A 3-stopper is possible: Low fuel + starting on the pole = He could get enough advantage to do the 1st pitstop and come back in 3rd postition.
 
How long before we see someone come out with a closed cockpit open-wheeler concept, in the name of safety?
 
I forsee a few more safety regulations entering the sport soon after this and Henry Surtees death last week. The problem is, how? Two freak accidents in 7 days what are the chances of that? Probably about as easy to work out as the force of the springs impact. Saying that, if it wasnt for his polycarbon helmet and the HANS he'd certainly be dead now

Why not....it's already used in Drag Boat racing, where they use F-16 cockpits to keep them secure. I'm sure some small modifications could ensure it's use in F1 without being too detrimental to aerodynamics or making the cars too wacky to look at. :)
 
I think you may find the possibility of being trapped in a covered cockpit, out weighs the likely hood of being hit by debris.

I guess they could base it on the Caparo T1.

Although as has been stated there is a problem if you get trapped in the cockpit while it's on fire.

I think a roll bar similar to what a top-fuel car has would work best since it still provides a quick exit as well as a way to prevent incidents like we have seen recently.

It would've stopped the Surtees crash with the TF setup Justin, but it would've done absolutely nothing for Massa. The T1 Caparo seems a lot better overall.

But remember guys, the F16 cockpits used in boat racing are designed to be opened from the outside aswell as inside within seconds, otherwise the person drowns from all the water coming in. :eek: It's mainly to make sure the person stays in their drivers seat and not disintegrate upon impact when the boat flips or dives.
 
We could make auto racing completely safe and try to cover every aspect of safety, for every possible accident. The sport would then be very different, because to cover every safety aspect, and guarantee that drivers won't get injured or die, it would have to be banned.

That nearly happened after the Paris-Madrid race of 1903, where 9 people died. The French government seized the cars and that should have been the end of auto racing as we know it, but the show went on.
Then it nearly happened again in 1955 at Le Mans, where 80 spectators and a driver died. France, Switzerland and Germany banned auto racing as a result, and Mercedes pulled out of racing for 40 or so years. However, France and Germany eventually pulled their racing bans. It appears, that despite the utter stupidity of having a sport where deaths are frequent and gruesome, the show had to go on... Why is that?

To be honest, I don't really know. All I do know is that I'm very passionate about it, despite the niggling feeling in the back of your head that your favourite driver could die next weekend from some freak accident. We must all be crazy. However, it is amazing how far we have come in making even the most violent accidents quite safe. Kubica and Massa should be dead by now. Thankfully, they aren't. :)

I remember reading after the Senna crash that more people where killed each year on golf courses that in motor racing. That puts it in some form of context. It's more a perception of danger that actual danger.

More people play golf than go motor racing. Infinitely more, since it's much cheaper.

And, in motor-racing, you not only have a 1-2 ton steel vault protecting you from harm, but you've also got a helmet that will stop any stray golf balls from killing you.

Damn shame for Alonso and Vettel... but damn, what a race from Hamilton... qualifies high and shoots to within spitting distance of first place within the first few laps and overtakes Alonso as he pits. Even if Alonso didn't lose a wheel after that pitstop, Hamilton's pace was much better than his, and he probably could have kept first, anyway.

Great race for Glock on what was almost a one-stopper. Great race for both Kimi and Webber... Brawn made the points, but it seems increasingly apparent that the rest of the field is getting faster around them. Consider... this was a dry race and relatively warm race, which is supposed to be their forte...

This is going to be a very interesting second half to the season.
 
How'd Alguersuari do? I haven't seen the the race on TV yet.

He did ok, nothing special he stayed out of harms way most of the time but he didn't put a foot wrong all race, didn't screw up his pit stops or anything.
He did put down some competitive laptimes too.

Don't know what happened to Buemi, he went off the track at turn 2 later in the race and dropped down the field by the end, so I can't tell you if Jaime out-raced him.


Impressive return to form for McLaren and Hamilton as well as continuing pace from Williams (good starts by both Rosberg and Nakajima too!). Ferrari in the mix too as well as Toyota not doing too bad. The remaining races could be quite possibly won between 6 teams.
Brawn going nowhere at the moment, they need to fix the BGP001, as it has a problem somewhere, there are no more excuses for bad results and poor performance.

I had my heart in my mouth when I saw Alonso's wheel come off! Very glad it happened with no one behind and it quickly slowed down and stopped next to the barriers and not on track. Was worried with the bits of wheel cover too. Glad nothing bad happened and hope Massa continues to recover.

Thoroughly enjoyed this race, although it might be due to seeing my two favourite drivers finishing 1st and 2nd. I've always enjoyed watching the Hungarian GP, I love the unexpected results it tends to produce.

I'm not looking forward to this 4 week break. :(
 
What a boring race for the last part, but happy with the result table and kimi's race style.

Just shocked this morning about felipe's accident since we recorded qualifying. hope for him to get better as soon as possible.

Luckily no punishment for kimi with the start chaos in the first corner. Also strange that the incident in the pitstop was not even investigated as that was a huge mistake from the team.
 
Great race from Hamilton, it's nice to see him back (and I guess he grew up as a driver after a few months of "backmarking")

My quick review:

I don't see why Raikkonen should be punished because of Turns 1-2 but then again a dangerous precedent was set with Webber's penalty in the previous race. We'll see what happens.

Red Bull, however should be punished for releasing Webber in the pits when Raikkonen was passing by. That was very dangerous.

Webber got a litle closer to Button, but Jenson limited the damages losing only 3 points to the current 2nd placed in the championship.

Hoping the best for Massa.

Promising start from Alguersuari.

EDIT: Wow, wasn't expecting a penalty for Renault. I guess "stewards have become very "sensitive" to loose wheels and parts.

You have incorrectly assumed that the most common cause of death out on a golf course is from stray golf balls, in fact, lightning strikes are.

Solid race from Webber, could have been worse, should have been better, but at least he clinched the 2nd spot in the championship, and bridged a small gap to his team mate.
 
F1 is so much better without the Brawn domination

I enjoyed the race as much as when Brawn did dominate, there hasn't really been a massive change in the quality of the racing, just that the winners and losers have changed - and while thats all well and good, I'm more interested in the on-track action rather than the results.
Though obviously I'm a little disappointed Brawn didn't manage to find their performance again, but I have more drivers to support than just Button and Barrichello, though one of them wasn't there today sadly.

It was great seeing Hamilton finally win though, not sure if he's made up for the Melbourne debacle, it was great to see a driver who had been rather doom and gloom earlier now all smiles.
 
Ferrari vs. McLaren rivalry is back, great news!!! Hope this will teach Red Bull and Braqwn to get KERS on their cars or they will never win another race in 2009.

So you want them to develop and install KERS, on a car not designed for it, at great expense, for the next 7 races? Putting KERS on the Brawn and Redbull would be a pointless and expensive exercise.
