Seriously. If you are listening to music with lyrics your concentration is going to take a hit. I think this may also be a reason some people don't listen to music in-game, because they don't know about or like the instrumental music that's out there. A simple drum beat and bass line, however, is really non-intrusive and will guide your focus to each and every apex.
Also, if you are listening to bands that switch styles a lot your going to risk losing the flow of things.
For these reasons, despite my vast music tastes, I stick to long DJ sets of dub techno/DnB/etc. It helps you arrive to the "zone" and makes sure you stay there for the remainder of the set. Unfortunately GT5 doesn't have a "resume track" like wipeout so my laptop is outputted to the same speakers as my ps3.
