Have you tried using them recently or was this just after the game came out? The game seems to play a bit smother than it did so perhaps it was just that.

I may give it a go again. I've barely turned my PS3 on for gaming between SC2 and Minecraft and reading up on SC2...

Minimum damage for something like the 1911 is 20, so 5 shots is the absolute max for a pistol to kill in BO ( I don't think any are weaker) and they do 40 damage up close. Then there's the Python which punchs up to 50 damage max which becomes absolutely lethal particularly if dual wielded. the reason secondaries seem bad is because you can't use them like a primary as in MW2, you have to take into account you are at a disadvantage rather then carry a mini M16 like a Raffica or insta-kill shotty for a secondary.

As for shotties, my last game online on Black Ops was TDM with the Olympia (the worst shotgun by far in most peoples eyes) on split screen 21-0 all gun kills no lethal air support. The shotguns are made to be used in a different way and not for any idiot to run around like a fool with the MW uber SPAS that has an unbalanced OSOK range seemingly at times particularly as you can carry it along with your assault rifle.

The PS3 version definately has notable server problems, though I am not susceptible to them now I'm at uni as I usually get host though I've yet to play since I got back. As for campaign, it's there but anyone buying any COD for a good single player is being a fool, I've found them all just stories to keep you moving into different situations and plot twists which you could see a mile away. Not to say they're bad, but it's clearly not the focus.

Black ops is by far the more balanced of the recent 2 of the series, and ultimately requires some actual gun skill rather then laser accurate stopping powered assault rifles. You seem to have had a poor experience Tommy but it sounds like the server issues have meant you haven't had the opportunity to give the game a real chance. The removal of stopping power means you aren't feeling forced into certain set ups, allowing all perks to be utilised properly without fear, and similarly the fact that secondary weapons can no longer be used as primary ones is hardly a bad thing, it just encourages more sparing and efficient use of your primary. Besides, any good player knows to swap out their secondary long before their primary runs dry.

I do have to agree with you on some things there. Stopping Power brought a whole new varity to the game. And I have to agree with the MW2 Spas12. You can kill at an effective range for a Submachine Gun, but at point blank half the times you need to pump another round in to finish the target off.

I dont know about you guys, maybe it is my general connection, but I rarely can ever take down someone in last stand with '1' bullet. The last few games (even in combat training) I had to lay 2-3 rounds in to down the m once and for all. My understanding for "Last stand" was the player was put down to 1 health, therefore should die with any bullet or direct impact from special grenades or that.

I dont know, I would still prefer MW2 to BO. I love the LMG's in MW2, Im not a pray and spray player, but have the ability to lay in lots of rounds is brilliant for me. The MG4 is by far my favourite weapon. With the grip it becomes the ACR just with an extra 70 bullets in one belt >=]. And the weapon just clicks with me, on three accounts I've legitimitly gotten the Golden Title for it. The circle it follows when it fires seems to get me headshots 1/3 kills.

Again I find last stand to be fine, I usually kill them with a stun grenades which is always the safest way in most COD games as the stun throws quicker then a flash and you need not expose yourself to a potential magnum/python in the case of the 2 games in question. I'm also finding 1 bullet gets the job done either a shell from a shotty (the Stakeout in particularly with Black Ops from what I hear is very effective, but the Olympia works nicely to, ADS to decrease the pellet spread for a more reliable one shot kill).

Weapon wise I became a big fan of the TAR21 on MW2 because it had meaningful recoil, with BO all the guns have some recoil that needs to be accounted for. The reason I bring this up is because my flatmates cousin doesn't like Black Ops to, his reason? The guns aren't accurate enough . I can't say I ever really used the MG4, definately an unpopular favourite there, I found it just a little weak when I wanted to use an LMG I pulled out the even more unpopular L86 LSW because it has huge power to combine with a grip. Give it a go, some hate it but I know I converted at least one other person to it.

Nice write up Dragonistic, I agree with you on what you are saying, I feel though, that BOP was a reaction to some of the percieved inequalities found in MW2, rather than an actual blueprint that advances the francise.

