Well, that's pretty encouraging from my point of view. I'd expect Spengler and Tomczyk to be further up, but they may be concentrating on race set-up over qually - I wouldn't have expected Werner to be the fastest BMW. Solid job by Priaulx, I'm desperately hoping Joey puts in a good performance also - I really like him after Sebring this year! I'd have though Farfus might have done a little better too, at least in the 1:34's.. but nevermind. Congrats to Ekstrom for pole. I can't wait for the race.

Considering this was BMW's first ever qualifying session after 20 years, it's a very good result! Originally, I expected the BMWs to be somewhere down and out of the top-10 positions as shown during the Friday test but comes Saturday, the car was so much on pace and Werner in 3rd place starting grid really says it all!

Now, I just hope the stream works for tomorrow!

Well, as a BMW fan, like yourself, I don't really dare to imagine that we could be contesting for wins from the first race of the season. But, let's not forget, the cars are new for everyone this year, and despite the bodyshells, there isn't alot between the cars performance wise. BMW probably have the strongest driver line-up, although not necessarily with much experience on the DTM circuits. Schnitzer and RBM know how to win major series... actually when you look at it BMW have a great overall package (as well as the best looking cars on the grid ;p).. so who knows what we can expect. With 4 Bimmers in the top 10, including Spengler and Tomczyk, as long as we don't fluff the pit-stops, I'd be hoping for a podium place.

Why is it surprising? It's a spec series mate. The only difference between them is bodywork and the engines, and two of the makes share the same engine.

For me BMW have the advantage of a much stronger driver line up.

I can't see anyone outside of Green and Paffett winning for Mercedes, or Ekström or Scheider for Audi this season. I can see lots of BMW drivers that can win though.

Yes mate, very well said. The pit stop is where all the nerves are. Obviously these BMW teams have never done a quick pit stop in a race condition but they're professionals anyway. I expect them to get a hang of it pretty quickly and surely they've done a number of practise during the off-season.

I know it's a spec series and all mate but out of all the teams, the BMW teams are probably the most inexperienced and out of all the BMW drivers, only 2 of them have driven in DTM previously and obviously know all the procedures despite having an all strong driver line up. Not that I'm absolutely surprised by the result but able to pull everything pretty quickly is pretty impressive.

The race is where it all counts. Well, obviously.

I'm excited to have BMW join the series and hope they do well. I don't think BMW should have much trouble competing early on. Especially Spengler and Tomczyk. I'm sure they've given alot of insight to the other teams as well. But I'm a Mercedes fan til the end. looking forward to the races.

Race is on!

Poor start for BMW... GRRRR

So I'm watching the stream in German, and all I keep thinking is KUBELSCHREIBER!

Some great driving by Green and Paffet, but it looks like the BMW's have got targets painted on them! Priaulx looks like the only one that's not had contact so far.... c'mon ANDY!

Fantastic bumper-cam shots from Priaulx's car.

🤬

Grrr....

Priaulx was unlucky today. His pitstops cost at least one place, maybe two.

I really hoped for BMW to finish at least in the top 3 on their return. Sadly too much shoving on the more experienced DTM drivers. Nice win by Mercedes, they really slapped Audi in the face with their 1-2 finish. On to Lausitz!

Well, fundamentally the BMW's aren't off the pace. Had Tomczyk and Spengler stayed in the race I'm sure the situation wouldn't have looked so bad for the BMW's. I need to see some more replays to see what went on but I think Tomczyk retirement was pretty unlucky, and Bruno was 'F'ing' his head off after his collision!

Andy's 7 second stop probably didn't help, but he's a good solid racer and kept his head, it looked like he was chasing down Rockenfeller at the end, but I'm not sure he would have caught him even given another 5 laps.

I've no idea what Farfus was doing in the pits, but I assume that's what he got the drive through for but at least he was in the top 10 at one stage. Hand and Werner were also unlucky getting tagged, although Werner got a rubbish start anyway.

I have to admit I'm disappointed in the result, but mostly it was down to bad luck and getting caught up in accidents.

Congrats to Mercedes though, Paffett and Green did some nice side by side racing... and congrats to Paffett for the win.

I am very dissapointed with what happened to the BMWs in this race. I think the lack of experience like the pit stop and a fault with Farfus' stop was forgivable but the BMWs bring taken out in a race is absolutely ridiculous and unforgivable. Bruno and Tomczyk have the rights to say whatever they wanted to and I agree 100% with Bruno.

In total, 4 BMWs were taken out from what could've been a strong race. I am absolutely dissapointed. But whatever happened, I am happy with Priaulx's effort putting them into 6th place.

Mercedez took off BMW like flies in the first lap... Im really disapointed with Ralf... what an idiot and he still managed to get into the points after his penalty (he should have seen two IMO)

This. Also, I wanted to know actually what happened to Werner because after that spin by Ralf, he was so far down the order and being lapped by the 2 faster Mercedes.

It looked like he had rear end damage, the team did have to do some repair work on the car. Possibly it was an aero issue.

The Audi that hit Hand (Mortara) got a penalty for spinning him too, but I'm not sure how good Hands pace was anyway.

I think that might be the reason why because clearly the right rear of the BMW was damaged - possibly much more severe because that car had no pace whatsoever.

Yeah, I did catch Mortara getting a penalty for that just right before Wickens also came in to serve his own penalty. Hand's pace was good in the early part as he was running together with Farfus but the camera never caught him anymore, thus having no clear look into his actual pace.

Really wish I could have saw this race. I'm very excited about the result seeing Paffet and Green 1-2! I'm sorry to hear about the bad luck of BMW though. Anyone know where or when we can rewatch the race?

Paffett and Green pretty much walked away from the rest of the field. Good clean racing by them two, side-by-side through the corners at times.

I'm wondering now if the 6 BMW's versus the 8 Audi's and 8 Merc's is going to mean that BMW will always lose out when it comes to attrition. Maybe we need ROAL, Engstler or even Alpina to run a couple of cars to run defense for Tomczyk and Spengler!

To answer a few questions.

Farfus got his drive-trough for speeding in the pits.
Werner had to stop after his spin and because it was before the pitstop window had opened he still had to do his 2 stops.

I am very lucky cause I'm from germany and can watch the races live on TV :)

I am very lucky cause I have internet and found a live feed :D

Mortara got a drive through penalty when he was 6 or 7th for causing a colision exactly the same as the one Ralf got away with (with one small difference -Ralf took 2 cars out in is first unpenalized colision and Mortara only took one)

Yes here. 1st video option down in the middle of the screen. Commentary in German.

http://www.sportschau.de/dtm/

I've just seen in the BTTC coverage that the DTM race with be shown at 10:30 AM next week on ITV4. No idea if it's all the race or, more likely, highlights.

Thank you very very much. I have it loaded up now and will watch it in a couple of hours when I shouldn't have any distractions. I really appreciate it.

Do you know if this site usually has the races immediately follwoing the live feed like this?

Yes it does but there is usually a variable delay until it becomes available after the live event finishes.

It's only available for a limited time though so don't delay watching for too long.

I've always watched it the same day so I don't know how long before it's removed.

Just a correction on the pitstop of farfus.
He thought his team was ready for him but it wasn't and so they weren't outside the garage and he had to do another stop

I can't wait to see how Joey Hand does. Did he race today? I saw an interview. Was he doing the full schedule?

nitrorocks

I too am hoping joey does well, but this weekend his pace wasn't the best and he got hit and spun. Actually he was the second placed BMW, but given the way the race panned out that doesn't say much.

I believe he's a full-time DTM driver.
