Beater or Sleeper? GT6 Car of the Week Thread

Sorry I missed the racing... was burnt out and fell asleep before I usually do. Sad, because I wanted to see how it would handle. Oh well, another chance on Saturday anyways.

Cheers
Don't worry about it, I just assumed that your controller was wanting to be like a ferrari and catch fire like it tried to before. :D

One thing I'm started to notice over the last few weeks is this, if i'm anywhere near @Nismonath5 on the last lap of a race he'll buckle and wipe out in one form or another. :P

Twice at Monza when we drove the F430 S and the Caddy Coupe and spoiler alert, last night at Le Mans driving a Corvette (in hindsight that was tempting fate given what happened to Chevy at Le Mans this year. :sly:).

Chop busting aside, I think @JackRyanWMU's eventual review will answer a few questions as to how the GT500 was. ;)

I'm pleased that someone has superseded me as the "head buckler"

The racing was relatively close last night, but some of us suffered from the Stang's significant understeer and lousy brakes. @JackRyanWMU set the bar for us with 2 back to back wins. @Nismonath5 almost got 2 wins too, but the Sarthe barricades at Arnage had a different idea. Just the sight of @Vic Reign93 in your mirror can induce unwanted levels of pressure.

Vic and I had a couple of great battles, if only because he was a grade down in tires. Side by side through Laguna's corkscrew was a hoot.

Just a little pic of the action:

Hey, hey, hey!!! ouch!

For a JDM kid, used to cars that can actually turn corners, I think I'm doing damn well wrestling these brutes! :P700bhp on comfort tyres, I was looking forward to LeMans, but wishing I hadn't downgraded my rubber, as @Draggon said the barriers seduced my Corvette and they went in for a kiss...:banghead:

Got some good footage, going to make some vids when I get a chance!

Videos!!!!

As well as a bonus clip about the "Low Beam Green Hell" challenge, something I challenged McD to acouple years back and figured I oughta do myself!

Was hoping to get a vid made of the battle between @Draggon and @Vic Reign93 at Laguna, but ran out of time. Maybe next week..
Just trying to pick the thumbnail...

Show me your muscles!!!!
With the power, torque, and sound to cause men all over to tremble...
Mid-Field Raceway_4.jpg

Basically the only three colours we saw on Tuesday night.

The Ford Shelby GT500 is nothing short of a brute. It's big, it's loud, and it's powerful. Very powerful. Just shy of 700bhp with an oil change, which is nothing to turn your nose up at. I picked this beast because I hoped that we would re-visit the fun we had in the Boss 302. Did we? I think so!

The first thing that's pretty cool about the GT500 is the value. At only $55,000 it has to be one of, if not the cheapest way to get behind the wheel of a supercharged 5.8 V8 producing 700bhp. Seriously, find me a cheaper way to get 700bhp, I'll wait...
It's quite a good thing that it's so cheap, because that means you'll have plenty of spare money for tyres. And boy, are you gonna need them! The GT500 only needs the lightest whiff of throttle to...
High Speed Ring.jpg

....oh, dang! I needed that set to last till Thursday!

If you can tame the beast, it's a weapon in a straight line. As with most muscle cars, acceleration is the strong point, with top speed following close behind. Handling however.... ha ha haaaa! Let's talk about the handling department. It weighs 1733kgs. Which is a lot. Even with a full weight loss package, it will still tip the scales at 1400-ish kg's. This means that it's a bit of a mongrel round corners, needing extreme care and much longer stopping distances. I was in a public lobby at Bathurst last night for a few hours, and I took the GT500 for a spin.
Despite practically tip-toeing up and down the mountain, I still beat the overall best time. But at the same time, I had to start braking well before The Chase if I wanted to make the corner! What that showed me was that the GT500 is effortlessly fast. Laps that look and feel very slow, full of braking and taking corners gently, can actually be record-breakers.

Mid-Field Raceway_3.jpg

The GT500's brakes work hard to bring the beast to a halt!

Mid-Field Raceway_5.jpg

Last lap, last corner dive for the win!

The racing action on Tuesday was exactly what I'd hoped for. Fast, close and fun! The raw sound of 3000+bhp thundering down the circuit and the battles that ensued.. On sport tyres it felt violent, wanting to wrestle you to the ground. Once I won at Mid-Field however, and had to downgrade to comfort tyres, it got even more restless and aggressive, robbing me of any more wins. However, the GT500 was more enjoyable to drive than the Boss, and now the two of them are in my favourites list! Thing is, the Boss, as you can imagine, isn't stock anymore. Hasn't been for a long time. So what to do to the Shelby? I'm thinking some weight loss, a decent suspension setup, meatier brakes... Power is not the issue, handling is! I'm gonna work on that.