Some of the things I've noticed are:

A lack of no-scoping. I'm not a no scoper myself, but I do admire the skill. Treyarch in their infinite wisdom, seem to have nerfed that aspect of the game. Why? I don't know. I've heard it is possible to do it with the L496 (whatever you call it) bolt action rifle, but for all intents and purposes, no-scoping is dead. This move is akin to Capcom removing the combo system from Street Fighter (which was orginally a glitch in the programiming). A very stupid and short-sighted change.

Treyarch have messed around with the perks too, with no apparent reason for why they should have changed. For instance, it is no longer possible to use scavenger and ghost at the same time - an essential base class for hardcore modes. Again, this makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

Then there are the challenges for the perks, the requirements are a lot lower than MW2, but have some bizarre twists. IW in their wisdom, made it so that you could aquire the pro ranking no matter what game mode you decided to play. Treyarch, in a moment of stupidity, decided to that it would be better if they forced you to play different game modes to get the pro verison of the perk. This is bad game design.

Then there are the guns. I've never seen a blander more ill-thoughout collection of weapons than those that treyarch have presented in BO. Within each class, there is only one gun worth using, and the rest are usually varioations on a theme. The most extreme example of this can be found in the sub-machine gun class. With every gun being only marginally different to the next, except for the AK74, wich seems to be the swiss-army knife weapon in BO.

Then there is absolutley retarded spawn system, that harks back to FPSs of yester-year. I don't know how they thought that a kill spawning behind you would be fun. It isn't It keeps you on your toes though, which is a good thing I guess...

If you want to see the problem with spawns in BO, just play Nuketown. If you are not on the absolute vanguard of your sides attack, you will find that you will soon be running back into your own spawn to kill the opposing team! This is how it is in the game, you run to one side of the map to kill them, then you have to run back to the other to kill them all again.

Treyarch did the right thing, by getting rid of stopping power, but imidiately follwed that up with the most retarded descision ever made in the franchise - giving everyone commando pro by default! What were they thinking? Commando pro was one of MW2's biggest flaws, so for Treyarch to give it to everyone by default is very, very poor game design.

The biggest problem with BO though, is the fact that it is still based on the COD4 engine. This isn't a bad thing, but compared to the MW2 engine it leaves the game lacking. The problem I have with the COD4 engine is that when you shoot someone, they are not dead until the final bullet registers the kill.

This leads to all sorts of nonesense where the guy getting shot can shoot you back (and kill you), can swim through your bullets to get to you, and lets not forget those silly round the corner kills. Don't get me wrong, this stuff happens from time to time in MW2, but a general rule of thumb is upper chest area or better hits, equal instant kills no chatting back (unlike BO).

BO is a good game, though not a great game. Some things are good no more killstreak boosting, and the community feature are excellent. But, the general feel of the game is that is was made to appeal to those that DIDN'T like MW2, which is a bad move. MW2 excluded by ability, BO excludes by design, it is obvious which is the better game! :) 👍

I like the idea that you can't use Scav and Ghost (force a compromise), before all the Perk 2 slots (bar stopping power) on MW2 were all in for a fair shout against each other and forced you to make a decision. Use dual mags instead of scavenger, in order to run ghost, it's a compromise but it just keeps on meaning that there's no instant go to class meaning yet more variety. The pro perks I feel your complaint, some challenges are irritating but they also force people to play the objective in those modes if they want to get it which is a good thing to balance out the bad. Honestly why shouldn't people have to learn new skills to get a perk labelled 'Pro'?

Magic bullets has always been a problem with COD, I think it only occurs more often because it takes the enemy slightly longer to kill you but overall it is a minor annoyance.

The knife is a problem which they're dealing with in each patch as is sniper, it's definately much better then it was to start off for both and similarly there's talk of reducing the AK74u clip down to 20 rounds online (like it's zombies counterpart) but I actually use the Spectre now instead. Use an SMG like an SMG and the 74u isn't as great as everyone says it is, you can put on Rapid Fire to cancel that out but then you lose it's better mid range (where it should still be dominated by assault rifles and is). What the 74u is, is a versatile but not perfect gun at multiple ranges (not like a certain sub in MW2, the UMP which carried more power then an assault rifle at long range!).

As a testimony to how sniping works on Black Ops now, it's not as easy to quickscope on MW2 (it was TO easy on MW2, imo COD4 had it right). Now though they have it so you can't snipe very aggressively, but you aren't confined to camping like on release.

