Just saw it last night in 3D

NO SPOILER QUICK REVIEW

Story: 3/10

Characters: 4/10

Art Direction: 8/10

Visual Effects: 10/10

The Good: Cameron makes great use of 3D throughout the film, taking action/epic filmmaking to the next level and giving jaded audiences a wholly new experience to enjoy. The sense of scope and grandeur is in full effect here. Numerous times during the film I was smiling with child-like wonder at the lushly realized world. Action scenes are tight and full of satisfying punch.

The Bad: Dances with Wolves. In a jungle. With helicopters. And with less than half the sense of a personal journey deftly told with, charm, humor and ultimate poise of Costner's shining moment.

The Verdict: Needs more Michelle Rodriguez in form fitting tank top.

Overall: 8/10 (6/10 if you're watching the 2D version)

It's my sci-fi movie, but I heard it is similar to Dances with Wolves (Though I have never seen that movie...). It looks great in 3D. I give it an 9.5/10.

I went to see it tonight in 3D and loved it to bits. The story was simple but the characters were built up nicely, and the way the story was told was simply breathtaking in places. The effects made my hairs stand on end several times and the 3D works so well it's ridiculous. I also saw the Alice in Wonderland trailer in 3D and can't wait for that!

9/10

PS. Please say I'm not the only one who found Neytiri hot?

LMAO @ the Michelle Rodriguez comments.

I thought the CG looked pretty horrible in the trailers & TV spots I've caught. But then again, they were all horrible quality for some reason(Edit: the trailers).

After so many "epic" takes in this thread, I might have to go check it out now. Some friends wanted to go see this on the new year's eve, but I cancelled to play CoD Modern Warfare 2 online instead. :p

They're absolutely brilliant, especially in 3D. During one section when they reveal a new location (You'll know what it is when you see it, it has an interesting waterfall) it was genuinely breathtaking and had me gawping at the screen. Then they proceeded to take it even further by having interactions with that scenery, changing the movement, lighting, everything.

How the hell they even rendered some of the scenes I can't fathom.

I wouldn't say I found her hot, but indeed attractive. I mean, at first, most of the girls I fell in love with seemed ugly to me. But when I started loving them, I found them to be beautiful.[/IRRELEVANT]

Saw this movie yesterday with my brother. We were originally going to see it in 3D (I didn't wanted to, I had a headache and I knew 3D would only make it worse). Luckily, there weren't 3D for the rest of the weekend, so we saw it in 2D. Gotta say it was amazing, I can't begin to imagine how awesome must have it been had we watched it on 3D.

I stopped trying. Then after another thirty minutes of watching live actors interact seamlessly with CGI, I'm hit with a bad case of "I can't believe it's not real butter!"...

But they used some mock-ups and green-screen stand-ins for some of the props to allow the actors to interact with them in a more natural way... including full-sized mock-ups of the battle-suit cockpits.

The CGI effect that impressed me the most (besides the endless scenes of action in the jungle) is the CGI used to give Jake withered legs.

Forrest Gump made do with deleting Gary Sinise's legs through CGI, but you could see how the weight balance was off in some of the scenes (it was great CGI for the time, though...) but pasting crippled legs onto Sam Worthington? Seamless. Incredible.

Worthington has pants on most of the time, but if you've seen him in Terminator, you know that his real legs wouldn't fit under those pants or make the same skinny profile.

It was only when he went out in shorts at one point in the film that I realized that here was a piece of CGI I'd been ignoring all film long!

Same happened to me (along with the rest of the people at the cinema, everyone saying "look at his legs!). It was so believable, that I actually went to Wikipedia to see if he was really paraplegic.

So I've attempted to see this movie for the past three nights and every time it's sold out. I'm pretty close to giving up on this one.

Can't you make a call and reserve tickets over where you live?
I went yesterday and I'm glad I reserved because it was sold out. The system in that cinema even crashed haha. I was lucky they had a backup with my name on it.

Only for the regular theatres, not IMAX movies. And if I'm going to see Avatar it's going to be in IMAX.

I never been to Imax I think. Yesterday was a room like any other, but bigger, but the screen was not all around you like in IMAX. But for me it was a good enough experience. If you go to a theater that has 3D and you get seats near the front I think that would be good enough. I was called expotheater. 160m2 screen and the newest sound system in the whole of europe. Sounds good for a little country like Holland doesn't it? :)

I'd recomend doing the "regular" 3D before doing the IMAX 3D. Simply put, you're going to be able to see more of what Cameron did instead of being overwhelmed by the size of everything that's in your face. Otherwise, I totally agree with wanting to see it in IMAX. I've been looking to get tickets as well, but they sell out here every night, many times DAYS in advance. I'll hop that train in a bit, otherwise, I'd be satisfied with "regular" 3D once more.

