NEWS:

Gears Of War has now become the most played game on Live!.

Looks like Xbox is going to be having an inter-console war now between 2 exclusive titles. That's gotta be a first.

Wow, I'm seriously bad playing online against other people. It's so much harder than just the plain, predictable AI of the single player! The only time I stand a chance is when I am one-on-one with someone or we all stick together. Teams seem to win more when they all stick together and cause mayhem. :D

This game is very good, so atmoshperic. The controls feel so different to what I'm used to to but the controls start flowing soon enough. Man, it shows how long it's been since I've played a shooter since I'm making such slow progress on Casual. I need more practice.....

Just a head's up - I finished it on Insane on my own in the end. It was pretty easy after you've had some practice and know what to do.

I have 14/30 COG Tags. Who knows where the rest are. They aren't obviously easy to find...

I had at least 5 towards the end of Act 1.

They can be found near a red skull symbol you may see painted on a door, wall, floor etc. Some of them I couldn't find at all when they appeared...

I havent even played it on single player yet. Its online all the way for me. Im not too bad at it. Graphics are amazing even on my oldschool TV.

I havent played in about a week but I have 28/30 cog tags and I have been through the entire game 4 times. The biggest hint I can give you is to look for the red GOW paintings that show up once in a while. Whenever you see those symbols that means there is a COG tag somewhere near.

There is only 1 other game that can give GOW a run for its money. Thats Rainbow six Vegas. Heather and I beat the co-op story mode yesterday and dang it is extremely fun. We also started the terriorist hunt and thats also fun. The T-hunt is a lot like Ghost recon 2 where you had to kill all the terrorists on the entire map. However in RSV you cant die at all so it makes it real fun. And you can have 4 player co-op.
So with that said I see Rainbow Six Vegas as the only game that could even come close to GOTY compared to GOW.

I agree, unfortunately it will get GOTY for it's visuals and gore, and not for it's gameplay. Sure, lot of people rave about it, but that's because, again, it's fun to PLAY because of how it LOOKS. I really wish it would have done more to innovate the genre, especially with it's multiplayer, which for me, has already grown tired.

But honestly, I don't see anything coming out that is even close to giving it a run for it's money. This year, or possibly next.

YSSMAN - Gears is not at the tail end of 'first gen' titles. It IS a second generation title. If you want to say the 5 days till the 360's second anniversery make it a "first gen" title, so be it, but it's very much second generation.

Games I can see upsetting GoW:

- F.E.A.R
- Battlefield 2
- Half-Life 2: Episode One
- Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter

...None of those, IMO, could even touch GoW in most circumstances...

You're probably right, seeing as F.E.A.R. is not an especially good game anyway. Also, console versions of the battlefield games suck, Ghost Recon isn't that great either IMO, and Half-life 2: Episode one is basically the same as Half-life 2, which is 2 years old.

Its fun to PLAY because its bloody brilliant. I dont like games cause of graphics, I play games for GAMEPLAY. Gears of War is simply amazing from EVERY aspect. Dont ever judge a game if you've only played it for a few days, or even never played it. NEVER I SAY. Not refering to anyone BTW

^ I would agree here for the most part. On the whole, this year has been without "major" titles for most of the consoles. I think GoW stands its best chance based on graphics and gameplay, be it innovative or not. There simply aren't that many games that look that good and play that well, especially being on the tail-end of the "first-generation" 360 titles.

FEAR is good, but its whole story is something that falls behind killing aliens in popularity.

BF2 is old. Why would you even compare to GOW? Plus they do strive more on realistic terms.

Episode One was more of a short term game, and just a gimmick for Steam to make money. You got play as Alex, and find out what happened....big deal. I could find that on a HL2 forum.

GRAW is also "old". Let's what til' the 2nd comes out.

BF2142 however, might. It may be EA, however, there's no denying the fact that it is growing. A futuristic war time game isn't exactly done in this fashion. Dice knows what they're doing on this one.

I agree. GOW is much much more than just a good looking game. This is one of the only games I know of that allows your friends to "drop in and drop out" any time they want in the co-op mode. One of the best inventions ever and that is the reason it will win GOTY. Yes the graphics definetly help but this is simply a great game from beginning to end. The multipler doesnt have much to choose from but the co-op is one of the best experiences I have ever had.
Those that have not played this game as a co-op should not reply with an opinion at all.

Um...Kill.Switch was basically everything Gears of War is, the difference boils down to graphics, for the most part. Aside from that, Gears controlls a bit smoother, but it doesn't go much farther past that. I know you all are "saying" you don't like games because they're pretty, but I know deep down inside that each and every one of you thinks Gears is awesome because of the headshots, and chopping people in half (or even the curb stomp). It boils down to the graphics when these things happen, otherwise, it's the same old game with a new polish, just like pretty much anything else that's been released in the last two years.

Except Kill.Switch was essentially a mediocre game with a special feature. GoW, as much as I hate to say it (and in my opinion, F.E.A.R. is still better, but it won't matter anyways), is a damned flawlessly (well, okay, that is a little far) good game, and probably the best game released since Half Life 2.

That's not laced with hypocrisy or nothing.

If I may clarify, these are the console versions of some of the older games that have become available on XBOX or 360. I'm wondering now if I meant to say Battlefield 2142, not Battlefield 2... I don't recall for sure. 2142 has had its fair share of "so-so" press, so I really wouldn't call it a "headline" contender in any way, added to that, it isn't even on 360 (yet).

