I don't think that was planned. Seemed more like they were afraid his previous time wouldn't get him to Q2 so they went with the soft tires.

Which was very silly because Kobayashi was already out and the three 'newish' teams were never gonna top that, even with Kovalainen's great form right now, if they were that afraid, they should've just told him to buck his ideas up and go back out on hards.

Massa was extremely dissapointing today.

I actually think Vettel in today's Ferrari or Mercedes would be P3 at least. (although the Fezza seems only good enough for 5th)..

And how exactly (with solid evidence) do you come to this conclusion?

Agreed.

He said I think, so it could be an opinion, an opinion doesn't need evidence.

I actually did read what he said (and what he "thinks"). I was just curious as to why exactly (based on what) he thinks this? I never said his opinion was wrong or something

Which? The Mercedes is already 3rd in the hands of Rosberg. Vettel is easily as good as and perhaps a little bit faster than Rosberg.
The Ferrari while not on pace with the rest this weekend, is normally quite decent. Again, I reckon Vettel is easily as fast if not faster than Alonso.

The evidence is that Rosberg and Alonso are 3rd and 5th respectively, nothing outrageous here. Schumacher and Massa are no where near Vettel's ability this season.

Relative to at least the Mclaren and RB, the Ferrari has been garbase this year. I still don't know exactly how you reckon (when there is really no proper evidence to support such claims) that Vettel is easily as fast if not faster than Alonso...but I won't bother asking anymore.

Schumi might be getting a grid place penalty. Blocking Hamilton on his hot lap.

You say that with such authority, yet no action was taken whatsoever because it wasn't necessary. Don't think Hamilton even complained about it... Which has got to be a first for him. Occasionally, you are just going to get blocked. It's not as if it harmed Hamilton in any way. He still made it easily through to the next session and had plenty of time left.

It does not matter if the FIA IS CORRUPT. If they are CORRUPT (taking money from RBR/Renault/Red Bull/whomever else) then it does not matter they can fail the checks and officially pass every time.

I'm not saying that the RBR cars are illegal, they may not be. The FIA may not be corrupt. But if the FIA is taking money from the top team then you cant say the car is legal either.

Need a hand opening that can of worms???

If you're going to start claiming that the fia is corrupt, you should find some evidence. Otherwise, this is just a ludicrous claim.

I'm just getting sick of the Red Bull flexi-wing stuff. There is no way that it should be allowed to touch the ground on the straights. It's somehow getting pass the tests though which is plain annnoying.

I too am getting sick of the Red Bull front wing story. It's not a trick. They've passed every test that the FIA has levied at it. Therefore it is legal. They have a very competent team of scrutineers. You only have to look at the reason for both Sauber's getting dq'd in australia to see that. Adrian Newey has cleverly performed a masterstroke that the other teams can't figure out. The worst culprit is Mclaren. I used to like Martin Whitmarsh, but now I'm getting fed up seeing him time and time again implying that Red Bull are breaking the rules. This is Adrian Newey we're talking about here. Look at the cars he's designed in the past. This is no fluke, it's ingenuity.

Here we go with the conspiracy theories again. The rules have been changed and the weight placed on the wing in testing has been nearly doubled. The RBR chassis is legal. Get over it.
👍

I think all the drivers should have to swap cars. For example, vettel after his Australia win would have to drive the Virgin, Webber the Lotus.

What a ridiculous idea. Were you serious?

Rossticles
Good job on the double post and that's a horrible idea. Vettel is a great qualifier and his pace over Webber in an identical car proves it. He shouldn't be penalized for the hard work of Newey and the rest of the technical gurus.

Technically Webber had the updates as Vettel destroyed his in fp1. Would be interesting to see how well Seb would have done with the same parts.

Rich S
Vettel wouldnt be penalized because he'd still drive the RBR in every other race. Along with the other very talented drivers who normally only get the Virgin's, HRT's & Lotus'.

What do you think the teams would have to say about this stupid idea?

The Outlaw
I bet even someone like Di Resta would think otherwise, being that he out pole'd Vettel by 5/1 when they were team mates in the 06 Euro F3 series Now I won't mention how he got owned in 05 by 4 other drivers (like Hamilton, Sutil, di Grassi) in Euro F3, in equal machinery as well.

Just putting some ice on the hype train...

