It is adventurous to overtake on the outside
It is silly to overtake on the outside in an open wheeler
It is crazy to overtake on the outside in an open wheeler on a 90 degree bend
It is ludicrous to overtake on the outside in an open wheeler on a 90 degree bend on a street course.

Hold on, 6 people have retired? 2 were in crash related incidents. Button was told to push hard, then Red Bull heard it, and informed it to Webber. 3 seconds are between them.

Hamilton was ahead and it was Webber who was attempting to get the position back.

It was the very definition of a racing incident. 2 cars come together, both at fault, no one person to blame.

If you hand out penalties for that, then you end up handing out penalties all over the place and everyone is frightened to overtake anyone.

Jenson is really going for Webber now, hopefully Mark can keep him off!

I have watched the replay and there would be no way if Webber could give way, unless he had cut the corner. It is just another racing incident.

He could have braked earlier and conceded the position. Hamilton was in trouble either way. He had 3 options.

1. Take the corner wide outside of the ripple strip and then receive a penalty for holding a position by cutting the corner (through the outside)

2. Give webber more room and more than likely end up hitting the ripple strip or compromising the speed for the next corner and losing the place anyway.

3. Take the corner as is and well we saw how that ended up.

Hamilton was going to lose that spot no matter what he did.

I don't think so... Alonso will only be 9 points off the lead as the results stand. Ferrari must have been wishing for a penalty for Webber, since it would probably have put Alonso into the lead in the Championship.

Partially. Hamilton already had a half-length on Webber, he could have made it stick if he hadn't turned in so sharply... from the replay angle, he tried to give Webber enough room... but it wasn't quite enough. Webber could have avoided him by taking more curb, but that would mean going slower, and he wasn't obliged to go off-road to avoid him. It was a split second thing, and Hamilton lost the gamble. Classic racing incident... doesn't seem like either driver wanted that to happen.

At this point, the only question left is whether we'll finish all 61 laps... almost 10 pm on my watch (same local time as Singapore...)

Alonso totally deserves this win. Dominated in qualifying... has been the fastest of anybody in the tricky second and third sector.

This wont be a full race finish, I expect they will finish 60 laps before the 2 hour mark. A very good race today :)
 
Alonso can easily keep Vettel at bay. He's not a noob at keeping a possibly faster car behind him, you know.

A man nobody's talking about is Rosberg, great 5th place.
 
That was a considerably better race that I was expecting. Well done to Alonso & Vettel.

Webber extends his championship and Button has gained 30 points on Hamilton in the last two races.
 
He had a very quiet run, but still a great finish.

I don't think it was the actual contact between Webber and Hamilton that put Hamilton out of the race. I think it was that second bump on the right curb that did it. Those curbs on this track are brutal.
 
That was impressive driving by - Vettel! I've never seen him drive such a controlled race. Not a single mistake by either one of the first two.
 
Well... that was... interesting.

Alonso wins Singapore... yet again... this time no Piquets had to crash to make it happen... and even with a number of safety cars conspiring against him, he won it, anyway.

Vettel should be happy with that result. He could never quite match Alonso through the chicanes, but he was on his tail all race.

Webber managed to salvage the race through inspired pit strategy... well.. partially... McLaren just happened to hand him the race on a silver platter by goofing up their own pits.

Button's championship hopes are still alive with that fourth... good solid drive, though that was to be expected.

Solid drives from Rosberg and Barrichelo... Kubica takes a risky second stop and makes up a few places behind them with his fresh tires... Sutil and Hulk make up a lot of places from a bad quali, but the high attrition rates surely helped... Massa salvages a bad weekend by finishing in the last points-scoring position.

Hamilton is the big loser tonight... though I can understand why he took the risk... beating Webber here would have lowered his deficit to Mark to two to three points... losing to him would have increased the gap. Still... I personally would have stuck with fourth.

Pretty exciting race. Lots of battles, lots of overtaking, lots of drama. And not often do you get a torch runner preceding the race leaders to the checkered flag... :dopey:

Nar Hamilton wasn't ahead he was along side on the outside. The move wasn't complete and he caused the incident by turning in on Webber. It's still a racing incident for sure, but it was Hamilton's fault because he expected Webber to brake early and avoid possible contact - something a stubborn Aussie like him won't do.


Kubica on the other hand was fortunate Sutil recognised the he had to brake early because Kubica was coming through no matter what!
 
Vettel did have a slight mistake during his pit stop. He had 2nd gear selected and nearly stalled the car trying to leave the box.

Not that it affected his race at all.