GRAW and RS: Vegas are indeed strong competitors, particularly Vegas. I haven't played a RS title in years because they just weren't what I wanted to play, but this time around I may actually spend some money on it. Maybe.

As for Half-Life, who knows. Isn't there another Half-Life 2 sequel out there as well? I haven't been paying much attention really, as I've been busy, but there was a lot of hype going into all of them.

---

To be honest, there isn't much out there to compete. On the 360 alone, there isn't a whole lot to out-class it in its genre, much less others as well. Test Drive Unlimited could be in the running for best 360 title, but it won't get it. There just haven't been many titles with the level of polish and "fun" as there has been with GoW. Next year, it will be a VERY hard year to pick though. When you have Bioshock going up against Halo 3, it is going to be a battle-royale for the top-spot, no questions there.

...If we want to go multi-platform for a second, again there isn't a ton of competition. Maybe...

- Dead Rising: Maybe GoW's best competition on the 360?
- Resistance: A long shot really, as sure it is a great game, but nothing too far beyond what we have already seen (if we follow Rici's rules...)
- Rayman Raving Rabbits: Innovative controls, fun games, good humor... Still a long shot though
- Zelda: Twilight Princess: Yeah, its a Zelda game alright
- Okami: Long-awaited, great game, but didn't get the recognition that it deserved. Too bad, awesome game.
- Guitar Hero II: I don't think I have to explain that one...

---

Thats about all I can think of...

why ?

pretty much everything I`ve played in the last year I`ve seen at some point in time. including all the PS3 games.

Battlefield 2142 is terrible. It's even more unbalanced, buggy and laggy than BF2, if that was possible, even though it uses the same engine. It's frowned upon by a lot of Battlefield followers who have pretty much had as much as they can take from EA. BF1942 was a measured success and it was not decent and stable until more than a year later after numerous patches. On the other hand BF:V and BF2 have infuriated and angered a lot of BF fans. BF2142 has also Adware. Battlefield games also rely on free content released along the life span of the game. BF:V had less than BF1942. BF2 employed dirty and unfair tactics to push people into buying the BF:SF pack in order to compete against other players who already owned it due to highly advanced weapon unlocks, like the SCAR. BF2 also only offered only one free map and nothing else, in it's whole life span. Support for BF2 add-on packs Armured Fury and European Assault ended as soon as it began. EA has also now built a history of cutting server support for their games 2 years after release, even though in BF2's case it took 2 years to get the game to play properly. There is an underground boycott of BF2142 and everyone who's in the know is staying well clear of EA's latest abomination. The free modifications for BF2 like POE, EOD, DCON, OPK, RC, FH and the rest look, run and play far better than BF2 and BF2142.

Personally I love BF2142, an excellent game when you get the unlocks especially. Infantry combat is far better than BF2, and also if it's that bad then why are so many people playing it? I respect your opinion though.

There are/were more than 1.5 million BF2 (+add-on packs and mods) players and there are/were more than 2.5 million BF1942 (+ add-on packs and mods) players. I don't know how many players played BF:V.

There are under 90 thousand BF2142 players in more than 2 months and sales are only growing weaker since release date. If it reaches 500 thousand players at it's peak (highly doubtful) it will still show a steady and serious decline in popularity of the BF franchise.

No matter, pretty soon EA will release BF clones yearly with little changes at full price and pull the plug on the support as soon as the new version is released. Modding community will be all but dead, except for the remaining BF2 community which it's pretty clear will jump ship to another engine once BF2 is dead. Best bit will be the constant bombardment of in-game advertising and emails from the publisher and god knows who else trying to sell stuff. Oh and not forgetting the dodgy patches and frequent unexplained glitches, errors and crashes with the game.

Yeah I really hate EA. I think a lot of people didn't buy the game because they knew it would be really buggy like BF2, but so far it is fine and they have released patches to correct any issues which is good. Also the game is a lot more fun if you play with a clan....because you actually get to use some teamwork lol.

Traditionally, I'd say FPS belongs on a PC but this damn game GoW I don't give a **** that it's on a 360 or that it's on a console... I WANT TO PLAY IT! It would be the ONLY reason I'd consider getting a 360 and for that the game developers suck ass because it would do so much better outside of the 360.

Only thing I can think of that sorta came close to GoW is F.E.A.R.

Am I the only person who really doesn't like GoW?

I played through it once, and that was it. I don't want to play it again.

R6V on the otherhand, I haven't even started single player on, but I've been playing it for nearly a week straight ;)

R6V gets my vote. A game doesn't have to look the best to be the best. And Co-op isn't my thing.

Well, your avatar says everything.

...After playing Rainbow Six: Vegas, I'd say that it probably has the best chance of beating GoW for game of the year...

I have also been playing RSV on and off for the last week with Heather and it really is a great game all around. The multiplayer online is much more fun than the GOW multiplayer and it has way more options. It is the only game that will give GOW some competition. Will it actually steal the spot light from GOW? No way. GOW will definetly get GOTY and RSV will be possibly be in 2nd or 3rd place.
The fun and excitement of the GOW drop in drop out co-op campaign is an untouchable experience. They truly did an excellent job with the campaign. Nothing else compares. Especially if you played through on insane. If you havent played through on insane then your opinion of GOW doesnt count because its a completely different game on insane.
