It's really strange that you do that, because most people strip extra characters off of names when they talk about people, but you add one that isn't actually part of my name (:

the tilde "~" is the referance for "this is your home directory" in most any UNIX based system. Apache (the greatest UNIX web server) and many other UNIX apps, use this shortcut in directory paths to users' home directories.

In Apache spacifically, each user has a public_html directory in their home directory.

/home/username/public_html

So the Apache web server would serve the contents of that directory as

http://domain/~username

Examples:
http://kremlin.stoneward.com/~loudmusic
http://www.slashdot.org/~LoudMusic

That's where I get my manual signature from. Maybe I should have explained that earlier ...

I dunno ... there are just things that get under my skin sometimes. When something is over used a LOT. Like back in the late 80s and early 90s when everyone was saying "NOT! Huh huh huh" ... that was irritating.

That is interesting...I didn't know that. And what's even more odd, is that I often sign off with " ~later~ " just because it looks good, and I often have the " ~ " under written text when I approve documents at work..

Funny how things work sometimes isn't it? :D

*cough* im gonna kick everybody in the balls if they dont shutup *cough*

Yeah ... it's a funky character. I like it. I also use to mean "similar but not equal, kinda like close, but I'm not exactly sure". I do that because the mathematical symbol for 'similar' is an equal sign with the top bar squigly and that symbol isn't in the ascii set ... "kinda equal, sorta".

Example:

The price was ~$50.

Also, in the land-o-UNIX, from the command line you can do a "cd ~" and that will change directory to the current user's home. If I was logged in as the user 'loudmusic' and was anywhere in the filesystem, I could "cd ~" and I would go to /home/loudmusic. So basically "~" means "home".

~ Sweet ~

That funny character for "similar" is called: "Circa" for about or amost equal to... You'll also see two of the "~" on top of each other...which also means "Circa".

Well, I, as I'm sure almost everyone here, has been doing it for a long time in the real world, but the earliest I could find in a search was here:

Here's another interesting example:

Geez, I wonder who could have posted that..... If only he had an unusual way of marking messages as his own... if only...... ;)

Ha ha ha ha! Busted, caught red handed.

I haven't seen you around Burger World lately....

I was thinking Back to the Future (I or II), but then I checked http://www.imdb.com and it claims Beavis and Butthead sort of indirectly. Where'd you get that from?