And therein lies the big draw of Black Ops, they are actually changing things and trying to rule out problems. The spawns may seem sporadic but more often than not it's because an enemy pushed to far into the spawn and we don't want another Highrise from MW2 where you could absolutely demolish a team from inside their spawn for a long period of time. Whether they'll change those to, who knows, but Black Ops keeps getting better with each patch and I hope they sort out the servers for the PS3 version so people can really give it a chance.

Don't get me wrong I liked MW2, but as I wrote in my review of it for gamespot (not actually gamespot themselves but through member reviews), most of the changes from previous games just provided imbalance between players and/or frustrations. If we want to talk about stupid ideas, Commando (it is still longer range then BO), Danger Close, One Man Army, get harrier earn nuke without shooting your gun again, nuke despite losing an objective game gain insta-win, literal zero recoil guns, sleight of hand pro uber quick scopes, secondaries better then alot of primaries, the list goes on.

Black Ops has alot of problems but the list is shorter and as someone who is usually one of the top players in a match I feel like I am rewarded for being so rather than randomly punished by danger close and/or commando (the RC used to always get me, but no more), or I would be overly rewarded when I hit 5 or 7 kills which could often result in a win for my team without me ever moving again or firing a bullet. I can see why alot of MW2 players don't like the transition, but I think it's wrong to peg either as a bad game really, ultimately in the overall scheme they both have issues, they both have positives, but they both have a very different feel. That to me is a great thing to have when they're released so often, though all COD games are similar in their base feeling, they do still feel different when you really get down to it.

Anybody here play MW2 recently? It's been hacked so badly, that I'm afraid of even going online with my friends anymore. Reason being that people can now derank you, etc. thereby ruining all of your hard work. Yes, I know its just a game, but imagine the day that you jump into the wrong online lobby on GT5 and lose all your cars...

Here is an example of the ridiculousness I am talking about. Not my video:

We've been talking about the same thing in the CoD4 thread. In my case, I picked the game back up in attempt to reach gold cross tenth prestige.

Modders(or hackers, whatever) were everywhere. Finally, couple weeks in, I get into a lobby where guy took off flying. I got out of the match, but when I got out, my rank was gold cross 55 on the main menu, everything messed up, they even altered my k/d.

Not sure how many other games are hacked on PSN right now...I guess people dont know about it really yet, but it could be bad for GT5 online (which some have mentioned). Sony needs to do something about it (if they can).

Well, the two games these modders have ruined for me are the Call of Duty 4, and from what I understand, also Modern Warfare 2. I'm very disappointed in Activision and PSN right now. While I highly doubt anything would get done, I am seriously considering ditching Activison, maybe also PSN/PS3. I've blown steam about $60-a-year Xbox Live before, but if I'm gonna be rid of silly problems like this on XBL for just $60 per year, so be it.

Sorry I took so long to reply! :D

You rant about some thing, and find that ther are even more terrible things you forgot to mention! Black Ops has a VERY bad camper problem. I haven't encountered camping like I'm finding in this game, since the days of Resistance Fall of Man - it's shocking! Honestly, there is a hardcore, almost a majority of gamers that have taken to camping, and it is ruining the game.

I've been playing split-screen online the past couple of days, and to tell you the truth... I'M IMPRESSED! Serisoulsy, I was dubious about how Treyarch could manage to pull it off, but they have some how, and I have not noticed any significant problems with doing it. This is something that is worthy of praise! 👍

The more I play this game, I find also that it is a different challenge to MW2. Basically, the game is much, much slower. Once I realised that, my enjoyment has increase significantly. MW2 seems to be zooming, compared to Black Ops, which seems to be on a stroll by comparrison.

Good points here. TBH, I've got over the dissapointment of not being able to have a true scavenger-ghost class, as I have recently discovered the barebones game modes! :D

I can see you point here, but as I only play with clan, and they are TDM junkies, the opprotunitiies to get pro for some perks is slim. 👍

The AK74u IS awesome, you just need to NOT use rapid-fire. I got caught up in the whole rapid-fire-grip setup for the AK74u, but I found (as you say), mid-range accuracy was spoiled, and long range was, well, unheard of. Extended mag-grip (with savenger pro), is where the AK74u is at! If you can ride without the grip, plop on sleight of hand pro, then you have an SMG with the stamina of an LMG, with the firepower of an assault rife! 👍

To call the spawn system in Black Ops sporadic, would be to lay upon the game, an undue compliment - they are not sporadic, they are schizophrenic!

