Hamilton didn't have room to stay on the track, he had to avoid the collision. Vettel did have room but he CHOSE to go off track. That's the key difference that you seem to be ignoring here.

Button. Man alive again! Good to see.

Kimi... Despite stupid (IMO) team tyre strategy he still got 4th. The man was fast all weekend, especially on hard tyres, still they force him on soft-soft-hard? How dumb was that?

Vettel had a good weekend. Consistently fast and milking everything out of that RBR. Borderline illegal challenge for 2nd? Yes. Still, didn't crash them both.

Both Sauber and diResta deserve a mention. In the other hand, the mercs... Not impressed.

But Alonso takes the prize. I usually am not one to praise start to finish dominance. But considering he hadn't the fatstest car, macs, rbrs and lotuses seamed faster on outright race pace and ultimate lap times, he did do another outstanding job. All skill and brains, not luck. Respect.

You know what? I almost agree. The Red Bull was clearly not fast enough today (as shown by Webber) but Vettel drove on the very edge the entire race. I bet he had a more stressful afternoon than Alonso.

And that is no joke.

I agree, why would they do 2 stops on softs when he proved in Q1 that on primes he was the fastest of anyone?
 
If Vettel get a penalty, I think it will be 20 seconds because that's just how it is, but I think that's unfair. If it was earlier in the race, he would receive a drive through and he would only lose around ten seconds.

Yes, starting from Silverstone, this is the new format for podium celebrations, but I think BBC mentioned that not all races will have it this year.

This is what is killing them. No way a lotus is gonna win a race like this... Unless they get extremely lucky.

You don't have to leave a car's width of a track, so... That rule only applies when you return to the racing line.

Button didn't leave much room for Vettel, did he? And from that angle, it looks like he was alongside Button the entire time. Not sure if he deserves a penalty, but I'm biased...
 
I agree that both overtakes were "illegal" in principle, as they used off track to get ahead. However:

1 rules were clarified after that incident to prevent it form happening again (if I recall correctly) so at the time, Hamilton didn't do anything illegal

2 Button allowed room. So Vettel went on illegal grounds (already clarified meanwhile) _and_ deliberately IMO as he had room to fight on track.

I never stated that those were the rules. The video clearly shows that Rosberg aggressively forced him to go off the track, which is what distinguished that incident from today's. Button clearly shows no aggression in this video.
 
I think the key point is Vettel did not think "I have no room I will go over the run off".
He straightened the car up when he was pointing to the run off not down the straight before Button closed the door (according to some).
 
Vettel says "clearly it's not an advantage if you try to accelerate on the paint rather than on the circuit."

Another load of BS considering that "sticky paint" really sticks (unless wet) and he had no disadvantage there...

He were used to see drivers stepping on the paint and spinning under braking or acceleration, and that just doesn't happen cause "sticky paint".

Key for me is at 6 - 7s. He is behind. Then accelerates ON track, gains momentum and carries it wide through the run off. That is what looks deliberate IMO.

Had he accelerated and kept it on track, could he pass? Or they could've touch? Who knows. But IMO no to both. JB allowed room, and since it was JB, you wouldn't expect different, and with a harder angle SV couldn't have accelerated as hard (even on the "non-painted" stuff :rolleyes: )

- "Hamilton was just stupid" (getting his lap back),
- "did nothing wrong" (overtaking over the outside), even after complaining about it in the past and the rules having been clarified meawhile
- "Button did not complaining about it" (lie, we all heard it...)
- "I have taken no advantage from that move" (seriously?)

One really wonders how on earth he doesn't have more fans... such a nice guy.
