Sounds pretty good, but yeah you can free roam in a ton of lobbies with friends, so it's not a very big deal IMO tho.

I never said the freeroam would be the only mode. It would be an online-based community mode. Which would be available as a diversion from A-spec and B-spec :).

Yes there most probably will be trolls in a freeroam city, but thesedays there aren't many places on the internet without trolls are there? :(

Definitely not going to be in GT5, at least with those low-speed physics it won't. Unfortunately, doesn't sound too plausible to me for GT6, or any GT game for that matter, either, because it just doesn't seem to go with the forumla for making a GT game. That said, a free roam mode has been mentioned by Kaz before, and I would certainly love it's addition to the GT series. 👍

A freeroam could be worked in quite nicely, PD needs to get innovative, even the likes of EA are doing new stuff. What I'd like to see them create a freeroam but still keep the original GT format. PD need to have good innovation not horrible ideas like paint chips :grumpy:

With the Gran Turismo series; this would be a fairly good idea.

When I played NFS Undercover on my PS2, I loved the free roam mode. Just crusing through City districts, avoiding cops and what not.

Im guessing this is where the C-Spec idea comes from too.

The only downside to this is - How long would it take for PD to model a whole city?

I had a similar idea just yesterday.

PD modelled the garage/pits of all tracks. In the current online mode, if we enter the track, our car just sits in the pits. But, what if we could get out of our car and play as our avatar. We could walk around the pits/garage, chat with other drivers, and check out our competitors cars. And if we wanted to run practice laps, we would simple walk back to our cars and get in.

Also, this feature wouldn't be terrible hard to implement either since everything necessary for it has already been modeled (Including the our avatars ability to walk).

I think free roam is a great idea for GT, as GT claimed itself as "The real driving simulation".

But I think if PD focus on one city map (I expect it will be a part of Tokyo), then it will be more possible to be done, as GT6 still need many things to do...

Years ago a friend and I came up with the idea of a GT freeroam that used Google Maps to generate the roads. Of course you would need a high speed connection to stream in all that data.

Who wouldn't want to cannonball run from LA to NY, or even replicate your drive to work in a car you can't actually afford?

I dont see the point in freeroaming, maybe it's good for kids or those without the possibility of driving a real car. If I want freeroaming, I just take my car and go do a drive. I dont need that in a game really beside it would encourage people to drive even faster in real life cause if they can do it in a game they should be able to recreate it in real life.

Freeroaming couldnt give you a drive from la to NY, do you even realize the amount of data you would need to make something like that possible on an open road environnement ? Maybe you could have a part of a big city at best, like GTA4.

👍

I don't really see the point of having free roaming in the GT series either.

I know it would be a load of data, but that's what large HDDs and Broadband connections are for. The landscape could even be generic and procedurally generated. Almost like how some games progressively and seamlessly load other areas.

People who can't tell the difference between driving in a game and real life shouldn't be allowed to have a license. It's the same argument as GTA being called a murder simulator. Plus, with gas prices as high as they are, just going for a drive could lighten your wallet a bit.

Special stage , SS5,SS7,SS11,SSX all connected together, would be like tokyo extreme racer litterally, i would love that..

SS5 would connect to SS11 then you could take SS11 to SS7 then SS7 would connect to SSX

Since you already see route 7 signs in SS5 tunnel on the exit. also could open the streets because they are already modeled. just a thought, and woot 1800!

As nice as that would be, the area if it's going to be successful should include a variety of environments so that it can cater to a wider range of the Gran Tursimo audience; so maybe say a city with a beach, some hillsides and maybe an area for those who have the Range Stormer Concept, Pikes Peak Quattro, Mazda CX-7 concept etc...

What do you think? :)

In order to have "Online World Freeroam" you have to solve one small technical issue:

You have to make a engine that allows for real time asynchronous streaming of the complete "universe"

All Gran Turismo games - and other similar games in the simulation genre does not use that technique, instead they are loading complete tracks and cars into RAM and just stream the textures and data that player have in their FOV.

Going Free Roam would call for totally different approach to everything.

I do not say it is impossible or anything, but take into concern how open-world streaming always asks for great compromises in performance on closed-hardware (such as consoles) or even greater compromises on technical-fidelity of the assets involved from those that can achieved without "open world".

Just saying.

And then there's the issue of servers and network connections for mass numbers of users, which I don't even think the ps3 can capacitate for (limited to 16 players?)

But if it is done well it could become a very popular place for players to socialise, drive, take photos and whatnot :)

The PS4 was being rumored for a while so hopefully they work on the PS4 version of the game. You never know. Ill keep my fingers crossed.

Do you even look at the gas prices?

Costs a fortune to fill up these days!:guilty:

OK so basically if you haven't heard the concept yet, Gran Turismo World is an open city/ land where drivers can take their cars to cruise, meet and whatnot. This feature would be an online diversion to A-spec and B-spec.
Now I know this feature will not be incuded in GT5 because it will simply be too time consuming but what do you people here at GTPlanet think of an online freeroam in Gran Turismo?
Please can we avoid flaming within this topic, I just want to see what others think of a freeroam in Gran Turismo, there are no wrong answers :).

I don't like the idea at all.

Fuel prices

If GT6 is PS4 then I'd be a bit more hopeful, in the meantime if you support this idea please head to the feedback area.
Though I do like the online experience, I think a freeroam land would provide, for me a more enjoyable experience, especially considering there aren't any good games out there now which allow you to freeroam in a vast range of licensed vehicles. :(

I think Polyphony Digital should hire in some more landscaping artists and let it be a fantasy island with some beautiful places to photograph car... Oh, well, that would make it awesome to drive around in too. Let physics, graphics engine and cars come from Gran Turismo 5(LOT(!!!) of work saved), but let it be an huge expansion to Gran Turismo 5 and/ or 6.

As I might begin studying game design next semester, I've been playing with the thought of such a game, and as a huge fan of the GT series, having the physics and cars from Polyphony Digital would be a dream come true. Not sharing too much of the idea. :) I did like Test Drive Unlimited, but wow, it had some huge holes to fill.

Agreed. Same thing I thought of it should be a fantasy world. It'll be great. :D That's why I love imaginations. 👍

I just want them to make their usual Gran Turismo game first and then concentrate on working s freeroam in when the "normal" areas of the game are finished.

Because the world would be online we could have special areas like an OCD, special shops, auction house etc...

no, when you post a thread like this, flames are inevitable.
I only looked in here to see the flames. I'm a bit disappointed.
Try these.

Also, please disconnect your router and don't ever switch it on again. Thanks.

What about offline freeroam? Just in case if others don't have internet. :) If it's only freeroam online, others will have to stay in arcade mode if they have no internet connection. ;) Just like how in GT4 said, "You can't play GT Mode because you don't have a memory card."

I still wanted a GT Mode, but within that there would be an online freeroam, we still need to keep Gran Turismo, as it is; a Gran Turismo game :)

I think I need to update the OP :(

Oh okay. I thought you meant the whole game should be freeroam. Like driving to the event centers, the licence centers, to our homes and stuff like that. Hahaha.

Free Roam would be the best thing ever! Like some others have said, I would like for there to be different cities, but more like environments so that they connect to each other. Separating places by using a long road in an open plain might help lessen the problem that amar is talking about. I think if Kaz wants to make this for the next GT, he'll need to hire more people for the Free Roam environments specifically.

I think Free Roam is one of the features that they had to hold off on from implementing because of the limits of the PS3. I think they're doing it for the next GT and I'm guessing might be made for the PS4.

It's really annoying how a couple people ignored that. :dopey:
