I don't really understand the whole following drivers only from a certain manufacturer, I remember back when Courtney was racing for Ford with SBR and DJR (I liked him straight away since he was an Australian who was just in the JGTC or Super GT as it's known now). After he left to go to HRT it's not like everything I liked about him just disappeared, I wasn't a huge fan of Whincup when he drove for Ford either. Following your favorite drivers shouldn't just stop because they changed what car they're driving
It's kind of like football, as like Jerry Siegnfeld put it "It's all about the shirt".

You see your favourite driver/player from your favourite marque/team be transferred to your least favourite marque/team, your favourite now works for the enemy, so do you now root for the enemy or do you boo the driver/player because he's wearing a different shirt.

Australia is a crazy environment, the sports we grow up with are AFL, NRL and Supercars which all 3 have a massive team implications. Usual racing fans might not understand as racing series like NASCAR, GT3, BTCC and F1 don't really care for the marque but here we were sort of taught to pick a side when Holden vs. Ford started, especially since how easy it is to root for a marque than a driver. If I only cared about the drivers I don't think I'd ever watch Endurance racing, since they not only have to share a car they can also not be in every race meaning it is very likely your favourite driver won't be anything special in the series.

I understand following a team (say HRT, Prodrive, BJR etc.) I don't understand following a manufacturer, I know people who went from liking to hating Courtney not from moving from SBR to DJR, but from DJR to HRT because of the change in what's basically a chassis they drive. That's the part I don't understand, especially now when half of the field are Holden chassis

because moving from teams doesn't really mean anything special if you're in the same car, it's the same thing just in different colours. Switching teams is kind of like switching positions within a team in the AFL/NRL, the change isn't really that special since it kind of is the same

Feels a lot more different to change brands, new people, car and organization to work with. People like to support that aspect. It really doesn't matter of the numbers. Remember when DTM didn't restrict manufacturers on cars back in the early 2000's and most people just ran Mercedes? DTM was still big on marque,

As I posted earlier, I'm loyal to certain drivers & will follow them wherever they go - within reason.
For example: if Lowndes wasn't offered another contract by 888 for 2018 & beyond, and chose to drive for LDM just to continue, I couldn't support that at all. Game over.

To me, it's completely different when it comes to AFL.
I'm a fourth generation Carlton Blues supporter & there is no other option.
I'm not crazy about everyone in the team & if you leave, I'll quote David Reynolds.
"You're dead to me Bro."

Jenson Button. Hayden Paddon. Scott McLaughlin. Colin McRae. Sébastien Loeb. And plenty more.

Well, that just makes him boring. There's more to life than motorsport.
I haven't read the whole convo, but I need to stop here and call you on your bull-hucky PM. This is rediculous.

You spend how much of your free time on Motorsports forums and websites? You follow how many different forms of racing???

Yet because SVG choses to race other things like GT cars, WTA cars, drifting, etc., in his spare time, that makes him boring??????? What. The. 🤬

Hamilton avoids racecars away from a GP weekend like the plague - he's a playboy in it for the fame and glory, not for the racing. SVG races anything he can get his hands on - that's one dimensional and boring. Haters gonna hate

When you decide you don't like someone, you will really go to any and all lengths to justify not liking them eh? It's really quite entertaining

I stayed away from this thread to avoid spoilers, but as soon as I'd caught up on the races and saw the way SVG utterly dominated the entire weekend, I laughed to myself imagining the amount of anti-SVG belly aching that would be going on

This is pretty much the only one. And sure, I post here pretty regularly, but I contribute to other sites unrelated to motorsport as well. Motorsport is definitely my main interest, but I couldn't talk about it all day long.

Fair enough, but I don't think anyone could talk about the same thing all day, SVG included. Anyways it doesn't matter, I was just having a little go at you for fun, not serious :P

That's why Hamilton like other forms of racing too...and has even tested other racing vehicles.

He's not in it for the fame and money, he actually likes racing and has other desires as well, like music. I didn't realize that every driver should aspire to be an SVG in this world.

I used to like Shane Van Gisbergen. But the fact that he now drives for the "Red Bull Holden Racing Team", a team which has won 7 of the last 10 championships, really annoys me. I HATE 888 Race Engineering with a passion, and Jamie Whincup for that matter. It doesn't matter if the regulations change, they still dominate. It's time some other team started winning...

I'm not saying I don't like Lowndes, he is one of my favourite drivers. Just that he said he hates T8 with a passion.

A large majority of people hate T8 but love Lowndesy. It's a damn shame that he's still there, but it's also a testament to his loyalty, more that can be said for another member of that team...

Hates 888 Race Engineering with a passion. Has 888 in his username :odd:

@NW48 if you're talking about Ludo. That's probably the best thing for Supercars at the moment we need another team to challenge the T8 empire and Ludo will help DJRTP do that.

Yes! The best thing, actually, was Roger Penske saving DJR. Especially Penke's commitment. Would have been awesome for both Team Penske V8 teams to win over the weekend.

Just as a reminder, Inside Supercars is back tomorrow. Giz will be in with McLaughlin.

No, its not about Ludo. It was about Van Gisbergen though.
I have to admit, I was surprised after winning the 12hr with McLaren, he didn't choose to defend the 'title' with them.
There's probably more to that decision than I/we know about but when the Merc deal was announced.... :odd:

Yeah. Totally surprised he didn't run with his teammates in the 488. Would have made sense. Yes?

I was also referring to him bailing on SBR claiming to retire due personal issues, then miraculously have them solved shortly after and signing with Tekno.

Maybe but I thought he'd go with the McLaren crowd thanks to winning all he did with them in 2016.
If he wasn't going with them, then my next preference would've been for them all to team up in the red car.
Either way, Lowndes won so I'm happy.

I don't have a problem with that at all.
He signed a 3-year contract to drive Fords for the Stone Brothers not Mercs for some blow-in. If that's not an 'out clause', I don't know what is.

It's obvious why though, cause that's the number Lowndes runs, not anything to do with the team.
That'd be the same team that rescued Lowndes from the disaster that was FPR, has made him the most successful driver in the category & helped him win multiple Bathurst crowns.
As a Lowndes loyalist myself, I give 888 all the credit they deserve even if it's been hard to watch Whincup win all the titles.
That team has gone from Ford to Holden, had key staff members leave in Campbell Little, Burgess & Jeromy Moore, adapted to the new COTF best of all & this weekend just gone, won on new rubber.
Their biggest challenges ahead are doing without Ludo & starting fresh with the new 'Commodore' in '18.
Let's see how they go but the cream always rises to the top.

So you're cool if someone fakes serious personal issues just to get out of a contract?

No one is angry at him for leaving SBR because the team was undergoing a massive change, everyone is angry at how he did it. I would be cool with it if he came out and said "I want out because 'x' reason and I also don't want to drive a Merc because it'll be a pile of 🤬 " Instead of essentially taking the crap out of anyone who's had those problems, and signing with another team.

I'm well aware, what I'm saying is you can be a fan of a driver and despise the team they race with, he has the name because of the legacy that will be Craig Lowndes. As you pointed out that legacy just so happens to be with Triple8, which is his most well known stint in the series. Obviously just having Lowndes wouldn't be clear enough to those who saw the user name, thus 888 was attached so if someone looks it up, they'll see a well seasoned Australian Racer.

SVG didn't race a McLaren at Bathurst because McLaren wanted to use their 2017 factory drivers. SVG isn't a factory MacLaren driver this year because there is too much conflict between the Supercars and Blamcpain schedules in 2017.

SVG had previously driven for the Weathertek team in the USA, using Porsches in the past. For 2017, Weathertek decided to switch to running a Merc. They also talked to SVG about running additional races in America after Daytona, he agreed (since he had free time from not being with McLaren).

Pretty sure the fact that he ended up in a Merc and not a McLaren is just the way things worked out.

You the team that complety changed on him just after he signs a contract.

He didn't bail SBR it was the other way around.

In addition, Scott Taylor wanted him and did everything he needed to to get him for the 12hr.

As I've said before, I would've got out of that deal anyway possible. People also need to take into account SVG's Dad Robert plays a big part in his management.
Also, I can easily imagine being in SVG's shoes, having just signed a deal for it all to change on him would have to give him more than a headache.

Correct 👍

Slade and Holdsworth stayed. Their sticks weren't bad. At the time, SBR were going strength to strength. May have gotten a C'hip in 2013 if they stayed as Fords.

The problem was, the drivers didn't know what cars they'd be driving until that September? He did explain in one of the posts we previously viewed. Another thing, it wasn't like the E63 itself failed. It won more races and scored podiums and top 10 finishes, than other teams in its 3 years.

Regardless, I respect the man's skills. He drives like he's against AI. While everyone follows the racing line, he places the car when e none expects a pass. Some work and some are cheeky. But he gets on with it.

I hope this new tyre helps with the nature of Albert Park. More grip in and out of turns, will make passing more common. As well as the short races won't impact on tyre life. So, hopefully, baring spins, the whole grid will be tight start to finish.