I love the GT500, and it's ability even in stock form means I'm going to have fun figuring out the full potential of this weapon!
Sleeper! 👍

I'll be back soon with the next car!

Not sure if you guys have noticed, but we've spent the last few weeks wrestling American muscle. The Ram, the CTS-V, the Viper and the GT500... if not for the S.S. Trueno working it's way into the middle there, we'd be in need of an intervention!

But luckily, the Trueno broke the trend, so we don't need one.

...yet.

Anyways, this week's pick goes to a lesser known but just as dedicated member of Car Of The Week!
Congratulations @fabinator6!!!!

If you don't know, Fab Inator reviews and tests each COTW, running them around Mid-Field, compiling a leaderboard of lap times as he goes. The only twist is, he uses Gran Turismo 4...

So whenever we pick a car that's too new for GT4, he simply misses out. And lately, he's had a few weeks off, so to address that, he gets to pick this week!

What ? Really ?

Yes! And he's chosen...

1476733325-delorean.jpg

The DMC DeLorean S2 '04!!!!!

Flying cars will be excluded. This week's racing limited to 87mph. See you Tuesday! ;)

Does Jenny Craig help Ponies???

nH0uzUZ.jpg

Cause this Mustang NEEDS help... Morbidly Obese is the clinical term for this car. And of course with anything having this problem, stopping is an issue. Did they forget installing the proper brakes on this thing, or is it just too damn fat to stop it in the same postal code? Wow, sad just sad.

I've said it before... Carroll must be spinning in his grave about this one!

Beater and Forget'er

Cheers

Poor old Mustang Sally has been at the buffet too long. I tried to like this one. I try to like a lot of the cars in GT6. Unfortunately this is one of many that leaves me thinking that either PD got things all wrong, or why in the world would anyone buy this thing in real life. It's not that bad with some serious tuning, however, as we tested it. Ugh. At least it looks pretty in white with red stripes.

Beater.

Needs more Monster Energy Stickers...and a V-Tech sticker on top of the windshield.

I've never really "gotten" the Toyota Sprinter Trueno. Whenever it would appear on a list of "Most Iconic TV & Movie Cars" it would feel like a game of "Which of these things is not like the other" when the Sprinter appeared alongside the likes of the Trans-Am, the Charger, and the DB5. It's not particularly pretty nor overly powerful even in this "apex tuner culture" guise.

Driving it though, the car proved worthy of it's flat-billed ballcap wearer worshipers. The Sprinter is incredibly light and loose in the corners, few cars at this performance level require so much care with the throttle. A very definite Sleeper.

YHNW46f.jpg

At the end though, there was no epiphany for me. It's a very good car, but I still see it as "just a car" the same way I'd look at an old Ford Festiva as "just a car." Yes, I could probably outrun The Bandit with it. But I'd spend every moment wishing I was driving the Trans-Am.

(Pictures will be added when I find a new place to upload them. Photobucket now wants me to fork over money for the privilege of linking them to 3rd party sites. 🤬)

The first thing I noticed is that the car has no torque. It's like a Honda! But the weight and power figures are excellent. Compare with the base car:

127 hp / 6,500 rpm
110 ft-lb / 5,000 rpm
940 kg (2,072 lbs)
359 pp
16.3 lbs/hp

80 hp, 17 ft-lbs, and 115 kg (253 lbs) difference. Let's check their lap times and max speed at Mid-Field.

Back to the distant Future of the Past...

0ZC7upk.jpg

Made iconic in one of those movies that some Canadian kid made way back when, the DeLorean was front and center for some good things instead of the not so nice things that it garnered attention for in the first place. Marred by delays that even Polyphony Digital might deem too long, the car finally rolled out in 1981.

Y7rG0UZ.jpg

I must admit, I do like the looks of it... and having a famous designer's name attached to it certainly helped it out. Even with that, there were some things that didn't cut the mustard in most car guy's eyes, like the power, or lack there of. There were more powerful models made, but good luck getting one of those... there were only four Legend models as far as I know.

Here in GT6, it's ok. Nothing special in either it's stock form or tuned up. As stated in Saturday's racing, nothing justifies it's price. You can certainly get better bang for the buck cars elsewhere... but even so, I'm not willing to call it a Beater. We've seen worse here at COTW headquarters. Neutral status from yours truly.