He was younger than all of them. Have you every heard of people maturing with age? I forgot, that if you were to put an 18 year old alonso in the Renault he would have been world champion straight away... His two championships were based on consistency and maturity. Both of which come with age (i.e experience).

So sad to see yet another race thread descend into Vettel bashing... Maybe the mods will actually do something about this... Or at least not warn me for being off topic despite the fact that I was only replying to the bashing...

It was a great effort from Vettel and Rosberg today. I can see Rosberg getting his first win soon, but I think Vettel has this in the bag. Kobayashi will be fun to watch.

No evidence that Vettel is as fast or faster than Alonso? Do you even watch F1? I don't need to give you that evidence, if you actually watched any F1 since 2008 (or even 2007) its pretty clear to anyone that Vettel is fast.

But no one can be as fast as Alonso, eh?

I don't understand how you don't see that.

Yea, lets just ignore the fact that the car is a relevant and crucial key to his speed and success (and numerous pole positions) And his medicore teammate that we have to compare him to, who is now regularly taking a trashing (like the other weaklings like Massa & Schumacher).

I'm not saying Vettel isn't fast (I know he is damn fast...probably up there with the current best) - the problem I have is with people putting him on some (he's the fastest driver on the grid) pedastal that he still has yet to truly earn (if you think he has...that's a joke IMO).

When Alonso won back-to-back championships he was driving a slow Renault? The being on a team with a fast car argument holds no weight.

Who is the fastest driver on the grid currently? And how do you come to that conclusion? I've always thought of the reigning drivers' champion as the fastest. It makes sense.

So basically you don't have a problem me saying he is fast. But you do have a problem with me saying he is probably as fast as Alonso? What is different about Alonso? He only won or contended for championships in the best cars...just like everyone. Both Vettel and Alonso have plenty of examples of shining in slower machinery and in difficult circumstances. Both have beaten decent teammates, and while Vettel hasn't had a teammate like Hamilton, its not hard to imagine Vettel being able to beat or match a strong teammate.

I'm not the one putting drivers on pedestals here.

I find it rather odd how some of you are trying to flip the script on me now...thinking that I've made the claim or assumption that Alonso is the fastest driver on the grid  Quit sippin that Vettel kewl-aid.

I have a problem with you specifically saying you think he is easily as fast as if not faster than Alonso...despite there being no evidence to back up such an idea.

You said you thought Vettel would have qualied 3rd today if he were in the Ferrari, because he must be faster than Alonso...despite there being no real solid evidence to support this (correct me if I'm wrong). I was just curious if you could elaborate on how came up with this idea...

With that state of mind it would be impossible to say any driver is faster than another unless they're on the same team or have been previously.

Everyone is just as fast as everyone else. Maldonado is just as fast as Vettel. Duh!

I didn't say he must be faster. I said he is possibly faster and in my opinion he could have possibly qualified 3rd in such cars. I also noted that the Ferrari might only be good for 5th, implying even Vettel or anyone else couldn't really take it much further.

Alonso the one who got beat/matched by a rookie. Alonso the one who got beat/matched (depends how you judge it) by "Trulli train". Yes, I couldn't imagine a WDC beating him.

How about this - where is your evidence that Vettel couldn't?

There is no evidence....that's why I didn't make the claim ;)

Not explicitly you didn't. It was definitely implied though.

And is any of this relevent to the 2011 Turkish Grand Prix?

Claim? So now stating an opinion is making a claim? Well, I'm afraid you also made a claim.

And is any of this relevent to the 2011 Turkish Grand Prix?

Nope, well it was.

When Vettel proves he's the fastest driver by winning tomorrow, yes.

Nm...I gave up looking for an answer several post ago.

I gave you your "answer". You are looking for some "facts" that don't exist. You know why? Because I was stating my opinion which was drawn from my reasoning. This is not a scientific statement, I can only tell you why I think something, beyond that there is nothing.

I just went back and saw your reasoning (I apologize I didn't read that post in its entirity) - fair enough, that's all I asked for :)

No problem dude. 👍

got the alarm set for 5:30 tomorrow morning :)

interesting grid lineup - should make for a good amount of overtakes!

I hope Alonso doesn't botch his start like in the last races.

Its nice to see the Mercedes mixing it with the Redbull and McLarens hopefully it will be a good race 👍

Yes I was hoping to see Schumi do a little better in Q3 though :/
