Had some fun races last night with Nepal, Outlaw, and others at Nurb F.

What is a good time there, without draft?

think outlaw was doing high 2'14 in the room when I was there.Thats the best time I've seen someone do so far......

Yeah, he hit 2:14.9. I got down to 2:15.2 or so. Outlaw figured the "fast" guys would be faster still, and I have no doubt. Just curious.

I was the lucky guy who spun in front of 39 other cars, sitting in the kill zone at exit over a hill.

That's not just any hill, that's the entrance to Thunder Valley!

Not only is it a great corner but it also offers unobstructed views of the track so you can take close shots of the cars at speed without a stupid catch fence in your line of sight.

Hey Turbo, just wondering if my pic still isnt up because youre waiting for me to make a number change. I noticed you showed RedReevos with 13. Red's the one who changed his number, however.

Hey guys, I got home last night to find that our internet was down. I think it's getting fixed today, hopefully. It will take me a white to get up to speed with everything, so give me some time. Not ignoring anyone. :)

I'm learning that I am faster in the real thing than in GT5. Was working really hard last night to break into the 1:17's with a brand new, zero miles car and using the DS3 controller. 1:18.008 was the best I could do - a bit jet lagged and making a few mistakes, but I had some good concentration laps.

1. How much difference should I expect with a totally broken in engine?
2. I also just bought a G27 wheel. Are all of you wheel users convinced that you are faster with the wheel than with the DS3. Look forward to your answer and why you think it's faster or not? Trying to decide if I just need to quit the DS3 cold turkey for this series.

Is this better, RT?

Hi, can still I sign up for this race? I should be getting the DLC this weekend. Would that be too late? I can race in the division 1 time slot. Really looking for a fun series to race in.
Thanks

I think it was worth about .5 at spa. But not much at shorter twistier tracks. It only goes from 207 to 213hp. So ~3% increase in power; so draw your conclusions on what +3% power does for you.

Especially since you have real-world experience you should toss the DS3 in the corner and only use it to chat. Never felt like I wasted 1¢ of wheel ownership cost.

Vouching for this guy. A super clean, fast racer, very personable, friendly and respectable. Would be a great addition to the series. He frequents my CLEAN SPEC RACING lobby alot, and does very well.

1. I didn't notice that much of a difference between a fresh engine and a fully broken in one, but......

2. I just switched from a ds3 to a G27, and it is definitely different to say the least. I am having an awful time hitting an apex consistently, and once I start to spin, fogetaboutit, I can't save it to save my life. I'm sure with time everything will get better, just don't think you are going to hook up the wheel and instantly drop 2 sec. IMO of course.

I have had thoughts of switching back to the ds3, but decided I am going to tough it out, even if it means I am going to be a backmarker for this series.
:grumpy:

The difference in time is signficant, what's important to note is that as the motor breaks in, it's not just peak power that changes, but the whole power band. In the very hilly trial mountain, it was worth many, many tenths for me. I don't have enough data to speculate an exact number, but I will add that I agree with TNJF, it is worth AT LEAST a half second on a course like Spa.

As a real world driver who made the jump to sims right before GT Academy (finished 24th US overall with all kinds of B.S. surrounding my finish) I can tell you that the game is undriveable for me using the controller. I am wayyy faster now than I was in the Academy over a single lap (half second faster at least) and I can tell you there are many differences and tricks to driving in a sim versus real world. Sim driving is a skill set, just like autocross, just like learning a race track and doing time attack, just like carting, just like rally, just like dirt oval racing, just like ice racing etc. Being good at any one of these "motorsport disciplines" will make you fast, or at least provide a good skill set to build on for the others, but in order to reach and compete with the best in each discipline, you need practice. Sim racing is another "discipline" of motorsports in this regard. With time, you'll learn all of the little "tricks" to being fast in GT5. The key is to take the mindset of always being a student, and learn from those that are faster than you (this is how I got to my current level.) It is tremendously difficult and challening, but very rewarding. Just keep it up and you'll be fine -

Wow... Thanks.

P.S when will you next be opening that "CLEAN SPEC RACING" room?

Epic post.

No problem PTP. :)

I'll open the lobby when I get electricity back. I live in Connecticut, half the state has been without power since Saturday afternoon. No heat, no electricity, no hot water. I have been living out of duffle bag and hopping from friends houses to sleep/shower. It sucks.

I will be on the back foot going in to Nurburging GP/F compared to the guys with a week of practice there in the Miata. But I know the course well, so I should be able to get up to speed quickly. Though I may not even get power back by then, so there is a chance I may miss the first race altogether. We'll see.