It's about time...
Marty McFly's set of wheels goes under the COTW microscope!
City of Arts and Sciences - Night.jpg

No point sticking one in a car compacter. It's already pretty flat!

Does this thing even need an introduction? You already know this car as Doc Brown's time machine! And if you don't, then you know it as "that flying car off that movie about the future or something." Either way, you've definately seen this car! The DMC DeLorean! This wee was interesting for me because I learned things about this car. For example, look at this hood!

City of Arts and Sciences - Night_1.jpg

It's long, it's wide, it looks like there's heaps of space in there! So naturally, I just assumed there was a motor and gearbox under there!

But nope, as it turns out, that's all squeezed back here..
City of Arts and Sciences - Night_2.jpg

....which I suppose explains why all the time travel-y equipment was stuffed in the back in the films. Anyways, back on track with the review!
So yeah, this thing's rear engined and rear wheel drive. It pumps 217bhp out of a 2.8 V6, which isn't a lot at all, but with all the weight at the back, it can be a bit of a mission to keep it straight!

The races on Tuesday were pretty chaotic! Particularly at Apricot Hill and Brands Hatch, I found myself moving and shaking all throughout the field, bending some fenders (@RobboGTAddict bring your car over and I'll sign the damage!), and standing on the podium quite a few times! The DeLorean proved manouverable, but still displayed a wild streak. It was smoking tires round corners, cutting apexes, everything but spinning out completely! That was likely because of the lack of power, which on the flip side meant the racing was slow, but it was still enjoyable nonetheless!

The DeLorean comes only in one colour, and that's plain ol' stainless steel. Fear not, you can slap your own coat of premium quality paints! It's visual quality is pretty sub-par, with the rough edges you'd expect from a standard car. There are worse offenders though, so it's not all bad. At over half a million dollars, you'd really expect the full detailed package! it really doesn't deliver as far as bang-for-buck, in both performance or visual quality. It's a collector's piece, but it's the sort of collector's piece you still take for a playful hoon every once in a while.

It did prove to be quite the lively little throwaround, though! Might not win many races, but still fun to keep around. Enough so for me to call it a sleeper! 👍

Also, here are the results for the DeLorean's time trial... Last week saw the most drivers entered in a Playing With TT's event in months, let's keep that going! :D

The power to weight ratio is, well, not ideal. At least the car looks good, although I can't shake the image of 80's IROC Camaro's every time I see one.

I can't believe the IROC-Z Concept '88 is basically tied with the Delorean. Wow. Never noticed that before. Toyota MR2 is there as well as Lotus Elise, some good competition. I enjoy those cars more though. Much, much more, so I give this a beater rating.

Alrighty, time to announce the next Car Of The Week...

...But before that, there's a special announcement to make!

It's that time of the year again! Time to induct someone into the COTW Hall Of Fame! @Baron Blitz Red's been all on his little lonesome all year, and he needs some company! Now, aftermuch deliberation and consideration, this year's inductee is none other than...

244983.jpg

@Vic Reign93!!!!!!
This from Baron..
Not only is he our alien, winning more than anyone else in our history, but quite simply is a true trooper. He shows up week in, week out at ungodly times in the morning on North American Tuesdays, but has hosted countless times and is a mainstay providing entertainment in his posts.

I wasn't entirely surprised when Vic's name was proposed as the nominee. I don't think there's anyone here who hasn't witnessed first hand his flamboyant drifts, sheer speed and capability to be competitive even on comfort medium tyres or even hards! Congratulations Vic, and to top it off, what'll we drive this week?

I decided on a car from my birth year and we've actually tested this cars successors in both road and race trim.
Again with the birth year thing? Alright.

Couple that with the fact this car has a road and race version from the same year kinda made this a no brainer for me.

R32 N1.jpg

The 1993 Nissan Skyline GT-R (R32) Vspec N1!!!!

Vic has also requested that the '93 Calsonic GT-R makes a few cameo appearances, so make sure you have one in your garage ready to go! This week's Playing With TT's is already up, located at the Silverstone International circuit. And of course, see you guys on Tuesday!

Other cars, besides DMC-12, in the base game that were built with backbone chassis (not necessarily a complete list):
Alpine A110 1600S (2 altogether)
Alpine A310 1600VE '73
Lotus Elan S1 '62 *
Lotus Esprit (5 altogether)
Lotus Europa S.2 '68
Lotus Europa Special '72
Triumph Spitfire

* also the excluded M100

So that makes 13.

