Is Cote d'Azur the Monaco circuit that F1 runs, or is it slightly different? Obviously it is really close... but why the different name if it is not the same?

Yeah it's the same track with slightly different props at the side of the road (if you're comparing it with F1 2010).
Dunno why they changed the name.

Maybe the city wanted money for the use of the track name in the game? I think that is probably the reason why.

Otherwise, it's based on the Monaco GP track yeah. There are the typical walls that PD puts in certain areas to prevent cutting turn 1 is a barrier on the inside rather than a curb and a few other barriers. Plus the large bump at Casino corner (turn 3/4) doesn't seem to be there.

They more than likely have never gained the rights to use the Monaco name, so they use Cote D'Azur, which is the name for the southeast corner of France that borders the Mediterranean. Monaco just happens to reside in the region.

The FIA have the rights to use the word / name "Monaco" when associated with motor-sport. I'm assuming it's the same deal with "Monte Carlo", otherwise that would have been the logical choice for the track name, if PD doidn't want to pay for the licence.

Incidentally, Monaco / Monte Carlo is a lovely place to visit. You can walk the full length of the F1 track, visit the casino (from Casino Royale), rent a Ferarri to drive around the circuit (it's just roads most of the time) and try not to get sick at how much richer everyone who lives there is than you, while looking at the hundred million Euro yachts in the harbour. The train to and from Nice is a fantastic journey as well, as is the bus-ride (which is only a Euro).

Not to mention prince alberts car collection!! It's about 4 or 5 euros admission and the very first thing on display is the new Mercedes SLR Sterling Moss:

The name of the track is Cote D'Azur not Monaco, the name of the event (F1) is Monaco Grand Prix ...

The casino was never featured in Casino Royale. While the casino in the world of the film is considered to be in Montenegro, it was actually somewhere in France or the Czech Republic, I think. GoldenEye was the Bond film to feature the casino in Monaco. But if you're talking about the original novel by Ian Fleming, then the casino featured in the story may well have been in Monaco.

Anyway, you're right in saying the circuit is named Cote d'Azur because of licencing arrangements. There's also a few minor changes made around the circuit. The inner section of the Nouvelle Chicane is blocked off, though it's largely to stop players from cutting the corner. The exit of the second half of the Swimming Pool has a similar setup. In fact, that entire section from the exit of the tunnel down to Rascasse features armco barriers along the walls when there's actually a little bit of run-off in real life. Not that it would do you much good.

Yes appart from the Nouvelle chicane it is a widened version of the old monaco before they put a few run offs in and changed the pit layout.

In NFS Shift it was called 'Riviera' I think, both that an Cote d'Azur are non licensed work around names. Technically Monaco is not part of Cote d'Azur because it is it's own country.

If you read the wiki description of 'cote d'azur' it even specifically states 'surrounds the principality of Monaco' i.e. doesn't include it

I guess they had to call it something though... Monegasque City Circuit maybe?

Er, no it's not. It's a fascinating place to visit... but it's effectively a series of buildings that look like multistorey car parks. You see some fantastic cars of course, but the place itself is about as attractive as Coventry city centre.

What's interesting is that if you counted the number of beds in registered domiciles there would be enough for each of the registered inhabitants of the prinicpality... but they would have to sleep six-to-a-room :D

I believe it was Somerset Maughan who called it "a sunny place for shady people"!

My above post was response to that. I'm pretty sure you're wrong, because Monaco isn't part of Cote d'azur,

It's just like an unlicensed version of the Wales GB rally could be called 'England Rally' but it would be plain wrong because it doesn't take place in England.

Again, no :D

The Cote d'Azur comprises the Mediterranean coastline of which the Monagasque principality is part. Don't confuse it with the Departement de Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azure... that IS a delimited region within France.

Here's a map that shows the extent of the Cote d'Azur

Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azure IS the only Cote d'Azur (no e ;) ) it's the only actual technical region of Cote d'Azure, other than that it's just a vague blanket term (used by foreigners) interchangeable with Riviera with no actual boundries

My bad... I don't know why I put the 'e'... but put an A in boundries while you're there :D

You're right, there's no specific Cote d'Azur region but it IS taken to mean the Med coast from Saint Tropez to the Italian border.

In this case I think PD are right to use the moniker for Monaco!

Yeah well I agree in terms of naming the track they could of done far worse. Just shame they couldn't license it, but that's always the way

(I'm a pro evo guy so more than use to lack of licenses in games)

(also grew up in La Colle sur Loup, which IS part of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur)