As another example, last night I was on Summit, and as is normal if you are not on the attacking wave, I was running back into my own spawn to kill the opposing team, but I found that every time I respawned, I was either in my own spawn area, or theirs! This was happening almost every other kill. I'd either have to run the whole map to get to the opposing team, or about face and deal with the opposing team that had just spawned in the same area as I had.

The biggest complaint I have about the spawn system though, is that I cannot get a feel for the scope of the battle. In MW2, you could sense the flow of the match, and plan your tactics accordingly. in Black Ops, there seems to be no flow, just random encounters. One minute the area you are in is dead, next minute half the server has spawned right where you are! That is really bad spawn management, no matter how you look at it! 👍

Yeah, I agree with you on these aspects, there are many things in MW2, that could have been done differently, but I have rarely suffered from any of those problems. Yeah, I get 'fortied' every now and then, but it was never enough of a problem ofr me to rant and rave about.

If you find you are suffering from problems like that, then you should play with a clan. Solo play in MW2 is crap, plain and simple. Don't get me worng, you can learn some stuff from the game playing like that, but MW2, really starts to shine when played with teammates you trust. My clan has a six-man team that plays the game to death, and we never fear any of the flaws you have mentioned.

Here's my opinion, I'm not sure if anyone will agree with me.

Right off the bat I'm going to say Black Ops sucks, as does treyarch. (I'm saying this for the ps3) Just overall bad game play (my opinion)

Call of Duty 4 was by FAR the best one. Simple game play, not a bunch of extra unneeded **** like player cards and emblems. Just straight PVP.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 has amazing game play. Graphics were not a disappointment in this one, nor lag. The PVP in this is also great, right up there with COD 4, but....Noob Tubes (enough said)

Now, the only 2 call of duties worth playing are getting hacked up the ass. Cod 4 taking the bigger beating. Unfortunately, black ops is not getting screwed around, but I will refuse to play it. So it looks like it's Gran Turismo until the PS3 figures this **** out.

So do you agree or disagree? I want to hear your thoughts.

My opinion is mixed on Black Ops. It mostly has to do with how the weapons handle. Maybe I just noticed it more with BO than other games, but the recoil randomness annoys me significantly. Some of the time the recoil will be non-existent and allow you to drive tacks; during these occasions, I have felt invincible and that I will win most any encounter with the opponents. Other times, landing more than one bullet on target is a lesson on futility and makes the game incredibly frustrating. On MW2, with the weapons that had fairly significant recoil, the recoil was consistent enough that it was fairly easy to account for with burst firing; on BO, if the recoil randomness is not in your favor, then I have found burst firing even useless. That discrepancy is a bigger annoyance than a proper judge of "gun skill". If I wanted to play a game of chance, then I would go down to my local gas station and buy a lottery ticket.

I played CoD4 after playing MW2, so I did not get to experience the game in it's heyday, but I can see why the game was so appealing to play.

Graphically, I also think MW2 is better. MW2 seems to have a bit more polish and sharpness. Though, that is not to say BO has fine graphics, BO just lacks a bit in comparison.

but....Noob Tubes (enough said)

I think I am one of the only people that did not have many problems with grenade launchers in MW2. Yes, grenade launchers were occasionally abused, but typically the people who tried to abuse grenade launchers tended to be fodder for my bullets. Instead, mostly I saw myself getting killed to well placed shots with the grenade launcher and good use of the attachment's intended purpose.

With all of that said, it sounds like I do not like BO and that would be partially true. I do somewhat like the game and I somewhat do not like the game. Most of my not liking the game probably has to do with taking a break from FPSs; not having played a FPS is over a month has been nice and right now, I do not really miss playing a FPS.

The money system in BO has not encouraged me to continue playing. The only real incentive to level is to unlock weapons. After unlocking a weapon, any attachment is available to use, so long as you have sufficient funds. That took some of challenge of using a weapon out of the game for me. Also, unlike MW2, I had/have no desire to Prestige in BO. The challenges for Pro perks do not come naturally in the flow of gameplay and ruin the experience of the game; so after unlocking the Pro version of a perk, BO has given me no desire to go through the grind again of unlocking a Pro perk. In MW2, using a perk was something that enhanced my abilities as a player; the pro version just further enhanced my abilities and was unlocked mostly without having to go out of my way to do so.

