The FIA Wants to Know What You Think About Racing Esports

The Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), the governing body of world motorsport, is inviting motorsport and racing game fans to fill out a new survey on the topic of racing esports as it looks to help develop the future of motorsport.

It’s a relatively short survey which should take around five minutes to complete and the FIA says it “will help us to develop new initiatives and support the growth of this exciting and fast paced sport”.

The questions are relatively simple, starting off with the usual demographic queries before heading into the meat of the survey.

Participants will face questions about what level of interest they have in motorsports, motorsport esports, and general esports, as well as their level of involvement in motorsport and esports.

Some interesting questions appear on the final page of the survey, which deal with how respondees would perceive the FIA’s presence in the esports industry — from recognition, accessibility, and sporting integrity to driving standards and global co-ordination.

The survey also asks about the titles that you may have experience with and for which you’d like to see esports events. It’s interesting to see Forza Horizon 5 and the Need for Speed series on that latter list, and quite tempting to respond that you would be very interested in seeing an esports series based on them…

Once the survey period has ended, the FIA will share the results across its social channels. This is currently planned for Q4 of 2023.

Of course the FIA has already dipped its toes into the esports waters, perhaps most notably with its endorsement of the Gran Turismo World Series between 2017 and 2021 — and its still unrealized FIA Digital License.

It’s also included virtual motorsport in both editions of the FIA Motorsport Games — at Vallelunga and Le Castellet — and been involved in the two Olympic Virtual Series events. Numerous FIA series also have their own official esports events, including Formula One.
