Well two red bull sponsored cars cause two sessions to end prematurely for this Quali. And it was looking to be a good one too, very underwhelmed. Good to see Kvyat okay.

It wouldn't have happened, but there's also no reason to be running that wide at the entry of that corner like he did.

There isn't, but it seemed like he was frustrated to begin with all through out the Quali, and that just seemed to show a rushed timed lap. I feel he couldn't get into rhythm with the car like he was in the wet.

The most leet driver ever.

My heart stopped there for a moment. Kvyat is very lucky but that was a bit foolish of him letting the car drift that far out. That's not an area you'd expect someone to crash save for a mechanical issue.

And if that was tarmac run off, he would have rolled back onto the track and into the path of the other car. The gravel actually prevented a bigger crash.

How so? All that grass and gravel wouldn't be there and the crash probably wouldn't have happened at all.

Fortunately Kvyat is fine. I like having gravel/grass run-off. It punishes mistakes - if it were Fuji Speedway drivers could get away with being twenty metres off the track.

Anyway, had the session finished there could've been a much more shaken up result to qualifying.

I don't mind the tarmac runoff areas.. there just needs to be more than astroturf or painted tarmac between the track and off-track to keep the drivers from abusing track limits so much.

He wouldn't have slowed it down anywhere near as much to prevent a crash. Would have been a harder hit, as the car wouldn't have dug in and turned around as it did in the gravel. Granted, the car might not have rolled if there was tarmac there.

With tarmac there, he would have hit that wall hard, the tyres, assuming he slowed it down enough, would have still been attached, and he would have rolled it down into the path of another car, which was coming and coming fast. There also wouldn't have been dust to warn that driver behind Kyvat of the crash.

That's assuming the grass would have still been there, and had there been tarmac run-off, it most likely wouldn't have been grass at that part of the track.

The grass and gravel dissipated a vast amount of the energy. Modern cars can withstand rolls. Having any kind of tarmac there would've meant that the tyre wall would've had to dissipate virtually all the force, and that wouldn't be pleasant.

The tire wall still had to disperse most of the energy. He went off onto wet grass.. there's no slowing down on that when you're at high speed.

We aren't debating his mistake of running on the grass. It's whether tarmac or gravel could've done a better job. Having grass at the side of a track near a corner is something every track has, unless, of course, you want to pave away all the grass. That's just over sterilizing tracks.

Exactly. The grass was wet. If that would have been dry, it probably wouldn't have happened. You can't do anything about whether the grass is wet or not. It's a knee jerk reaction if you want to get rid of all grass and put tarmac down.

With tarmac he would have just the the tyres head on, as the gravel spun the car sideways. There aren't many tyres there, so it would have been a big mess.

As much as Rosberg whinges, he definitely does knuckle down and do the hard yards analyzing data and the like behind the scenes, in comparison to his teammate.

Horner said Kvyat may have to start from the pitlane tomorrow since apparently they must build a spare tub for him.
Yes, that is the case if they use the spare chasis, which Horner has said they probably will.