My opinion on BO would probably be more favorable if I played with people from GTP or was paired up with good players more often. I am a fairly good player, but not good enough to carry a team. I need at least one or two other players helping me out for me to be at my best. BO punishes lesser players and it seemed more often than not, I was on a team with a group of lesser players. Constantly being crushed because your "teammates" are only good at getting steamrolled is not fun.

So I guess we can both agree that the next Call of Duty release from Infinity Ward (aka MW 3) will be a hit?

So I guess we can both agree that the next Call of Duty release from Infinity Ward (aka MW 3) will be a hit?

I am not getting my hopes up for it. That way if it is good, then I will enjoy it more.

Thankfully its only being co-developed by a company calling itself IW. Most of the key people left and Activision has another one of its developers working on it with them.

Have you guys heard the rumor going around that says the former heads of IW purposefully sabotaged MW2? Apparently there are emails from them and EA talking about some shady things.

Sounds like Infinity Ward exists pretty much in name only? I think good chunk of the IW crew's been fired, or left on their own. I'd be very surprised if MW3 matched the CoD4 or MW2 without any additional help, say from someone like Treyarch.

After PSN/Activision/IW just letting modders do whatever they want on CoD4 & MW2, I'm pretty much done with them at this point. I have pondered something like Medal of Honor, or Xbox 360/XBL. And before Time_Attack pops up in here, I have been checking redbox for Black Ops rental. Really!

Edit: Too late!

Bad company/medal of honor are completely different games to cod. I used to like how they felt years ago but now I just can't get into it. COD is just so fluid while in BC/MOH you can't even go prone or pick up a single weapon without picking up the whole kit.

That would be weird. X360 it is. j/k

Why bother buying another console right now. Another couple years we'll have the PS4. I say just stfu and buy black ops before the map pack comes out or you'll really get left in the dust.

Like I'm not already. I'm not a fanboy, as I owned both X360 & PS3. I have to say though, I hear that hack/mod is minimal on Xbox Live. I was upset with $60 a year membership, but looking at the CoD4 & MW2 on free PSN, I don't want it. Period. I'd rather pay $60 to play, than a free game I can't play.

No I haven't! If it's true that wouldn't surprise me at all!

You'll have to do a bit of searching for more info but this comes from a reputable source. It really isn't very shocking when you consider how quickly respawn entertainment came to be an EA after the **** went down with IW and activision. There was clearly a long relationship between key IW people and key people at EA. Some of the people involved are trying to say it was just a joke but I doubt anyone is dumb enough to talk about changing/delaying products with a competing firm.

My initial impression to this is that it's bit of a stretch. I'd have to see the whole email intact to see if it was indeed a "joke" as EA claims. What I find hard to believe is that IW sabotaged their own game. Was not MW2, also the map packs successes? In my eyes, they were epic successes. I think Activision is reaching, which is not at all uncommon in lawsuits.

I think most of IW was already planning on leaving anyway. If doing so would get them in better favor with EA why not fubar MW2.

What I'm saying is that MW2 did not look sabotaged in any way to me. It was quite the opposite.

I also think that some IW crews were decided on jumping ship to EA. But would they actually harm their product, or sabotage their employer? Again, I don't see the sign of any sabotage.

I feel like we are basing our opinions on crap information though. Google search resulted in articles from media and organizations that I had never heard of, and the info they provided were vague & very limited.

The primary sabotage claim is about EA asking IW to push pack the release of the first map back because bad company 2 was about to release. If they are openly asking IW to do something like that one has to wonder to what extent this may have happened already.

And that's the only thing I saw in these articles. Joke or not, EA guy claims in this email that IW guy owned him one, so he didn't mind pushing the date back. Does this mean that when EA guy did IW a favor, earlier, allegedly, was that IW sabotaging EA? To me, this doesn't exactly resemble sabotage. If anything, they are friendly competitors. But again, we don't even know if it's even true.

IMO, MW2, or map packs couldn't have been bigger successes. If they really intended to sabotage the CoD franchise or MW2, these guys better stick with making games, because they suck at it. ;)

That would be corporate sabotage. I don't suggest you try it. Your boss probably won't like it very much.
