Technically they could. If hypothetically Pirelli just said no or a deal couldn't be reached F1 would be in limbo. They would need someone to supply them and if nobody would do it without a clause that said they won't supply heavily degrading tyres FOM would have to take it.

I don't know I'm not really one for predictions but I'm just going on previous form and Alonso's quick starts.

Will be all about who can look after the tyres best in race and that can depend on how track temperature is tomorrow. Hoping that both Mercedes drivers have good race pace relatively to others.

What was interesting to see is the late downshifts on pole lap. I have used this technique on rFactor before to make braking easier. Things I think it will help in real life with current F1 regulations is less chance of lock-up and tyres overheating over the lap which also will help do a faster lap but also help at start of race if starting on same set of tyres as it means less degradation. Also it will help gearbox and engine related parts as less stress is probably put on them parts using such technique.

Ted Kravitz in practice said he had been practicing this technique to help him save fuel so he may have been slightly underfuelled for his quali lap.
