Oh okay, I thought you talk about the lap times. Last year Porsche only hat a LeMans trim so it is no surprise they are slower. Toyota will most likely test their LeMans spec tomorrow, so we should see some higher speeds. Aren't lmp1 cars limited to 340 km/h in the rules? I remember hearing something like this on last years LeMans coverage.

Probably gear limited, short ratio box which means you get to vmax quicker then just defend like mad when the other longer ratio cars catch up as your pretty much on the limiter.

@Furinkazen and @hsv can testify this works really well in a Range Rover evoque....... Just saying.

Unsurprisingly, the Z4 looks smexy in Marc VDS colors.
 
French press reports I have seen say the ACO is to build more pit garages for 2016, which will mean a grid of 60 (!) possible for the 24 Hours.
 
Out of interest, if the number of pit garages were not an issue, how many vehicles would be the practical limit to have running at Le Mans in terms of safety and what have you?
 
I don't know if they will get 60. They've barely had enough entries to get 55 with all the teams entering then dropping out. They've been to the very bottom of the waiting list and had less than 55 each of the last 2 years with carnage leading up to the race. I don't think it will change anything

Well, its virtually impossible to miss now (Not that it ever was, but it definitely will be more noticeable.

Wow one year, and you act as if this is going to be a constant issue. Considering prior years they've done just fine meeting their goal. And they didn't seem to have too much trouble replacing those who did drop out. It's not the ACO's fault that some factory and privateers had financial issues or other issues all at the same time.

2013, they had zero reserves left. 2012 same thing if I remember correctly. Lots of teams submit then don't get the immediate acceptance and the renters back out. Others, like you are saying, have issues. I don't think a full 60 car grid will be achieved consistently or regularly with the current cost model. Maybe when the extremely spec 2017 rules come out, that will change, but it's yet to be determined although we all have an idea of what's coming. I'd love to see 80+ cars out there. They could get 30 LMP2 and LMP3 with the new rules. That would be awesome.

Time and time again you've shown that you don't even know what the hell that cost model is, which yet again is your angle to denounce the race because you think as you've seemed to from the start of joining this topic that only one group can obtain such numbers. IMSA isn't the only one and to be frank you haven't looked at the other things like LMP3 and more uniform rules that allow for easier access or or straight forward LMP2 projects across the board.

The only model that is obscene in cost is P1 and then GTE since it is essentially a development class (the difference between it and GT3). Also who cares who submits what, you submit on the onset that someone may drop out and you get picked up by the ACO to join. However the spots are usually filled by the invitation to actually go to the race. I'm sure someone like @Furinkazen can better explain this too you in what you're missing. But the ACO hasn't had issues to the extent you seem to be on about. And the race still ends up being the biggest race of the year internationally.

I'm not getting across to you here: Just because there's a full grid doesn't mean it's not a good race or any less important. All I'm saying is that the ACO opening 5 more garages doesn't mean they'll be all filled. That's not a bad reflection on anyone. I'm simply saying that it's a crapload to race and it will be the biggest endurance race on the planet to most regardless if there's 5 or 500 cars there. I think with the 2017 rules, there is the potential for 100+ entries turned in by 2019 or 2020 assuming the cost controlling methods work. Question is: will they open more spots up for more cars or keep it at 55 or 60

Sure it is, cause you took a moment of time where they had some setbacks and then compounded it into this indirect notion that they shouldn't bother then. When if they had reserves last year and the teams they had invited did actually race, then surely they would have no problem filling those slots. You see how taking a blip of data from a field isn't proper reasoning or argument to a project idea. How is that a question, you seem to be changing your direction from what you initially stated, where the issue takes place and that's filling 60 spots.

There is nothing indicating that they don't have the ability to have sixty spots filled.

There's nothing indicating that you and I don't have the ability to field 60 cars each in the LM24 either by what you and I both have said. I'm just giving a mildly sarcastic opinion based on the past few years. No full grid in 2014. No reserves in 2013 and 2012 by race time. That's all the recent data I need to predict that there may and probably will be issues filling 60 if there has been no hoping for a w/d in the wings the past 3 years by race time with a 55 car cap.

Um, you're wrong though, there were 3 reserves left in 2012 and also a reserve left in 2013. The only trouble year I see so far is 2014. All recent years indicate an ability to field a full field. Also you seem to think that the 10 car reserve will stay and wont increase with as well with the entry list amount being accepted.

But will it? That's what I don't know and haven't read or heard anything otherwise. Not eliminating that possibility, but will 5 extra teams come up for reserves. Will there be more cars that submit an entry? Maybe.

I can't see 60 cars being an issue, the 3 Nissans and the extra Porsche for this year make up 4. If Toyota brings a 3rd car next year you have your 5 extra.

At any point those factory entries can be gone. They're not the long term solution because of that. This year and probably next year, yea they'll be the extra 5, but can we count on all of them staying?

@aarror easily helped you and that's before we start talking, hypothetical like the potential of Ford, the LMP3 cars that come along and so on.

You have all the answers I suppose? No one is saying that this is a infinite solution, but the ACO isn't saying that the 60 is a forever number they could make it lower if they don't think the 60 is safe enough to them or if they feel that it's too ambitious, or whatever other reason. What is told to you is that the numbers you seem to be running on are 2014 and then using that model for this year or some future year, but when you add in what was just given it's not an issue. Do it for those years you claimed no reserves remained (though they had them) then it becomes even more of a non-issue.

Also can we count on the sky staying in the sky 3 months from now? It's a bit loaded question to ask to what extent you can count on scenario A, B, or C occurring. It could also be said that someone more come along and either replace them or just expand the fields of P1 and GTE

I personally think that everyone who submits an entry should be allowed in. I think capping a race at a track that's 8.5 miles long to 56 cars is stupid. That's my honest opinion. They have plenty of room for the extra space.
