Fanatec Reveals New QR2 Quick Release System, Available to Order Now

Fanatec has revealed its long-awaited, second-generation quick release system, QR2, and it’s available to order from today.

The QR2 mechanism replaces the original QR1, with a whole new locking system intended to improve the stability and security of the wheel connection in both a physical sense and an electronic one.

Where the QR1 used spring-loaded balls and, on some version, a locking nut, the QR2 employs a simple tapered coupling on the wheel base and retractable, spring-loaded locking pins on the wheel rim. This makes it easier to clip the wheel on and more secure once it’s in place.

There’s three different versions of QR2 Wheel Side and two versions of the Base Side, and which version you’ll need depends on your existing hardware.

On the Base Side the two models are called Type C and Type M. The cheaper Type C is designed for CSL DD (including Gran Turismo DD) bases, and is made from die-cast aluminum, while the Type M is CNC-machined aluminum and made for the Podium DD1/2 and F1 bases. They’re priced at $/€69.95 and $/€149.95 respectively.

There’s a little more variance with the three Wheel Side items, called QR2 Lite, QR2, and QR2 Pro. As you’d expect, the Lite is the entry level option and it’s made from a carbon-fiber reinforced composite. QR2 is a die-cast aluminum piece, with the QR2 Pro again a CNC-machined aluminum item.

As a note of caution, the QR2 Lite doesn’t support the high-torque modes of the Podium wheelbases, so you’d need to pair a QR2-equipped podium with one of the two metal Wheel Side connectors. The Lite model comes in at $/€59.95, with the core QR2 at $/€99.95 and the gold-colored Pro at $/€199.95.

You can pick up the items in one of four bundles at a discount, with a QR2 Pro/Type M bundle priced at $/€299.95 — a $/€49.95 saving — and the entry-level Lite/Type C bundle for $/€19.95 off at $/€109.95.

Fanatec is in the process of transitioning all of its QR1-equipped products to the QR2, which it states will take 1-2 years. However players who already own wheels and bases with QR1 can purchase the QR2 and convert their own setup.