1. I am of the school that feels 6HP is not really going to make a huge difference in lap times. Perhaps a couple tenths on a track that requires long pulls at WOT but it surely won't improve lap times by something as dramatic as a second. I am not saying you think it will improve your lap times by a second or more, rather I am simply stating that I never factor break-in HP into how much I think my lap times will improve over time.

2. I look at it this way, the Gran Turismo series is the "real driving simulator" and I think most people will agree with me that using a wheel and pedal combo simulates the driving of a car a *tiny* bit more accurately than a gamepad that was developed for console gaming. There are some very fast guys who race GT5 online with a DS3, in fact one made it to Florida, so you definitely can be lightening fast without a wheel but why would you want to try if you had a G27 readily available to you? I find playing Gran Turismo with a wheel and pedal combo to be 10x more exciting, enjoyable and addictive as compared to using a DS3. If I were you, my main concern wouldn’t be whether I was going to be faster with my newly purchased G27 or my DS3 but what kind of mount or cockpit I want/need for my new setup.

But to answer your question, I am faster with my G25 than I am with a DS3 because I haven’t used a gampad for racing since GT3.

I was glad to be racing against you guys last night. I never was a threat to take a position. I can stay with you guys but i make a mistake or not get on the gas soon enough Im behind. Still with a DS3. I hope as soon as i get a job, ill get a G27 and a full Race seat setup. Hope to see most of you at 4 PM on Sunday in Germany.

If there is room I would love to join division 2 as that is the only time I will be open number 73 fluorescent pink haha

Mine still wasn't full broken in last night, if that tells you anything. Was around 209 hp. I think everyone else has done an ample job of giving you their opinions. I think once you are up with the top dogs, that little bit will matter. Until then, it doesn't matter as much. Just like in real life. ;)

I think I am better in real life as well. Auto-xer and track instructor. That wouldn't seem relevant to your question, however, I use it to make this point: I was pretty good with the controller. Hung right in there with wheel users. When I switched to the wheel, I slowed down quite a bit. Took a long time to get back to the point that I think I am as fast, or maybe faster, then I once was. I found my biggest hurdle was in the way I approached the wheel. Best way to describe the issue is, I was treating it like a toy, and not an actual steering wheel. So, don't expect to sit down and immediately be faster with a wheel. I have never meet, or talked to anyone, that has. That being said, I HIGHLY encourage the switch. Much more immersive in game experience. That, and, just like that extra 6 hp you get from a fully broken in motor, it is that last tenth of an edge most of the fast guys have.

Do people automatically reach for the G27 because Fanatec doesn't do much marketing? Same price point, better company (smaller boutique shop dedicated to racing equipment vs massive multi-national making mice and remotes next to their wheels in a Chinese factory), and better products.
I can understand getting a DFGT because the price point is great.
But I can say my last wheel was a Logitech because there was no choice. When I weighed the G27 against the Fanatec GT3 + awesome club-sport pedals... I can't see how any sane person would go with the G27.

My fastest was a 2:14.49 and Nepalli ran a 2:14.2 when he was ahead. The aliens (you know who you are) will likely run high 2:12s for pole time and I'll be looking at the replays and scratch my head, saying "How in the world can they carry more speed into corners than I can? My car doesn't grip like that!"

My guess is about .5 seconds.

This is the way I see it.

Short term, it is likely you'll be slower than with a DS3 but long term, not only will you make up for it with lap times, the experience will be quite rewarding. What I did when I got GT5 was to ditch the controller and run through the license tests with the wheel so that I can learn the basics using a different input device. Since I was already a fast driver with the controller, it took me weeks to match my personal bests but then I broke through and my lap times become more consistent.

As for what to use for the series, be mindful of the other competitors around you. Use whatever makes you a cleaner driver out there. 👍

chassis rigidity is not tuning right I did it and still lets me in races so am I ok?

putting this up as a reminder to Turbo as this was missed on the previous page and im sure Davy would like an answer :)

Mule listen to Brosif your constantly quiting using the G27 in Integras because your slower and going back to your DS3.

 I say that to everyone and no one takes me seriously.
I was really fast with the analogue sticks since I'd been using it since GT. Like GT with no number on the psx. And when I got a wheel in GT4 I was struggling to get back up to speed and be WRS competitive until I sat down with an afternoon of grinding the license tests with the wheel. Worked wonders for applying what I already knew to the new input device by doing the repeated 1-2 corners at a time with a clock and ghost to help.
That's when I changed my mind and started to think the license tests weren't just an annoyance but actually a pretty good learning tool if you use them as one.

I saw it, I guess we'll allow it as it's not really something I can police. Wish we had more than one car so we could test this stuff out.

Also, @ Mopar-440 : You've re-registered 3 times now, each time with a different number and a different color. Why?
