Please, don't mind this USELESS thread. GT5 IS useful with a controller. This thread is useless. Ignore it. And if you're an administrator or moderator for GTPlanet, please lock this thread. Thank you. :)

I have a ton of fun with GT5 and I only have a DS3. :odd:

...and I generally drive with all aids off too...

Turn on SRF, put on grippier tyres & it feels like any other GT game. If you're still having trouble after that, then turn on some other assists like traction control etc. The point of having those options is to make the game accessible to those who (for whatever reason) don't want to experience a hardcore sim.

I drive all the time on a pad. Some notes - it's easier to drift on a pad. Less physically tiring, and teaches you fine control as you have to be very sensitive in how you move the pad to change direction. I run all aids off except for ABS 1, often in longish races.

Also IRL you don't use controllers. So of course it's not going to feel like "the real thing".

Well, I actually said, even with aids, this game doesn't achieve its ultimate purpose if it doesn't feel like the real thing without a steering wheel. Plus, any GT game is more fun and probably easier-to-control with a steering wheel, anyway, it's just that GT5 seems useless without a steering wheel, especially when I myself don't have one.

With a steering wheel & all aids one it don't feel real anyway. I guess you should go buy a wheel & turn all aids off then. :D

Controls don't matter, the physics are the same so realism does not change when you change controllers. GT5 is more fun with a wheel and easier with a wheel, but that's about it.

A wheel won't remove the problems with GT5 physics. I don't think it's a hardcore sim, if it was it never would have been released with its original physics.

It's alright with a DS3 just wish I had enough to actually get a wheel

Well in real life you feel the acceleration and shadows aren't jagged.

I haven`t got a wheel cause i haven't got space in my bedroom.
Anyways i have funny with the DS3

Also, supposedly, according to some, playing GT5 with a steering wheel is easier and more fun than a controller, realism aside, anyway. :sly:

Well yeah that's obvious. You have better control and feel for what's happening. A pad, you have a tiny little stick.

Although that comment is a bit back handed and meant negatively, it should be more of an appraisal toward pd for making the game feel a lot better on the wheel. I've experienced both, wheel is better hands down but I wouldn't say the games useless on the pad.

Take into consideration of expenses. A dfgt is £90. Then a stand if you don't have a table to mount it on that is ideal.

I didn't see it worth my while buying a wheel at first because I was never in and spending all my money on my business. The factors are plentiful and you can't just blast the game and say its useless on pad. It caters to all depending on the circumstances of money. That's how you look at it.

Simples.

I fail to see how GT5 is intended to be any different from it's predecessors. It makes no attempt to be any more "hardcore" or "true to life" than any of the others. It's just an evolution of exactly the same thing they've been doing for 15 years, with notable improvements in some areas and not so much in others. It's a relatively realistic game which lets you collect and play around with a multitude of varied cars in a relaxed-sim style that finds a way to appeal to an incredibly broad user base, just like all the prior installments. There is no difference in tone or style from any of them.

And it is perfectly playable and enjoyable with a controller. Wheels have of course been the preferred way to get enjoyment out of the series since they first started making it compatible with them, but they are by no means required. Nothing has changed in that regard either.

You can buy me a wheel then 👍

This. I've used wheels before and they are very fun to use, but I just don't have the money to buy them. They are very expensive and I have priorities you know?

Yeah, when I said all aids off, I meant ABS off as well. I do it all the time with the DS3. Its fine ftmp. I have those little trigger attachment things on the shoulder buttons which I use for brake/accel so that helps a titch with brake modulation but I find GT5 is by far the best driving game (that makes any pretense to "realism") on the PS3 as far as controlling it with the dual shock. I absolutely HATE the codies games with their twitchy steering...

I have driven GT5 a few times with a wheel/pedals but I find the force feedback pretty crappy compared to something like Iracing.

