Got FIFA 13 for Christmas and am loving the career mode, but I don't really understand how character growth works in career. In players such as Sterling and Suso, they grow rather quickly, even when I don't start them or sub them out constantly, but players like Glen Johnson and Downing tend not to rise that much, and both of them are starters who I play constantly and rarely go out of the game. Is it their age?
So you're playing as Liverpool then? Go and enquire about every player in the game, then you'll be linked with every player as they are in real life.
I know a number of good teams to go with in career mode myself, even if they aren't in the most popular leagues. I mean, Red Bull Salzburg in the Austrian Bundesliga are surprisingly good, especially when you consider they have 6 million to spend.
If you're going for a team in a lesser-known league, you might as well go for the richest, though there are a few exceptions.
For instance, the Liga do Brasil is fair game unless you pick a team with not one 4* skiller, then you're screwed.
Russian League is good if you pick one of the highest level teams, and I know Spartak Moskva are one of the best on the game with the default squads (they've been nerfed badly since then).
The same thing that applies to the Liga do Brasil also applies to the Eredivisie - any team with some guys with skill is pretty good. I know for a fact Vitesse were the best team to play as for career mode last year for me, and they're still right at the top today. Shame their 5* skiller from FIFA 12 isn't anymore.
While you can pick a top league team in the 'big 5 countries' with no problem whatsoever (especially the more higher quality ones), it's better I feel to actually pick a lower league team there. I mean, as an Englishman, the 4 leagues there seem to depend more on pride over money as to which team you pick, but there are some other favourite teams I have in the other lower divisions that I like to pick - FC Barcelona B, La Spezia etc. (not the 2. Bundesliga, avoid that, it really is a pile of crap)
However one lower league team that is very good to pick is AS Monaco, in Ligue 2. The French Ligue 1 is not the best to go into, but Monaco have more money than any team in a division that is not the top, at £9.5 million. That's more than most of the teams in Ligue 1 and their overall is about as high as half of the teams in there too. They have plenty of resources not only to start, but also that you can apply later on. And of course, it's a pretty luxury name too.
To be fair there isn't a wrong way to go in career mode, providing it won't get you fired from the job. But the best ways to go are...well, the best ways to do it, really.