I have weird work schedule, so I have Tuesday off this week. If Joey's right, it might be a pain to get tickets on nights, weekends, but I might try to go catch it on Tuesday, during the day. It sounds very good. 👍

Edit: I had an IMAX theater not even 10 minutes from where I work, I had no idea. I will be trying to see this on Tuesday!

Oh wow his legs were CGI in that movie? I noticed they were very very tiny. Holy crap I thought maybe he just didnt work his legs or didnt walk on his legs for many months to make them that tiny. But dang if those were CGI crippled legs then that impresses me even more at the CGI in this movie. 👍

Have you seen Terminator Salvation? His legs were much more muscular & healthy looking than in Avatar.

Yes I know but I have seen a few of the director pics and even while the director is talking to him the legs look very tiny. How much time was there between Avatar and Terminator??? If it really is inded CGI then I am just even more impressed with the movie. But if he had quite a bit of time between avatar and terminator, his legs could shrink a lot if not used.

This and that.

I just got back from seeing it and I'm completely blown away by it. Easily and by far the best movie I've seen lately (Does it beat District 9? I'm inclined to say hell yes!)

The scenery and special effects, as well as how the characters were made up, is just out of any league. The fact that the movie has been in the works since 1994 really shows, it got me glued to the screen during the entire length of the movie. But I thank God that Michelle Rodriguez only had a tiny role in this movie, as her acting is below crap. Only one scene I didn't like was the typical American army captain jumping out of an exploding plane. Kind of reminded me of Bruce Willis' Die Hard 4 plane scene. But other than that I must say that this move is beyond epic.

I done did it. IMAX 3D, and it was a first 3D in a long time. Boy, has it come a long way. 👍

First, the major flaw. Before people jump on me, this was a flaw to me. Chances are, only to me. I didn't care for the Na'vi(natives) design. Too cartoony. CG on that end also didn't impress me. Skin texture, especially. Having said that though, I thought the CG in this film, overall, blew pretty much everything away.

On stuff I found OK in the film. I found the plot unique enough. Familiar tone in the story didn't bother me, but it's not great. Acting was bit weak. I especially expected more out of Sigourney Weaver, I regard her pretty highly.

Finally, stuff that impressed me. Fight scenes, actions sequences, I'm usually unfairly critical on. I love action movies, yet, when I see a cookie cutter Hollywood action flick, I usually follow the action with my eyes rolled up. In Avatar, I loved the fighting & action. Amazing CG, SFX, whatever. Like Bram, that scene with the Colonel I also thought were bit silly. Loved the ships, gunships and other weaponry.

Bottom line, this film stirs you. I think everyone hopes to see films that can do that to you. In that sense, it's definitely an special film. I spent $15.50 for the IMAX ticket, and it was probably around $25 with the hotdog & soda, but I'm glad I went. :)

P.S. I went at 11 a.m. on a Tuesday. I got there 5-10 minutes before showtime, and the place was packed! I couldn't believe it, but I guess all the advertising combined with the word of mouth is selling this thing out. I thought I was going to be the only one in the theater, I had to sit three rows from the front. I did not see that coming.

They are CGI.

I saw an interview on Australian chat show Rove and he walked on stage. Was ages ago, and I was trying to piece the puzzle together because it was way before christmas when I saw the interview, I was sure that he was doing Avatar (because he was Australian) and I knew he walked on stage, so yes, the legs must be CGI.

This and that. :p I loved District 9, easily the best movie I had seen in a cinema prior to watch Avatar. Curiously enough, my brother is the one who took the initiative to watch both.

One of the things that amuses me is that despite all the millions he has recently made, Sam Worthington still sleeps on his mate's couches. I know I'd do the same until I could come to better grips with newfound stardom. Anyways, bring on the next two sequels! :)

I just saw avatar and thought it was fairly good. I would give it an 8.5/10.
It is simply awe inspiring how beautiful the movie looks in glorious 3D as well, it was something special!
I can't help feeling it is a wee bit like The Matrix though... Only slightly though.
Very enjoyable! 👍