Well I do what I do, it just turns out I've done a lot for the group. :D

But in all seriousness, Many thanks to all who also make the effort to join in and have fun in the madhouse that can be the Car Of The Week Thread.

Sure some of you might secretly hope, "Does this mean you're gonna let others win?" Well....

If it ain't broke, Don't fix it. :sly:👍

Now I do believe I'm behind on the GT500 and the DMC-12. No better time like now to get them written up.

We'll start with the Live rear axle using, supercharger abusing Ford Shelby Mustang GT500.

Packing a near 700hp after oil changed 5.8 V8 with a Supercharger bolted on top, Its Lambo Aventador rivalling power is sent to the rear tyres via a 6 speed manual gearbox.

So power is there in spades, but the chassis and everything else is not all there.

The car weighs over 1.7 tons so stopping can be lengthy if you overestimate the braking power of the larger Brembo brakes equipped on the GT500, but nothing that can't be managed.

The suspension and weight distribution on the hand is barely manageable if you trying to drive this thing seriously as it understeers like nobodies business.

And if you're not driving it seriously, well...

Put it like this, it's a good car to go sideways in without much modifying. :P

And another thing to consider, it's cheap at 55k which gives it in terms of horsepower for the price a near impossible to catch lead. :)

Of course if you try and drive it more serious than what the car likes then you'll probably hate it with the previously mentioned understeer.

And if you decide to meet it halfway and drive it how it likes to be driven, then a lot of smokey tyre shredding fun times are in your future, just don't do it leaving Cars & Coffee. :D

And if you want to drive it seriously, then do what Shelby keeps doing and tinker with the tyres, suspension and even the weight and it'll serve you well.

But if someone offered me the keys to a GT500 and a GT350R, I'll still take the 350R as it's a modern Shelby Mustang done perfectly. 👍

Verdict: Netural( but for 55K, grab one anyways. ;))

Ok, Time for things to get heavy as I talk about the Delorean DMC-12 and to an equal extent, John Delorean himself.

After graduating from the Chrysler Institute with a masters degree in Automotive Engineering in 1952, John Delorean spent less than a year as part of Chrysler's engineering team when he was given a $14K salary at the Packard Motor Company.

Over the 4 years he was there, he improved his attention to engineering detail as well as Packard's "Ultramatic" automatic gearbox to such an extent it was launched as the "Twin-Ultramatic".

In 1956, he was offered a job in any of GM five divisions by then Vice president of GM engineering Oliver Kelley and John chose the Pontiac Division and 5 years later he was promoted to division chief engineer.

In 1964 John's most known creation at Pontiac was unveiled for the Pontiac Tempest/Le Mans, it was of course the GTO which was and still is considered to be the first proper Muscle Car, a car that we have tested IIRC in the past.

The GTO sold like hot cakes and 1965 John was promoted to the head of Pontiacs whole division, John Delorean was now the youngest ever division head at 40 years old and he was hitting the big time.

Over the next few years despite some internal resistance with a few other division heads, things were still looking good as cars like the Firebird and an all new version of the Grand Prix were being sold alongside the GTO and John's jet setting lifestyle and public appearances made sure that everyone knew he wasn't an ordinary conforming businessman.

In 1969 he was given yet another promotion and this time, it was to GM's flagship marque Chevrolet.

In short span of few years, he helped turn around the sales and in 1971 Chevrolet was experiencing record sales of well over 3 million and his division by itself was almost matching what the Ford Motor Company was doing as a whole.

After being promoted yet again to the position of Vice president of car and truck production for the whole of the GM line 1972, it seemed like the role of President was a matter of when, not if for John Delorean and some other GM executives took big issue with that.

A year later in 1973 on April 2nd, John Delorean announced he was leaving the company, but took on a presidency role at the National Alliance of Businessmen which GM was a major contributor to, but while he was there he was also planning his own motor company.

Delorean announced the DMC-12 some time afterwards, but due to production delays (among other things) the car wasn't sold until 1981 and this is when things started to go downhill big time.

The 1980 US recession coupled with not so great reviews by the public and critics alike for its low power and high price among other smaller things meant only 8,583 Delorean's were made before the company was put into receivership in February 1982 and for John Delorean, it was all about to go to hell in a hand basket.

In October that same year, John was arrested on drug trafficking charges with nearly 60 pounds of Cocaine, which was worth about 6.5 million dollars.

Now this is where things get screwy, the informant who tipped the FBI off about the deal was not reporting the truth as he called John and suggested the deal instead of John approaching about a deal.

Why he did this was simple, to save his own ass and get a reduced sentence also on drug trafficking charges involving Cocaine in which he was awaiting trial on.

Combine this with John's criminal record or rather lack of one and the informant's own criminal record who would've stood to benefit from this mess if John was convicted, John's lawyers sucessfuly argued a case for police entrapment and in August 1984 John Delorean was found not guilty, but it was a hollow victory.

I personally believe the only thing John was guilty of was going ahead with the deal instead of backing out, but then again, I wasn't $175 million in debt either nor do I plan to be. :P

His company was in bankruptcy and his own reputation was forever tarnished and when he was asked that would he return to the auto industry he said with a large degree of bitterness, "Would you buy a used car from me?"

Afterwards the remains of the Delorean Motor Company were sold on to a Texas based firm which services, repairs and restores Deloreans to this day and offer newly built Deloreans and even upgraded versions.

And it's one of those upgraded Deloreans is what we have in GT6. :)

Packing a little over 200hp after oil change from the same 2.8 PRV V6 that it started life with, its mounted at the back and sends its power to the rear wheels via a 5 speed manual gearbox.

Costing 500,000 Credits, it's not one for those who aren't Gran Turismo Rockefellers, but as I said on race night, you don't buy a Delorean with performance as first priority. :sly:

You buy it for the collectibility and the Nostalgia of the Back To The Future movies, which started in 1985.

It's got similar specs to the Scion FR-S in terms of power and maybe even weight(?) and despite the CS tyres was quite fun to drive and there was very close racing in nearly all the races with the Delorean as shown earlier in this thread.

What the Delorean was crying out for though was even more power, it'll get to 500pp without needing boost and can go all the way to near 550pp with a turbo strapped to it.

Given how iconic it still is today, I can't in good faith call it a beater even though it's still very expensive for its performance level and many cheaper cars are quicker.

So I'll settle on a Netural Verdict. :)

So here we are at the end of a very long post with 2 Neutral verdicts, a low battery and cramped hands from writing this whole thing up and one last question.

Was it worth it?

Well as I look at my spot in the COTW Hall Of Fame, Yeah, it was all worth it.

I just noticed something about the DeLorean that I thought was share-worthy.

Anyone else here use the "Look left / Look right" options while racing? I typically use it when the action's fender to fender, or to laugh at people as I slowly but surely pull away or overtake. :P

Anyways, the DeLorean's lefts and rights are mixed up. Look left, and it'll show you the right side. Look right, and it'll show you the left side. :irked:
(Note: Doesn't happen in-car)

I don't remember this, must have been a small number of times that I raced the car online (it was at over 500PP). Nowadays I don't shouldn't have the functionality configured anymore because of not-superb quality (I hesitate to say mediocre) on my wheel.

I had some close racing with @Baron Blitz Red last night, just barely getting past him the last hundred yards at Grand Valley in the N1. Then we switched to the Calsonic R32 and had another photo finish at Fuji Speedway, me losing 2nd place by 0.022 seconds. Here's a pic of the action!

I'd have to give sleeper status to the street version of the N1. It has loads of grip even on SH tires, turns well without a lot of understeer 4wd suffers from, and has a lot of giddy-up-go at only 450 something pp. Tuned up its quite surprising at 611pp with 832hp on tap.

All in all a lovely machine. 👍

.....I completely forgot about this thread.

Hey guys, it's been more than a year since my last post here, and I honestly haven't touched GT6 in a long, long time. I see plenty of new faces, and plenty of familiar ones too.

Sorry for the hiatus, but life's been moving faster for me than I can keep up with, so I haven't really had much time for GT. Considering that GTS is also coming out at the tail end of the year and I still do not own a PS4, it's safe to say I'll be stuck in this generation for a while.

I guess I'll be coming back, if you guys'll have me? :D Will not join the races anymore unfortunately, but I'll still try and do a write-up every once in a while.

You're more then welcome to rejoin us. We don't exclude anyone from COTW. I usually don't do any write ups of the cars but I am active in the group and usually try and race with them on Tuesdays when my schedule allows me to. Welcome Back!

You're a new face for me. Hiii!!!

I relate to you, man. I still haven't managed to acquire a PS4, but GTS may well be my motivation..
As for this thread, @McClarenDesign seems to have disappeared into a void of Project Cars and DiRT Rally, so these days running of this thread is kind of a tag-team between myself and @Vic Reign93. If you're able, you could always join in the Time Trial events on the GT6 Community section :D

In either case, welcome!
