Anyone know what the hell was going on in GP2 qualifying? Everyone was taking eachother out, looked like a dodgy only game..

This race does produce some unlikely winners sometimes (Trulli for example). I'd like Webber to win again.

I don't think you can say Trulli was unlikely as in qualifying he has a very impressive record of beating all his team mates there until Heikki changed that in 2010. However I do understand what you mean by that in the sense of people who have not won before like Trulli. I'm rooting for Rosberg to win, if both the McLaren drivers fail to do so.

Sounds interesting, will try and watch highlights of it. Maybe a bit like qualifying online in F1 2010 by the sounds of it.

Romain Grosjean proves yet again why he won't get a seat in F1.

If you want to have a good race anywhere in GP2 it's at Monaco

Hard to get any idea of how they are running, as they 'test' tire wear/compound and so on.

I wonder who will find a wall or guardrail first :)

Schumacher, FP1 ;)

The tyre wear isn't as dramatic as expected here, some people are predicting one-stop strategies. One stop... in 2011! :D

Reading an article, Grosjean did what his ex F1 team mate avoided today in FP2, I wonder if Grosjean would be allowed in the race due to not being inside the 107% qualifying time?

Didn't Liuzzi crash first?

I reckon the top teams will be doing two-stops but one-stop strategies from the midfield could cause havoc for them if they can't pull a big enough gap. One stop, Perez comes to mind :D.

Wow, Alonso looks good this week. Hopefully this will be a good race. Monaco is often boring in the dry...

Oh and, everyone who thinks Monaco is too dangerous to use DRS on, read this
http://www.f1fanatic.co.uk/2011/05/16/drs-unsafe-monaco-monaco-unsafe-f1/

I like how that article ignores that the DRS is supposedly banned for Eau Rouge at Spa too. I wouldn't be surprised if it gets banned for 130R.

This isn't about Monaco being unsafe, its about the DRS being unsafe.

As saidur_ali said, Trulli was having a fantastic 2004 season and had grabbed pole position that weekend. It wasn't really unlikely he was going to win at all.

In fact, we have rarely had an "unlikely" winner at Monaco, only when it gets wet usually (Panis, almost Senna/Bellof, etc).
Its more about the podium spots and points positions, these are usually different here due to the attrition.

Romain Grosjean proves yet again why he won't get a seat in F1.

He's already had a seat in F1, so I guess he's already proven you wrong. But seriously, you have to be pretty blind to miss the raw talent he has. He has a bad track record at Monaco, but so what? Have you seen his races everywhere else? He's been fast in everything he has sat in bar the worst F1 car Renault have produced since they were Benetton in 2001. Not forgetting we were comparing him to Alonso at that point, and he did get quite close in qualifying near the end of 2009 (a couple of tenths off if I remember right).

I would be very surprised (and a little disappointed) if he didn't get another chance in F1, the guy clearly has talent in almost any car he sits in.

Its the same as F1, they will let him race because he obviously demonstrated the fastest pace in the practice sessions. Only an idiot would think he doesn't have the speed to drive fast enough for the rest of the grid. The 107% rule is not a penalty, its a safety rule, you can be admitted in if you can otherwise prove why you weren't able to set a time and that you have shown good pace in practice (i.e. use common sense to clearly see he isn't too slow).

I think Grosjean is under rated for what he achieved in F1. He showed good levels of speed for someone with little F1 driving experience. The potential seemed quite a lot if he ironed out his race mistakes and I'm sure that would have come with time.

Anyway he was first place in FP so he should be OK but you never know for sure until it's confirmed officially. I think the rule of 107% was introduced to keep cars more competitive for the Formula than for safety but that could also be a reason.

Obviously I know this. When he was in he never proved to me personally that he deserved that seat.

In GP2 it seems like he sets the pace in practice and qualifying but then in the races he falls away. This was similar to what I observed when he was in F1.

Good sir, are you implying that Brendon Hartley should replace Grosjean in GP2 and/or should have a seat in F1? :sly: :p

But so far he has won the first race at Istanbul, stormed from last to 10th in the second race, was penalised due to a technial infringement from 4th at the Catalunya race 1 and then had to start from the back of the grid in race 2 and stormed to 9th.

These aren't the results of someone who "falls away" in the races.

Gilles Villeneuve (home town hero!) won in 1981.

One tire stops will make for an interesting race!

Maybe Rosberg will get his victory this Sunday?

I actually really like Karun Chandok as a commentator. His experience with the new cars is much more relevant. I realise Coulthard et al are invaluable for racecraft insight, but the cars have changed so much.

David Coulthard's experience is pretty recent...

Driver: ... Red Bull, 2005 - 2008
Test Driver: Red Bull, 2009 - 2010

SpeedTV commentators were wondering what Coulthard was up to walking around Monaco. One of them said they wished their commentator job was that easy.

He doesn't commentate until the Saturday. Until then he's just a normal Monagasque resident I suppose. He owns a hotel there too, I believe.

Whats the DRS zone for Monaco? I'd say the tunnel but that is pretty dangerous. Haviing said that, overtaking at Monaco is dangerous...

About time Alonso gets his season back on track. Hope this speed from free practice wasn't a one-off. I really want to see Rosberg win too but at least he's up there.

1981 the Ferrari was a tank. But Gilles could drive anything. One of the best damned drivers of all time.

I just miss Kubica, he was awesome last year...

What was most amazing at the time was that Gilles won the race with a Turbo-tank. Forget the tank part, every and all F1 experts were cathegoric. Turbos with half sized engines (1.5L against the DFV 3.0L) , huge turbo lag (slow to respond, brutal when it did) couldn't win at the slow, twisty, straightless track that Monaco was (and is).

Well, they forgot all about Gilles :D

Nuvolari vs Varzi, epic battle!

:D

This is the race where I miss Kubica the most.
The tought of him, Alonso and Rosberg battling out for pole together just excites me. They can all do an almost perfect lap here almost catapult the barriers. I've watched Kubica's qualifying lap from last year at least 20 times.

Should be a very interesting Quali :)

Anyone know the approx. dropoff for the super softs?

I want to say about 13-15 laps maybe?

Maybe Rosberg will get his victory this Sunday?

If he does I'm going to jump through the roof. The boy has so much talent, it's about time he gets to drive a car in which he can fight alongside the big guns.

He is also a very charismatic driver, something you can hardly say about Vettel or Hamilton.