How is it useless? I love playing GT5 for the fun, I don't really care for a wheel. Its like a added accessory for racing games ONLY. So the DS3 is all I need and I play GT5 daily and handle my cars fine without aids. Its all about what you put into the game. I still get the feeling I first got when I first played GT5.

Eh, how is playing any driving game with 2 sticks and a few buttons going to feel realistic?

Of course it feels better with a wheel.

This game still exist thank to those who played it with a dualshock in the old days, so stop this elitist attitude, the one and only useless thing in this thread.
What you're saying it's obvious, but we can have fun with it anyway...we can also start the "we can really call gt a simulator?" debate, you know, but that's useless too.

Personally, i can't play with a wheel for many reason, i'd like to, but i'm still having fun since day 1.
On a final note, your post is kinda troll-ish.

It's only a $60 game, cheaper now though, and despite what it says on the box it's not a real simulator and so no need to spend hundreds on a wheel. Just a DS3 controller is fine for what t it is. Do you think the F1 teams and manufacturers use GT5?

I will somewhat agree with the thread title because I've been using a DFGT for quite some time now and if I was to go back to using a DS3 then I would suck really badly. But when I was using a DS3 before switching to a wheel, GT5 wasn't so bad; I think using a wheel just makes it easier for you because it gives you the thought and perspective of driving a real car, and that's why I tend to make less mistakes with a wheel as opposed to driving with a DS3.

Pfff.... no they don't. They often use simulators that they develop themselves. Very rarely they would rely on a retail video game to get all their data from when testing in the real world isn't available.

You're still just goofing around. You aren't getting a proper experience without a wheel. It's like watching a movie with a blindfold or sunbathing in a rain coat.

They never rely on games in F1, except for the bottom backmarker teams.

It really is a whole new experience on the wheel.

As I've seen quoted before -

"The wheel is the game"

There's a reason why the tires models scale the way they do. You can choose to have the arcade experience with racing softs and aids if you like, or you can race on comfort tires with all the aids off, including ABS. You can get just as much a "hardcore" experience out of it as you can an arcade one with just a few pushes of a button. Since the game appeals to such a wide demographic, and everyone may not share the same interests, this a better approach. It would be idiotic to alienate the casual crowd as they're the ones that generate the majority of its sales. Oh, and add me to the list of those who find the game useless without a wheel.

The title of this thread I agree with.

It's just a game.

I play fifa ..don't feel the need to put on football boots!

.

lol, OK.

I'm not disagreeing with the notion that a wheel gives you a more "realistic" sense of driving a car. I'm disagreeing with the suggestion that GT5 isn't enjoyable without a wheel. I've spent many many years racing with FF wheels in PC sims like GPL and Iracing. GT5's FF isn't even as good as GPL's was almost 15 years ago. Its hardly an "uber simulator" of any sort - box blurb pretensions aside.

But yes, a wheel makes for a more convincing driving experience in GT5. The game is still really entertaining with a DS3. Its not like using a wheel suddenly turns it into a super simulator. Its still primarily and game more than a sim...

Not really. It's been in my machine since release day and I use a DS3.
I would love a wheel at some point - priorities I guess - but useless without one....hell no.
If anything, I've wanted to make the game harder hence all aids off, sports tires/comfort hards & stock suspension/tranny.👍

Totally agree

Playing GT5 with DS3 instead of a wheel with force feedback results in losing about 90% of fun from this game. But you don't know it yet if you use DS3. Buy a good wheel as soon as possible. I did it and I've not regret it so far, in fact, it was the best decision I made after buying PS3 with GT5.

Then I guess my enjoyment is 90% less with a DS3. How did you reach that figure of 90%?:)

Same for my case too. If just say my G27 broke and I wouldn't be able to get another.... I would not play GT5 anymore. I do everything on it. When my DFGT broke before i didn't play. I couldn't stand the DS3. Just being able to realistically turn my wheels all the way over when I want to and as far as I want to (which you can NOT do on the DS3)
