I don't know if this has been discussed at length anywhere else here, but I'll post in here so that the "mob" can see it...
I've just been messing about with Prologue, and my experience has been
completely changed by turning ABS off. (Although, I'm really annoyed that I can't do it in time trial - I should be able to forgo the leaderboards and do what the hell I want.)
Anyway, turning ABS off unlocks a whole new dynamic to the game. I will admit that the threshold is badly communicated (lots of squeal and smoke at optimal braking point, wth? No steering feedback, only a bit of screen shake) and it is usually quite a long way up the pedal travel, making it difficult to modulate.
However, I've fitted a load-cell sensor-type thingy to my G25, to replace the old spring and pot' rubbish. I did this mainly for "proper" sims before I got Prologue, so I was worried it wouldn't work - but it does! 👍
The point is, because it's pressure based, not displacement, it's far easier to maintain very light braking forces (e.g. for scrubbing into the banks at Daytona, a Godsend in the Ford GT) and also for trail braking (which is very difficult without ABS) - and the maximum pressure is adjustable (I push as hard as I expect I'd ever need to at the start of a race to calibrate, and never have any problems thereafter.)
So yeah, I took the Viper GTS out first, sans ABS... Holy moly, it doesn't want to slow down in anything other than a straight line. Locks an inside wheel at the slightest provocation.
I decide to try something a bit lighter: an S1 Elise. Much better! You can really lean on the brakes, deep into the corner and it livens up the rear end immensely.
This is the biggest improvement. Gone is the sterility of the turn in and brake into the corner (where you'd usually just understeer off if you pushed too hard), instead you can keep turning in, but the rear end just doesn't follow, and you pirouette into the gravel / armco / solid granite cordon tape. Marvellous!
Then I tried the DC5. Superb fun, managed to beat an NSX around Suzuka - AI perhaps still needs work... The tuned Clio. It actually felt like a stripped-down road car, and the thing was sooo responsive on braking into corners, such that you could set up a perfect four-wheel drift on the brakes alone,
whilst already turning, brilliant around London where grip and speed are generally low, and you're relying a lot on the rhythm of the suspension. This was all with S3s. I tried the 512 with N3s, and traction under acceleration was more of a problem than braking grip. Eiger is also a whole new challenge, with the undulations really upsetting braking grip.
All in all, if they can find a way to make it more accessible to people without a load cell / wheel (can't imagine what it's like on a pad!

), I think more of the same in GT5 proper will be abso-flaming-lutely amazing!!!
