Forza 4 VS GT5 (read the first post before you contribute)

While graphics are an interesting subject, the posting of endless comparison shots is not going to further this discussion.

If anyone want to start a topic on that (i.e. pick a car and compare shots between the two titles), then knock yourselves out, for this thread however little is going to be achieved as a whole by this.

The LFA just makes the 800 standard cars look more depressing. I'll ask again though.
I own GT5 and Forza 4, so I'm on this forum as I play Forza more, it just for me does more for me and I love the whole feel and experience of the game.
Obviously I was drawn to this thread as I own GT5 but was left disappointed and cold by it.
So as a result I post why for me I prefer Forza. And at the same time I get to find stuff out about the game.
it's just beyond me why people who love GT5 so much but don't even own Forza are even on this forum at all ??
Maybe I'd excuse one post , but 20/30 posts !!??
Why?? Is it cause you are Kaz? or because you need constant validation that your game ( same one I own) is the best?

Reminds me of the people at work who when I say I have virgin TiVo and not sky TV they look at me like I'm mad, then they go on about how sky is the best la la la la la, totally fail to realise or care that I can get all sky channels on Virgin if I wish... seriously why do some folks not be happy or complete till they believe they have something better?

I will never forget the first time I saw this picture. It really had me fooled. I even thought someone went through the trouble of adding the GT watermark to a real picture. If it wasn't for the damage to the rear bumper you could remove the GT watermark and you could almost never tell it was a game. GT in my eyes still has a one up with lighting and textures of most premium models in premium settings.

It's just a shame that only 20% of the game is that way. I would rather PD had taken away the 800 standard cars and built a better career mode with more customization abilities on all 200+ cars.

Thank god i wasn't the only who got fooled by that pic. Its been floating around for a while now. Lets keep it real that picture looks so great due to gt's awesome lighting system. It actually saves the standards from looking horrendous. And its actually the only thing it has over FM4. I think Fm coulda pulled it off but we'de have collateral issues that gt suffers from.

^^^this. Many of us Forza/GT owners agree that GT excels in the graphics department - in spots (Nordschleife and premiums). But that also doesn't mean that Forza's graphics are any less spectacular for a console racing game. This issue should be put to bed but we all know that will never happen as that is about the only thing that GT has in it's arsenal. Any VS discussion will undoubtedly revert to that same thing over and over and over and over... Reverting to the Forza "cartoon" graphics comments just show an exaggeration to support an agenda.

AND, if graphics was the "only" criteria for a virtual racing game why not just eliminate the hardware and software and buy a subscription to Road & Track or Car & Driver 💡

There is SO much more to a virtual racing game. I do consider myself a graphics whore as some put it. Both games suit me fine for the task as hand. It is the rest that makes a complete and immerse racing experience and where Forza excels; physics, AI (don't know if I EVERY had a GT AI car pass me), leader boards, livery editor, sounds (car, crash,), graphical race battle scars ;), Auction house, Storefront, need I go on.

OK, now you can get back to the my car looks better than your car.

Who cares? If you are trying to "win" you are fighting a losing battle with everyone here. The only "winner" in the video game business is the game that sells and continues to sell. Hate to break it to you but in that department GT5 wins....

It is true, the GT fan base is huge BUT it isn't because of GT5. PD has built the momentum over a long period of time and now a lot of sales are based on that momentum. If they don't turn things around, IMO sales will start to fall - GT5 was not real good for the GT franchise. The Xbox was hurt by a lack of good racing wheel choices but that is changing and the quality of Forza releases will also build momentum. Also IMO, the PS3 is starting to lose credibility as a reliable gaming platform. I have never had so many console crashes as with my PS3. I have been rebuying a few of my older games for Xbox now that I got a Fanatec. I have not given up on the PS3, just waiting for that killer racing sim.

On the other hand Forza has amazing sound, better movement inside, but no windows, strange driver animations and awkward looking materials inside.
They both fall face first when compared to the helmet cam but I believe that Forza's cockpit experience is much more satisfying the GT5.(especially now that the shake is gone).

Both of them have no windows.

I just wish that the interior view was adjustable for Forza. It seems like the driver has fish eye lenses for eyes. :yuck:

The GT5 interior on the other hand is great. I like it but it shakes too much for me when just driving. Also screens with LED's for some reason look better than Forza.

I agree with you, that is the reason why I said that we will have to wait and see if GT6 will sell like GT5 did. I hope they are able to correct the mistakes from GT5, hire someone who is an audiophile, and take the GT franchise farther than ever before, but I'm not holding my breath. However, the same can be said for Forza. Still waiting for a realistic lighting engine, split screen replays, and a greater attention to the little details. They get most of the big details right, but some of the little ones (that a lot of people would consider insignificant) they don't get right.

Shift2 had the best cockpit of any game on console. Windshield with debris from other cars, rubber hitting the glass from tires, correct driver hand movments, guages that worked correctly, and just pretty.

