I'm not sure but i've heard that an F1 car brake pedal needs around 70 newtons of force to be full on. He can't have been unconcious to apply that kind of force.

The brake graphics they show on the broadcasts are incorrect, whenever a driver touches the brakepedal the graphic shows he's fully on the brakes, which we know is not realistic for every single brakingzone.

The throttle graph seems to be correct though, meaning he was fully on the throttle but still applying a decent amount of brakes since he wasn't accelerating like he would've been if he was flatout.

I doubt he'll be racing tomorrow, hopefully no permanent injuries.
 
The video clearly shows Massa in contact with accelerator and brake simultaneously after the first impact, with about 1g decelerative effort. The giant, straight, black skidmarks on the track through the corner and the repeated locking and freeing of the front wheels corroborate the telemetry - Massa was conscious, just.


Before I continue I'd like to point out that this picture is gruesome and probably not work-safe. It shows a conscious, but injured Massa after the collision, while he's out of the car and the extent of his injuries - and how fortunate he was.

I think it's too late to replace a driver after qualifying, I might be wrong but I think the driver lineup has to be final before qualifying.

If it is allowed then I don't think Ferrari would replace him anyway, as a show of respect.

UPDATE:

Apparently Massa has a fracture in his skull, a gash and a concussion. The fracture is above his left eye and will require an operation. This is according to our finnish F1 broadcaster.

That's about as good a result we could expect from an impact like that. Especially after what we saw with Henry Surtees. :sick:

Let's hope Massa's recovery is as quick and painless as possible. 👍

Felipe Massa is to undergo surgery in hospital in Budapest after sustaining head injuries in his violent qualifying crash at the Hungaroring.


The Ferrari driver slammed into the tyre barriers at the fast turn four having been hit on the head by a flying piece of debris, believed to have come from Rubens Barrichello's Brawn.


Initial reports suggested he had escaped serious injury, but Ferrari has now announced that he will need an operation and to remain in intensive care.


"After the accident during the qualifying session of the Grand Prix of Hungary , Felipe Massa was airlifted to the AEK hospital in Budapest," said a team statement.


"Felipe was conscious at the arrival at the hospital and his general condition remains stable.


"Following a complete medical examination it emerged that he had suffered a cut on his forehead, a bone damage of his skull and a brain concussion.


"These conditions need to be operated on after which he will remain under observation in intensive care."


Massa had made it through to Q3 prior to the crash, which occurred right at the end of Q2, but will clearly not compete tomorrow given his injuries.

Felipe is a lucky boy, just a bit lower and it would have gone in to the visor, with possibly catastrophic consequences. All the best for his quick recovery for the Valencia GP.

I think it did sort of go through his visor a bit, although perhaps not directly. Either way its a real shame, a skull fracture and brain concussion isn't a good injury (if you could describe minor injuries as good).

Yeah, a bit lower and it would have been curtains for sure, I just hope he pulls through this.
 
How light is Alonso! Thought he'd gone a bit lighter but that's crazy. Isn't it? Surely he'll be stopping about 10 laps sooner??
 
I hope Massa makes a fully recovery, the fact that he was able to talk after the crash and raised his arm when on the stretcher hopefully means that there was no damage to his brain. :nervous:

I am quite concerned about his left eye as he has a big cut across the socket...:nervous:

Assuming that Massa is not able to race tommorow, will someone be able to take his place on the grid?

Perhaps Schumacher? Although I haven't seen him around the paddock this weekend...

Note on improving safety in F1: In American motorsports, we throw the yellow flag for debris. Perhaps the FIA should hire more spotters to look for debris and bring out the yellow flag if they spot debris. In some cases, full course cautions are necessary to protect track workers while they remove the debris from the track.

Anyone remember the French Grand Prix where Kimi's exhaust pipe end was hanging off? Same accident could have occurred there.

What kind of protection level does an F1 helmet provide?

On the video telemetry the G force meter went off the scale on impact. The Brake + throttle full on provided 1.3g of retardation, but much less after he hit the grass.

Surely nobody in the crowd would be stupid enough to throw something at him?:ouch:

No, because Massa qualified the car, so he's the only person that can race it.

Jenson is looking good for the race tomorrow. Fuelled up heavier than everyone inf ront of him.

Alonso's pole is just a joke. What's the point of pole if you need to stop after only a few laps?

who knows maybe they will be trying for a 3 stopper and hoping that works. but lets face it we see it all the time people using super low weights just to be on pole.
 
Massa has had bleeding into his brain...The poor bugger could be out for the season.
 
MTV3's (Finnish broadcasting company) is airing right now their ten o'clock news. They claim he is in GREAT DANGER. His surgery went well. Felipe will NOT attend the tomorrow's race nor will he be replaced by anyone.

Sky sports news are reporting Massa is in a life threatening condition.

Hope he pulls through.

using SI units of Metres per second and Kilograms:

Force = M * A

Force = 0.8 * 44

Force = 35.2 Newtons

Anyone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong on this, perhaps EK=1/2MV^2 might be more relevant?
