I think they're doing that because they don't want to get down on one knee to take the shot. I get into odd stances as well when I'm shooting in a muddy area but don't want to get my pants dirty by kneeling on the ground

Edit: This reminds me of an intro to an award show(tv) I saw, few years back. This car is driving all over the parking lot(I think). It's doing crazy maneuvers, until it finally clips something and rolls over. This cop rushes over to the upside down car, "hey, are you alright?".