If Forza had S2 cockpits + tracks....damn it would be near perfect as far as race immersion, imo.

I said as soon as Shift 2 hit my console that BOTH Turn 10 and PD needed to take a good look at what they did with interior views.....Shift 2 smashes it out of the park (to give Race Pro credit here despite its major flaws the interiors were pretty smart).....

You can say about the having more cars but then as true as that is i'd happily lose some of the roster if it meant interior like shifts......the Helmet cam HAS to be the way forward next gen....

This alone has made me want to load the game up...

The single best thing about Shift 2's cockpits is the fact that you can actually upgrade them, in my opinion. Sure, in FM4, I can add a rollcage and weight reduction places racing seats in the car (if I remember that right), but that's it.

It's nice to see a car that's supposed to be a track weapon with an interior to match. I hardly see cars that have full weld-in rollcages, but the standard steering wheel and/or dashboard (don't bother posting pictures of the odd car out there that does exactly that, I' assume y'all got my point :lol:).

Indeed. Both games have great car lists, but a long way to go in terms of options for upgrading a single car of your choice. Being able to upgrade your car was special back in GT1 when few games allowed that. 14 years later and the most major difference now is that some games allow livery creation.

I wouldn't mind at all if games like Forza and GT kept their car lists to ~500 well chosen cars, and progressed by making them steadily more customizable in every which way you can imagine.

Agreed 100%. I would love to be able to actually take a normal road going car and turn it into a true race car, wide body kit, extensive aero modifications and stripped out interior, the real deal.

Shift 2 kinda showed us how that could be done and it did it quite well. I actually think that Shift 2 is quite underrated, in some regards. If a game managed me to give me about 500 cars, as you said, with Forza 4's customization plus the upgradable interiors and actual race car modifications from Shift 2, that'd be incredible. Far better than having 1,000 cars you can barely do anything to, in comparison.

Quite agree, the 'works' customisation in S2U is excellent, and the livery scheme is something that I feel GT5 could do easily and in the absence of a full livery editor, would make a massive difference.

In RedSuinit's defense, there are a few filters within GT5's photo mode, which I am assuming was used in these shots.
 
i bought GT5 before FM4. i have to say GT5 slowly put the hook on and got me liking the game. i bought FM4 decided not to play it cuz i thought it might ruine GT5 play time but it didn't actually.
Physics are better on GT5 on less skate board feel than FM4, lap times are consistant even without TC off. Forza4 is a must to keep the aids on especially high hp cars, almost impossible to drive.
GT5 engine sounds are brutal but some stock engine sounds are decent so i skip the exhaust upgrade and work on braking points and turn ins.
GT5 using the thumb pressure sensor button for throttle which i like so much better than the trigger throttle type.
I played FM4 small disappointment, sounds a bit better but not better than rfactor samples. Actually the engine sounds irritate me on after an hour or so i can't pin point it. I turn down the volume but it drives in my ears..ahh. I almost starting to like the muffled GT5 sounds that are decent doesn't drain you out. I Had both systems running on one tv just different hdmi channels.
I loaded same car mercedes SLS for both games with stock engines. I actually like the GT5 sound after 10mins because it didn't rip my ears i had to lower the volume. FM4 sounds need better compression.

FM4 Cars are nicer, they have the hottest cars in the game for sure. but GT5 has better tracks/time change/rain etc and thats huge difference.
 
Any car that needs TC to keep it on the track is likely to be a handful with it switched off IRL, too. That is what driving aids do, make powerful cars easier to drive quickly. In that regard, Forza's 'skateboard' feel is not wrong.

Skateboard feel? im not sure what that is. While it could be hard in higher powered cars, its no where near impossible. If your not heavy with your trigger fingers then its rather easy actually. Its odd what you said about the sounds, im the total opposite in fact. I hated playing gt5 for long periods because the lack of sounds. Are you running a headset? If you are, then i dont really have anything to back up as i only use my T.V's volume.

As for GT5 using the x button i think it was to accelerate, thats really odd that you like that(unless i misunderstood you) because it was really hard to get a balance, your either full speed or not there was no in between. And also for the sound, you can go in menu lower the sounds a bit if im not mistaken. I think you can even have the car sounds focus on something else like tires, rather then the engine.
 
I didn't notice the sound bit - nothing as important as sound needs compressing. Ever.
 
I think anyone who says that they actually prefer muted sounds of cars in a game and someone who who can't drive high powered virtual cars so blames they game, well for me at least I can discount their post completely.
 
Not sure how high hp cars being hard to drive makes the game wrong.
Unless you're disappointed that FM4 doesn't have the grippiest tyres of all time, ala racing softs
 
I was surprised how easy Forza 4 R1 class is? After F3, which could be a handful.
Maybe my skills have just improved over time, or it is just easier I don't know.
