@ Hawar – i think you are spot on. I expect 99% of GT5 players will not be able to arrange a 24 hour race with friends or solely through their day to day commitments. Throw in the PS3 overheating problems as well

@ IceMan – in real life they also use real cars and drive on a real race track! ;)
This is similation and a save feature is an absolute MUST for endurance races. You don;t have to use it if you don;t want to.

    5. George

The save feature if implimented (we all used good old pause in the previous games) it should be used only while pitting the car, otherwise it could be used like the “rewind” effect in games like dirt.

    1. Jump_Ace

The first video shows some good driving compared to what I normally see for these GT5 demo videos
