Started college today, so what should I expect? Tell me everything because I believe my view on college life is flawed.

Depends what you're doing and where you're doing it. College experiences are different for everyone.

General, it is what you make of it.

^C'mon. That's not true.

Let me tell you (beer talking now), when I was at college I had a woman, a cat, utilities and rent to pay for. This meant working. I didn't stay in dorms because I had a place of my own that was better.

I studied engineering which meant hangout in a workshop half of the week with a bunch of monkeys hitting each other with files. I kept to myself and found some mature students to socialise with (drink, party, talk about cars, borrow money from) and ignored the buffoons.

I worked to pay my way through college which meant less sleep than I'd have liked but I did it and that's that.

I had some fun times, did some cool stuff and had some new experiences. Made a few friends, drank a few beers and went wit the flow.

Potential problems you'll face: Finances in a muddle, hunger, hangovers, finding the right 'group' of friends, finding yourself (I was 20 at the time so wasn't bothered about finding myself, just the nearest bar), regulating your time between study, work and leisure, if you have to work, that is.

There are some other things I can report but they can wait until another time.

All in all, just go with the flow, enjoy yourself and don't take life too seriously or it'll kick you in the nuts.

Good luck.

Just watch any high school or college movie from Hollywood... Thats EXACTLY how it is :sly:

Thanks W3HS, I recognize your avatar, isn't your name 'shem'? :sly:

I believe that is what I meant by my flawed view, I watch too much American TV. When I think of college, I think of, party, girls and alcohol. :scared: Edit: And not to mention, "CHUG! CHUG! CHUG!" :sly:

You clearly never went to study in Dagenham! :yuck:

They're not all bad and they know what they want!

Oh, my. I use to live on the estate that was filmed on, opposite Fords. Blasted Mardyke!

Just for the record, I'm from Romford, not Dagenham. :scared:

It's what you make it, everyone on this forum who has been has had different experiences. I went to and played football for University of Maryland in 2003 before I joined the military in 2006. I learned more about life and myself in that time.

I met some super cool people and connections that I still talk to now.

All I can say is DON'T watch movies and think that's what its going to be like.. some nights.... but not everyday.

Just noticed the white handbag in that pic, Neal. Not a good sign for the working classes.

This so much.

I started university and was never there due to parting, drinking and blacking out.
That was for 2 years.

I was pissed. Changed the Uni, started fresh and did my degree in the minimum of time, while still having a good time.

Yeah, but she's from Lahndan innit. TBH only the dinner lady type on the left looks that working class

/offtopic

Whats the homework like at uni am I going to get depresed because there is so much of it like my mum keeps telling me? (well she doesnt say its depresing just that I will be working almost 24/7 on my studies)

:( I'm from Lahndan init.

At least I'm from a London borough (Havering) as much as my friend from Essex want to tease me that I'm from there.

I do have to remind them of the Met, dialling code, BBC news, transport service; all London.

Depends on what you do, and where you do it. I have Film Studies friends that complain about how many films they have to watch who can't fathom how much work I have to go through a week (English Lit), and likewise my jaw drops at how much my Engineering friends have to do. It isn't really work 24/7, it's just there are times where it certainly feels like it. :D

Great, I want to do engineering and that's the last thing I wanted to hear. :(

Still 2.5 years off but since the top engineering uni's are mostly up north (durham, loughborough) then I'm gonna have to live up there so that means freedom from my parents.

Homework isn't bad most of the time, there are times however when it can get really bad but it's usually your own doing. As was said though that highly depends on what your doing at university.

Homework surprisingly is more time consuming in high school than it is in college. The biggest advantage is that you can pick your classes and they only meet 2-3 times a week (for the most part). The biggest disadvantage is that you can pick your classes. I know, its the same thing but you can go and get a single degree in 20 to 30 different ways and some of them won't prepare you for an actual job after college.

Be careful about being unequivocal, since just about none of this was true for my major. I had way more homework than HS, had to meet 4-5 times per week for most of my classes, and had almost no selection whatsoever (I think I had like two electives).

I can't even get into any classes. And they're all super easy-- until your professor informs you that you're the median and the class average is a D.

Small colleges are great but big universities might not be for you. This place is driving me crazy, and I've only been back for a day.

What was your major? Pre-med, Business or Engineering?

You're in Malaysia? NO idea what college is like there, but use your time wisely, form relationships with your professors, do what they tell you and nothing less, have fun but be responsible and you will enjoy yourself and not fail :)
